Chapter 43: Blooming Pansy — VI

Bidding each other farewell, especially after spending hours together, surrounded by nothing but the most beautiful scenery and the sweet fragrance of flowers, was a bittersweet affair.

As much as Li Xinyuan wanted to stay for a moment longer, he knew he couldn’t. However, him hanging around the Crown Prince before their marriage and without a chaperone was already pushing the boundaries of propriety.

And while Li Xinyuan liked the protagonist’s company, he knew the future that was set for him. Once married and inside the walls of this Forbidden City, rarely would he be able to leave the palace.

Like a golden bird in a gilded cage, he would be forced to stay perhaps until the day of his death. For a person like him, it was already very overwhelming to think about much less endure it.

Who knew, maybe once he became the Crown Prince’s spouse, he may even have to discontinue his medical practice.

That was already a huge blow for Li Xinyuan. A very big one. His entire last life had been centred around being a doctor, but now that upon marriage there was a possibility of him having to stop being a doctor and a surgeon entirely.

It was a difficult truth to accept. Li Xinyuan didn’t want to accept it. It made him sad when he thought about it. But then again, who was he to go against fate when he was already tempting the consciousness of the world by trying to change the storyline.

And the genre itself.

The more he would try to interfere, the faster the world’s consciousness would awaken and eventually take control of the situation; it could also try to eliminate the variable which was the reason behind the change.

The train of thought gave Li Xinyuan a massive headache as he looked in front of him, staring intently at the empty seat across from him.

A moment later, unable to overcome the urge to take one last look at the Crown Prince, Li Xinyuan leaned out of his carriage’s window and turned back to look at him. frёeweɓηovel.coɱ

As the distance between them grew, the tall figure of the silver-haired man dwarfed, his image becoming distant as Li Xinyuan smiled at him, wind throwing his long wavy locks in disarray as he leaned out more, wanting to see the youth until he could not longer catch the sight of him.

Noticing him looking back, a small smile adorned Liu Mingyun’s handsome visage as under Li Xinyuan’s watchful gaze, he slowly raised his hand and waved, the gesture as graceful as ever, if a bit slight.

Squinting his eyes, Li Xinyuan smiled at him once more and slowly returned his wave before pulling himself back inside the carriage, heart thumping against his ribcage in an erratically wild rhythm.

Now, he had to go back to the Divine Phoenix Hospital. His auntie and Hu Lijing were probably waiting for his return, who knew how truly anxious they might be feeling at this point?

The surgeon wanted to reach home quickly and show off his new weapon.

With one last glance at his halberd, Sui Yue, Li Xinyuan’s lips quivered into a lopsided smile as he leaned back on the seat, back straight, legs folded in the lotus position and hands making a familiar sign, the surgeon began to cultivate with his eyes closed.

...

Li Xinyuan laid on his bed, long hair sprawled on the hard mattress as he frowned at the floating panel of the system, if it could even be called one.

Two months had passed since his visit to the Forbidden City and his farewell to the Crown Prince. They didn’t see each other anymore.

Not like they saw each other often anyways.

But on the day he’d spent time with Liu Mingyun, the points given by the system had increased at a frightening speed.

[Current Points: 19690]

With a contemplative frown marring his ethereal face, Li Xinyuan reached his hands up, long slender fingers jabbed at the panel in a lame attempt to figure out the exact purpose of these points.

Aside from the so-called critical situation, were these points of no use? He couldn’t help but wonder, plush lips pursing together into a thin line canted his head to the side.

Unbeknownst to him, the sight he made was adorable, this confusion and contemplation apparent on his otherwise largely stoic features.

After some time of poking around, trying and failing to figure the system out, Li Xinyuan gave up, heaving a sigh as he dropped his hand on his stomach and pulled the silken duvet up to his chest.

It was early morning, the sun had yet to rise, the world outside and inside of his room was drenched in darkness as the cloudless sky displayed the crescent moon hanging on its vast expanse.

Usually, Li Xinyuan would be up by now. But yesterday, due to an emergency surgeon, the youth had to stay up till the early morning and work himself to the bone.

That was why he was given the right to sleep in today.

Not that he slept peacefully or anything. Despite having the habit due to his profession of both the lives, Li Xinyuan couldn’t help but sleep quite fitfully.

Turning to the side, the surgeon tucked one hand under his pillow and the other curled on his chest, grasping the duvet as he closed his eyes.

After a while, the surgeon’s distracted thoughts drifted towards a certain protagonist, making him wonder what Liu Mingyun was up to.

Was he asleep? Or was he trying to fall asleep?

Pft. Who was he kidding? Liu Mingyun was the Crown Prince, he was probably busy with political things and if not that, he was probably training.

He definitely wasn’t the type to slack off.

Unlike a certain reborn surgeon.

Startled, Li Xinyuan blinked, shifting on his back as he stared at the ceiling. Why the fuck was he attacking himself so early in the morning?

With a sigh, the surgeon rubbed a tried and on his face and started sitting up, dragging himself to lean on the headboard, the surgeon tapped the back of his head against it.

Handsome face tilted up ever so slightly, porcelain complexion a stark contrast to his flushed pink lips, chiselled jaw jutted outwards and adam’s apple rolling as he swallowed, Li Xinyuan let out a soft heave, long thick lashes fluttering as he blinked, lips pursing together as he gathered his thoughts.

Thuk. Thuk. Tap. Tap. Tap.

The cultivator’s keen ears twitched, instinctively he spread out his Qi to detect the source of the sound as his shoulders tensed and hackles rose.

His long fingers curled on his lap, grabbing a handful of the duvet as he narrowed his eyes, focusing intensely on the noise.

His Qi then collided with the Qi of the unknown person. Cool Qi, reminiscent of the full moon’s light, clashed against fiery and volatile Qi akin to a blazing fire.

Immediately, Li Xinyuan relaxed and let out a sigh. It was just Hu Lijing.

With a nod, Li Xinyuan slid back under the sheets, wiggling to find a comfortable position as he let out a sigh of content and closed his eyes.

Wait— wait, hold up, something was wrong—

Li Xinyuan’s eyes snapped open, his black pupils shrank as he bolted to sit upright, head snapping towards the door.

Where was Hu Lijing going this early in the morning?
