Chapter 45: Chapter FORTY FIVE

- KILLIAN -

"Lizzie, please take charge, I need to head out for a bit." I say to her.

"Okay, sure. Are you alright? You seem tensed." Lizzie asks, keeping her eyes on me and the girls simultaneously.

"Yes, I am. I just need to deal with personal matters."

"Well, um, take care Killian."

Oh, I sure will. I plan to take care of myself very much after this.

And if I don’t, I will take care of someone else tonight. In the worst way possible.

*

I’m in my car, driving at full speed. I had a quick stop at home to get refreshed and changed clothes when I confirmed what Asami told me. People are watching me. It seems like S enjoys playing dirty and hasn’t learnt his lesson.

’Incoming call from брат.’ My Bluetooth car speaker announce.

[Translation: брат means brother.]

"Pick it." I said and Liam is on the line.

"Caught him yet?" I ask, without greeting to warm the conversation.

"Just one, but I got him to talk. It’s a solo operation. Apparently they’re not from who we think it is." Liam’s voice rings in my ears and that makes me furious.

"Who sent them?" I ask cooly, trying to keep my temper in. One thing about being in this business is I need to be level headed despite the situation. There are other ways to relieve oneself of anger. Aside from the typical punching bags, there are foolish humans who think they’re wise with their decisions to double cross my family. I have killed a lot of people before, so this won’t be new. Just this time, my anger and frustration of having to be cold to someone I like because of them would be evident in however I choose to torture whoever these people are.

"Marino Antonio." Liam said. My jaw clenched when I heard the name and my hands tightened on the steering.

"Are you sure?" I ask, furrowing my brows.

"Affirmative. Come soon. The history is deeper than you can imagine." Liam uttered with a sigh.

I know Antonio. I would never forget that name for anything in the world. When I was younger, I remember sneaking inside the meeting room of my parents as they did their business. I remember seeing the man. He was very vain yet an important ally to my parents. To think the old fool would come after the grown children of his deceased allies makes me annoyed. It also makes me wonder why.

"I’m on my way." I cursed under my breath. I wouldn’t have to be on my way if I didn’t need to be in that darn school to begin with. Although someone in that school makes my time worthwhile.

When this is over, I want to go back to her and give her a hug. I can’t explain why I spoke to her icily but I can at least apologise and hope she forgives me.

"And Killian," Liam’s tone is tranquil. "Be careful. You have five men on your tail. They’re assassins. Don’t go to anywhere desolate." The call ends. Assassins?

A chuckle slips out of my mouth. My old friends want to play. It’s typical for Antonio to play dirty but sending assassins on my tail? That’s the lowest of the low. I think he doesn’t know me after all.

More reason why I was being watched. To think he made me have the assumption these people were working for S.

I look at the front mirror and squint. I can see two cars driving closely behind me. It’s pretty obvious now what their mission is. I sigh, remembering Liam’s words not to go to a quiet spot. He knows I’ll choose to go solo and deal with assassins personally. Now I’m torn between actual doing what’s on my mind or listening to him.

I don’t want to hurt him, but even I know that if I take those assassins home, it’ll be trouble for the both of us and my men. I’ve worked with such people before. They use whatever ammunition they have to finish a job. I don’t think I want them near my brother.

I’m sorry brother, but I won’t be following your words today.

"Call Asami." I say aloud.

"Calling Asami." Blares out in my car and I hear the line ring.

Asami picked up. "Yeah?" She asks. For the first time, her voice isn’t sultry but afraid?

"I’m about to face our old friends. Not technically but you know what I mean." Silence brewed between us and I heard her breathe ferociously. I’m guessing her nose is close to her speakers.

"I guess the past always haunts us." Asami finally spoke, lowering her tone.

My fists clench on the steering then I take a deep breath and ease my grip. "It always does." I exhale.

"Killian-" Asami calls.

"Yeah?" I respond with a raised brow.

"Don’t do anything stupid."

This makes the grin on my face widen. "Define stupid."

"Don’t be ridiculous! You know what I mean." She scolds. For a second, I nearly laughed.

"I won’t. Trust me." I said under my breath. "For my enemy, you do seem to care."

"I have always cared. Occupation is just a necessity to survive." Asami sighs. She doesn’t sound sad but I can hear the worry in her tone.

I still won’t forgive her. I never will, but I am grateful for what she did for me today. I would never understand why she alerted me but she deserves the appreciation. "Thank you for letting me know."

"It’s my pleasure, Killian." She was silent. I didn’t say anything either, keeping my eyes on the road. I took another detour, taking my hand off the steering to take out my gun from the strap around my waist. I have bullets in hidden places everywhere in my car. I avert my gaze to the side mirror. They’re still following me. Exactly what I want.

I just hope I’m not walking right into the enemy’s trap unintentionally. "But don’t get used to it. It’s not an occurrent thing." Asami giggles and I cackle in return.

"Noted." I say with a half smile. I run my eyes around the environment, keeping my eyes on the cars behind me, driving in an unsupervised government area which leads to the inside of a large underground road tunnel. This land is deserted and there are no cctvs, meaning there’ll be no such thing as evidence of the crime I’m about to commit. Hopefully, it won’t be too messy. "See you on the other side." I said to her and hung up.

Two cars pulled up behind me, parking at a far corner.

I have a lot of pent up frustration I need to release and these people are the best pun for this purpose. Plus, I need to go back to Hazel and make things right. I hate that I was rude to her. I hate that I hurt her with my words. I took my seat belt off and took a deep breath, looking at the top of my car. I waited for the men in those cars to get out first.

There are five men. Just the number of people Liam said are on my tail. Just they most likely did not drive themselves so I estimate the count to seven, and only five men are moving towards me.

I hung the bandolier over my chest, hiding it in my suit jacket and cocked my gun. Although this environment is the best because it’s a hidden spot under a tunnel, it’s still very open. Cars could drive past and phone the cops once they notice something suspicious.

Which is why I need to make this encounter short and swift. I set a timer on my watch and look at the side mirror.

They’re just a few steps away from my car. I crack my neck and put on my black, leather gloves laced with razors and poison. This should be fun.
