Chapter 181: Chapter 181 Deliberate Revelation

“Heyu?”

Lu Yunlan called out to her in surprise. Since she wasn’t familiar with Pei Yansi, it was natural she didn’t know how to talk to him, and even more clueless as to why he would appear here.

She asked Shen Heyu with a questioning tone.

Shen Heyu, hearing the astonishment and inquiry in her voice, felt a little embarrassed and could only respond, “President Pei said he came to see President Lu.”

“Come on in.”

Of course, Lu Yunlan wasn’t in a position to send anyone away.

She stepped aside to give them space, and Pei Yansi was the first to enter, followed by Shen Heyu.

As the two of them entered, Lu Yunlan closed the door behind them.

Shen Heyu walked over to the bedside.

Lu Yi was also present, and upon seeing her arrive, he pulled a chair over for her to sit.

Shen Heyu sat down and then started examining Mr. Lu on the hospital bed.

He was hooked up to various tubes, looking even more severe than the last time she saw him. His complexion was pale and bloodless.

“How is uncle’s condition now?” she inquired.

Lu Yi explained, “He’s been stabilized for now, and the hospital is preparing for surgery.”

Lu Yunlan interjected, “The surgery should have been done the day before yesterday, but the heart donor…” She didn’t finish her sentence, but her resentful gaze turned towards Pei Yansi, not so far away.

The latter met her dissatisfied look with a composed expression, seeming not to think there was an issue on his part.

He lowered his eyes and glanced at Mr. Lu on the bed.

Lu Yi certainly knew that getting the heart donor back must have involved Shen Heyu making sacrifices in front of Pei Yansi, but he didn’t know what she had done.

He felt a pang of heartache for her but was powerless to help, only able to watch her with eyes filled with pity.

Pei Yansi cleared his throat twice, his thin lips slightly curved in an ambiguous statement, “What are you looking at?”

His words pulled Lu Yi back to the moment. He looked up at him and saw him apparently nonchalantly pulling something out from his person.

It was two red booklets.

In front of Lu Yi, Pei Yansi ‘accidentally’ let the booklets slip from his hand, and as they fell to the floor, they flipped open to clearly reveal the contents inside.

Startlingly, it was his marriage photo with Shen Heyu.

The red of the marriage certificate was glaring. Lu Yi felt a sharp pain in his heart as he could likely guess that this was the price Shen Heyu had paid to Pei Yansi to procure the heart donor for him.

He, feeling guilt-ridden and saddened, involuntarily lowered his head.

Lu Yunlan reacted with even more surprise upon seeing this. She looked at Shen Heyu with astonishment but quickly understood what was happening and likewise guiltily averted her gaze.

Lu Yi felt staying here was far too oppressive. He stood up and said, “I’m going to check on the progress of the surgery arrangements.”

He opened the door and left.

Pei Yansi gave him a meaningful glance, bent down to pick up his marriage certificate with Shen Heyu, and organized it properly, addressing her, “I’ll step out for a bit. Wait for me in the car. Head home early after you’re done.”

His tone was gentle, his words laden with ambiguity, causing Shen Heyu to involuntarily frown upon hearing them.

He followed Lu Yi’s steps, leaving the hospital room.

After stepping out, Pei Yansi didn’t head to his car but instead closely followed behind Lu Yi.

Lu Yi heard his footsteps and obviously knew he was being sought out, so he didn’t check the progress in the operating room and went straight to his own office.

Pei Yansi followed behind.

The office was not very spacious, cluttered with files, and messily arranged, not fitting the image Lu Yi once presented to the outside world.

It was evident he had been truly overwhelmed these past few days.

Pei Yansi, uninvited, sat down on the black sofa that had always been there. Lu Yi saw him and scornfully chuckled. The last time he brought Bai Sheng’er to this place, they had sat here too.

But back then, his relationship with Shen Heyu was quite stiff, nowhere near what it was now—he had even developed such obstinate thoughts about her.

Pei Yansi heard his cold laugh but didn’t get angry, simply stating, “You should have seen the marriage certificate. Shen Heyu can’t possibly have anything to do with you. You can give up any thoughts you have of her.”

Lu Yi clenched his fists tightly. With Shen Heyu not here, he didn’t need to pretend, directly showing his most furious side as he glared at Pei Yansi, “Do you really think that she will always be yours? This kind of tactic will only push her further away.”

“That’s not for you to worry about. Besides, it doesn’t matter what her attitude towards me is; I just need her by my side.”

Pei Yansi never minded. Having experienced so much, he understood that all the affection in the world couldn’t compare to having her truly by his side.

Even if it meant accepting an unfavorable outcome, he would do so.

Lu Yi’s brows furrowed tightly, wanting to say something more, but Pei Yansi cut in first, “She was able to come to my side, thanks to you. Without that one phone call from you, I wouldn’t have gotten her so easily.”

“Most importantly, you knew very well what that phone call meant to her, yet you still made it.”

Pei Yansi paused there and then revealed a bloodthirsty smile, his eyes full of arrogant posturing, “Which means, you voluntarily gave her up. Now, what right do you have? You can’t even protect your own father and company, better not mention her anymore, right?”

Lu Yi didn’t speak.

He didn’t know how to refute what Pei Yansi had said. To some extent, he was right.

He simply didn’t have the ability to protect Shen Heyu.

Seeing his silence, Pei Yansi seemed to guess what was on his mind. Knowing that pushing too far could backfire, he brought the conversation to an end and left the office.

Before leaving, though, he dropped a final remark, “Furthermore, as long as you stay out of her way and don’t set your sights on her again, I have no interest in the Lu Family’s company; you can still manage it yourself.”

“But if I find out one more time, next time won’t be so simple.”

Lu Yi heard the sound of his door closing, like a warning; he slammed the door so loudly it echoed.

Lu Yi sat alone in his chair, feeling a wave of helplessness wash over him. Was this really the end for him and her?

In the hospital room.

After those two men had left, Lu Yunlan looked at her still comatose father on the bed and then at Shen Heyu, who remained seated beside the bed, unable to help but say, “Are you and Pei Yansi really…?”

“It’s true.” Shen Heyu sighed, “I didn’t have another choice.”

Lu Yunlan, of course, understood what she meant by not having another choice.

She couldn’t help but bow her head and say, “I’m sorry.”

Shen Heyu was taken aback, then struggled to produce a smile, “You don’t have to be, if I hadn’t angered him, uncle wouldn’t be in this condition.”

Lu Yunlan let out a deep sigh.

She said, “Just for this, no matter what happens to you in the future, I will help you with my life on the line!”
