Sons of a devil-Chapter 90: Cracks in the light
Chapter 90 - Cracks in the light
The morning after the battle was unsettlingly quiet.
Mist coiled around the forest outside the safe house, and dew clung to the window panes like tears. The siblings were gathered in the kitchen, where the usual chaos had melted into wary silence.
Selene sat curled up on the couch, her skin still pale, golden veins faintly glowing beneath. Cain hadn't left her side since the night before. He perched on the floor beside her, one hand loosely held in hers, his eyes never drifting far.
Across the room, Eren paced restlessly. "This silence feels wrong."
"It is," Leo said, leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed. "The air's too still. Like we're being watched."
They were right.
Because Eira was gone.
Vanished in the night without a word. Her bed untouched. Her boots missing.
"She's not just out getting fresh air," Eren muttered, jaw clenched. "Not with that storm in her eyes yesterday."
"She saw Selene's power," Leo said quietly. "You saw how she looked—like it wasn't awe, it was envy."
Cain's voice was sharp. "Don't. She's our sister."
"She was," Eren snapped. "But now I'm not so sure."
Selene flinched slightly at the tension, and Cain quickly placed a hand on her back.
"She wouldn't turn on us," he said, almost to convince himself.
But in the woods, miles away, Eira stood among the ash-trees of the Black Hollow, her hands clasped behind her back. Her eyes, once warm and storm-gray, now glowed a faint purple. Controlled. Focused.
The devil stood in front of her—tall, regal, handsome in the most terrible way. His presence demanded loyalty, not love.
"She's stronger than we expected," he said, watching a flicker of Selene's magic in the palm of his hand. "But she's not untouchable."
Eira's voice was soft. "You promised me they'd be safe if I obeyed."
"And they are, aren't they?" he smiled. "As long as they don't stand in our way."
Her jaw tightened. "Just don't hurt Cain."
The devil chuckled. "You still care for him. Even after how he looked at her, like you were invisible."
Eira said nothing. But her fists clenched behind her.
Back at the house, Neriah had gathered her sons and Selene.
"There's no more hiding," she said. "Your powers are no longer dormant. Selene's light is unstable. Eira is missing. And he is getting closer."
Leo nodded grimly. "What do we do?"
"We fight. We go to the obsidian gate," Neriah said. "That's where he'll be waiting."
"Why would we walk into a trap?" Eren asked.
"Because," she said, locking eyes with them, "he wants Selene. And he wants you three as weapons. We end it on our terms."
Cain stood slowly. "We need Eira back."
"We might not have that luxury anymore," Neriah said.
Selene spoke up, her voice weak but steady. "We will. She's still in there. I know she is."
Cain squeezed her hand. "Then we find her."
---
Later that night, under a violet sky, Cain walked with Selene through the woods behind the house. The stars were dim, and every rustle made them tense.
Selene leaned against him. "You think she hates me?"
"No," Cain whispered. "She loves us. She just got lost."
"I want her back," Selene said. "Even if she doesn't trust me... I want her back."
Cain stopped, facing her. "I'll bring her back. I swear it."
Selene looked up at him, tears shining. "And if she tries to kill me?"
He kissed her softly, holding her face in both hands.
"Then I'll remind her what family means."
From the trees beyond, a faint whisper moved through the branches like a warning.
Eira was watching.
And her heart ached with the truth of it all.
Eira's breath hitched as she stood cloaked in shadows, her eyes locked on Cain and Selene. Their silhouettes moved slowly through the woods, close, safe, unaware of the weight of her gaze. She should've felt anger. Betrayal. Even power. But all she felt was... emptiness.
And grief.
She'd died for them once.
And now, reborn under the Devil's grip, she was meant to destroy them.
Her fingers twitched, the purple light under her skin pulsing as though it had a will of its own.
"I gave everything," she whispered bitterly. "And still... I wasn't enough."
Behind her, a voice slithered through the trees. Cold. Mocking.
"You were never meant to be a background character, Eira. You were born to outshine them."
Eira clenched her jaw. "You said I wouldn't have to hurt them."
"I said you wouldn't have to feel it," the Devil answered smoothly, stepping forward. "A gift, really. Mercy. I can take the pain away."
"I don't want to be a monster," she said quietly.
"Then don't," he said, circling her. "Be justice."
At the house, Neriah sat in the candlelit living room with Leo and Eren. A map of the Forgotten Realm lay spread on the table, marked with glowing sigils.
"She's close," Neriah said. "I can feel her pain. But something's binding her."
Eren cracked his knuckles. "If she's controlled, do we fight her?"
"No," Leo said immediately. "We bring her back. We owe her that much."
Eren stared down. "And if she doesn't want to come back?"
Neriah's voice was quiet. "Then we fight for her anyway."
Cain and Selene returned, and Cain's expression told them all they needed to know—he'd sensed her, too.
"She was watching us," he said. "She's torn."
Selene nodded. "We can still reach her. She hesitated. I saw it."
Leo glanced at their mother. "What do we do?"
"We go to the Mirror Tree," Neriah said. "It's where light and shadow cross. If anything can sever the bond between her and your father... it's there."

The brothers exchanged a look.
"We'll bring her home," Cain said.
That night, under the blood-hued moon, the siblings stood at the base of the Mirror Tree. It pulsed with ancient energy, bark veined with silver and obsidian.
Eira appeared slowly from the mist, eyes glowing, her walk controlled, graceful—deadly.
"You shouldn't have come," she said, her voice echoing unnaturally.
Selene stepped forward, palms open. "You're not him, Eira. You're you. Come home."
"I was home," she said, voice cracking. "But you took it. You took them. You took everything."
Cain stepped forward, carefully. "You're our sister. That never changed."
"No," she snapped, power flaring around her. "I died for you! And you forgot me."
"We never did," Leo whispered.
Eira raised her hand, the magic building—
—but her arm trembled.
Selene rushed forward and wrapped her arms around Eira just as the blast released, the energy dispersing around them in a halo of sparks.
Eira collapsed, sobbing.
"I don't want to hurt you," she whispered. "I just wanted to be enough."
Cain kneeled beside her, eyes filled with tears. "You are. You always were."
Behind them, a rumble echoed through the trees.
The Devil had arrived.
And he was furious.
