Chapter 74 - The devil's eye

The morning came not with light but with silence—the kind that presses against the ears and weighs heavily on the chest. A faint mist curled through the ruins of the old cathedral, where the boys had last seen their father vanish in a blaze of violet fire. The air was thick with anticipation, grief, and magic.
Cain was the first to rise, seated at the edge of the broken altar, running his fingers over the pendant Selene had given him. It pulsed softly, warm against his skin. He stared into the distance, unblinking, his eyes glowing faintly crimson, thoughts lost in the whirlwind of last night's revelations.
Leo stirred next, hair tousled and eyes heavy. He dragged himself from the cold floor, his coat still covered in ash and blood. He looked around and saw the silent bond between his older brother and the relic he held, sensing Cain was more distant than usual. Eren, the youngest, lay curled up with his arms folded under his head, dreaming—maybe of peace, maybe of the chaos to come.
Selene was missing.
It hit Cain the second he realized the necklace had dimmed. Panic surged in his chest, crashing like a tidal wave. He turned to Leo with urgency in his voice. "Where's Selene?"
Leo looked up, blinking. "She was next to me... I thought she was still asleep."
Eren snapped awake at Cain's tone. "What's going on?"
"She's gone," Cain said, voice hardening. "I can't feel her."
They moved fast, sweeping through the ruins, calling her name, checking trails. That's when they found the blood. A few fresh drops, trailing toward the forest. And an unfamiliar symbol burned into the earth in blackened stone—a sigil none of them recognized.
"She was taken," Eren said, voice sharp. His powers flared on instinct, shadows gathering under his feet. "This was intentional. Someone waited until we were weak."
"But who?" Leo growled. "Everyone who had a grudge against us is either dead or in hiding."
Cain's jaw tightened. He summoned fire to his palm—white-hot and flickering violently. The flames reflected in his eyes as his demon blood surged.
"Our father," he whispered.
Leo scoffed. "You think he took her? After saying he loves us?"
"Love is twisted in his world," Cain said. "And if he sees Selene as a threat to our loyalty..."
Eren's fists clenched. "We're not waiting. I'll tear the veil open myself if I have to."
"No," Cain said. "We move smart. Not desperate."
Just then, their mother stepped forward from the shadows. Her long, silver hair moved like water, and her eyes—deep, royal blue—were filled with fire. She looked stronger than ever.
"Boys," she said, her voice commanding, motherly, and cold all at once. "Your father is playing his final hand. And he knows your greatest weakness is not your power—it's your hearts."
Cain turned to her. "Then help us. We need to find Selene."
She nodded and raised her arms. The ground shifted, revealing an old chamber beneath the cathedral. Inside, runes glowed along the walls—portals to forgotten realms.
"These are ancient gates," she said. "One of them will lead to where she's held. But beware—the realms are not kind to halfbloods."
They stepped in together.
—
The first realm they entered was like nothing they'd seen. A labyrinth of glass towers and broken time. Every step reset part of the space, reflections echoing their worst fears. Cain saw Selene screaming behind a wall of mirrors. Eren saw himself killing their father. Leo saw himself alone.
But they pushed forward.
Leo used his control of lightning to disrupt the towers. Eren bent shadows into anchors to keep them grounded. Cain used his flames to melt paths forward.
After what felt like hours, they stumbled through a shimmering gate and landed in a wasteland filled with smoke and bones.
There, on a dark throne made of twisted iron and roots, sat their father.
And beside him, barely conscious, was Selene—her body wrapped in glowing chains, her energy visibly leaking from her.
Cain's rage ignited.
"Let her go!" he bellowed, and the ground cracked beneath him.
Their father stood slowly, eyes glowing with ancient magic. "You chose her over blood, Cain. Over your true purpose."
"I chose love," Cain spat. "And I'll do it again."
Eren and Leo flanked him, powers ready. Their mother stepped out from behind them, confronting the man she once loved.
"You never wanted a family," she hissed. "You wanted weapons. But we are not yours to command."
Their father smiled sadly. "Then fight me. All of you. If you win... she lives."
Cain turned to his brothers, then to his mother. They nodded.
And with a roar, the final battle began.
