Chapter 215 -215: The Base has Many Secrets
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng acted like children, referring to the elders as uncles and grandpas in the presence of their parents.
If they had been ordinary people, a simple polite gesture might have sufficed, but these two young people had brought so much energy and supplies to the base. Originally, the leaders wanted to forge a good relationship with them, but now that they had become the Base Chief’s children, they deserved even greater respect.
However, it also frustrated the others; Base Chief Lu had strong backing, and now he even had such capable son and daughter-in-law. What was there left for them to compete for?
Gu Pan quietly handed a bag of chocolates to Lu Ruisheng. Since smoking was prohibited in the hospital, distributing chocolates was a considerate gesture, especially since everyone else had brought something for Lu Jianguo.
Lu Ruisheng opened the bag and handed out chocolates without saying much—good stuff needs no introduction.
Even though these leaders had more resources than the average family, chocolate was still considered a treat. The sight of them pulling out a bag to share filled everyone with envy towards Lu Jianguo.
Lu Jianguo couldn’t stop smiling with pride, “These kids really know how to hustle. They gather so much supply every time they go out, even more capable than me.”
Those who received the chocolates flattered him, “The Base Chief is truly blessed to have such a good son. We’re all envious.”
The atmosphere reached a new level of warmth.
It continued until a doctor came in, asking everyone to quiet down and reminding them that the patient needed rest.
Everyone finally settled down and remembered that the son and daughter-in-law had come to bring food. They wished Lu Jianguo a speedy recovery and said their goodbyes.
After seeing the visitors out of the hospital ward, Lu Ruisheng returned.
Gu Pan didn’t go with him, instead cleaning up the room a bit as it was almost time to eat.
Lu Jianguo was in very high spirits. He watched Gu Pan move the coffee table and said, “No need to move it, Panpan. We can eat over there.”
Gu Pan looked at Lu Jianguo, realizing there was no need for him to stay in bed all the time. She agreed, “Okay, I’ll get the food.”
Then, Gu Pan washed her hands, wiped down the coffee table, and opened the lunch boxes.
Lu Jianguo marveled at the dishes Gu Pan laid out, “You’ve made such a feast?”
Gu Pan smiled, “There’s nothing we lack at home. Dad, just tell me whatever you want to eat from now on.”
Lu Jianguo had nothing more to add.
By then, Lu Ruisheng had returned. After washing his hands, the three of them sat around the coffee table to eat.
Lu Jianguo looked at them both, “It’s great that a family can eat together like this. The meal is wonderful, even better than a New Year’s feast.”
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng didn’t know how to respond to Lu Jianguo’s comment, so they just served him soup and dishes.
During the meal, they didn’t talk about much else, focusing mostly on base matters.
Of course, Lu Jianguo was curious to hear any thoughts Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng might have.
Gu Pan mentioned, “Lately, it’s been getting dark later and lighter earlier. I wonder if it’s some kind of disaster.”
Lu Jianguo nodded, “Our base’s meteorological team has also noticed this issue. However, polar days are not supposed to occur at our latitude, so it’s still unconfirmed.”
Lu Ruisheng added, “But it’s the apocalypse, what’s impossible now? Maybe the magnetic fields have changed?” He said this knowing that polar days were coming.
Lu Jianguo’s expression turned serious. He thought for a while before responding, “You’re right, it’s not impossible. Later, I need to head back to my department to prepare for the polar days. Even if it doesn’t happen, it’s better to be prepared than panicked.”
Lu Ruisheng looked at Lu Jianguo’s serious expression, “Dad, you’re still sick. Let me get Uncle Li over.”
Lu Jianguo thought for a moment, then nodded, “Okay, have Old Li come over.”

After discussing, he looked at them, “I have a plan in mind. Old Li is a good man; he’d make a fine leader here if we go back to the main base.”
He quickly added, “If you’re willing, that is.”
Hearing the mention of returning to the main base, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng weren’t opposed; they had also thought about checking it out.
So Gu Pan said, “We’ve thought about visiting the main base too.” Then she continued, “Dad, what if the magnetic fields become chaotic and extreme daylight and nighttime occur? Could glaciers melt, or might there be even stranger natural phenomena?”
It was these concerns that made Gu Pan think about acquiring a cruise ship, fearing unforeseen disasters that necessitated foolproof preparation. The world was now completely chaotic, no longer adhering to conventional thinking.
Lu Jianguo didn’t deny the possibility, “Anything’s possible, so the main base has updated its human seed bank project. I can’t disclose too much; it’s state confidential. I’ll tell you more when the time is right.”
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng had guessed some of this, along with what Chen Fengzhou had mentioned about national secrets and the human seed bank, rumored to preserve a select group of humans for future catastrophes.
Lu Ruisheng noted, “Well, Panpan and I have always been prepared for these disasters.”
Lu Jianguo reassured them, “Don’t worry, with me here, you’ll be alright.”
Gu Pan sensed the underlying message; Lu Jianguo had connections to a better place, seeming more capable than they had realized.
She hadn’t expected to encounter Lu Ruisheng’s relatives this way, nor that one of them would be the Base Chief. Sometimes, coincidences were just too perfect to be mere chance.
Originally, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng had planned to talk to the guards about changing their address due to moving, but they hadn’t found the time. They would need to make the trip after Lu Jianguo was discharged the next day.
After dinner, Lu Ruisheng fetched Li Shukang to discuss potential strategies for dealing with prolonged daylight or nighttime.
Of course, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng also offered some suggestions.
Li Shukang hadn’t expected Lu Jianguo to still acknowledge him as Lu Ruisheng’s cousin, joking that both families were now related, and he even gained a new cousin.
While surprising and somewhat amusing, their conversation was cheerful. In the apocalypse, reconstituted families were still families.
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng didn’t need to stay overnight as Lu Jianguo’s condition wasn’t serious. His hospitalization was more about being the Base Chief and needing rest, as he hardly ever took a break otherwise.
Given the circumstances, hanging around just might disrupt his rest.
And since Feng Zhekai had also come to visit, assuring them he would be on call if needed,
once Lu Jianguo settled in for the night, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng headed home.
