53: Chapter 52 Lucky Indeed

53 -52 Lucky Indeed

As he was leaving the hotel, looking at the silent Kate, Yang Yi truly felt reluctant and sad; he didn’t even know what to say to bid farewell.

But once he got on the plane, feelings of guilt and reluctance vanished.

Yang Yi only felt the excitement of facing new challenges, as well as anticipation for his future college life.

In order to avoid the surveillance of the Destroyer, Yang Yi had truly gone to great lengths this time, but if the Dark Night Knight couldn’t handle even this much, they would never have reached their current status.

The plane’s first-class cabin was even more delightful.

Only Danny came to see Yang Yi off.

The two of them sat side by side, and after the plane took off, a completely relaxed Yang Yi could not help but ask, “Old Zhang, can you tell me now which university it is?”

Old Zhang was Danny, and Danny was Old Zhang.

After leaving, Old Zhang became Danny’s codename for this mission, and Yang Yi, known for his good memory, certainly wouldn’t get it wrong.

Danny paid no attention to Yang Yi, donned his headphones, and said, “I don’t like to chat during a journey, and we have a long flight ahead, so, watch a movie or take a nap.”

Yang Yi, helpless and too excited to sleep, had no choice but to do as Danny suggested: start watching a movie and chat with the flight attendant to pass the time when there was nothing else to do.

The plane was headed for New York, but their ultimate destination this time was Los Angeles, which meant, after arriving in New York, they had to cross the United States again.

The United States has spy schools, with the public ones like the FBI National Academy, an institution specializing in training senior agents and spies, being out of the question.

Unable to go to a professional spy school, the only thing Yang Yi could think of was those militarized universities—not military academies, but those with majors related to national defense, intelligence, homeland security, etc.

Although some subjects and majors at these universities are highly confidential, they couldn’t possibly be as dangerous as Danny had described.

So, Yang Yi was genuinely at a loss as to where they were going.

Eventually, the only reasonable explanation he could come up with was that he was being sent to some privately operated secret training base or similar facility.

But such a secret training location seemed unlikely to host as many as three thousand trainees.

Was it a training camp operated by Blackwater Company?

But what did a spy need PMC skills for?

Yang Yi wanted to be a formidable spy, an outstanding agent—not to head into battle as some private security or soldier; that would make him cannon fodder.

So, Yang Yi really had no clue.

With hope mixed with restlessness and confusion, Yang Yi followed Danny for a brief stay in New York before boarding another plane to Los Angeles.

This time, Yang Yi was truly tired and slept until Danny woke him as the plane landed, and he arrived at the destination in a daze.

Still not adjusted to the time difference, Yang Yi felt somewhat stunned, and as he was following Danny out of the airport without even thinking to ask where they were going, Danny suddenly extended his hand, saying, “Give me your passport, your phone, hand over everything you have on you.”

Yang Yi didn’t bring clothes, he didn’t carry any luggage, and when he heard Danny’s request, he oddly handed over his documents and phone.

After tossing Yang Yi’s belongings into his bag, Danny suddenly let out a very strange laugh.

Yang Yi found Danny’s laughter very eerie and it gave him an ominous feeling.

Just as he was wondering if he had fallen for some sort of trick, he saw a tall, burly Caucasian briskly walking towards Danny.

“Hello, my friend, long time no see.”

Danny opened his arms and smiled toward the Caucasian approaching him, “Hello, Raymond, long time no see.”

After embracing each other, the Caucasian named Raymond said, “Everything’s ready.

We’re in luck; there was just the right opportunity to go straight in.

No need to wait for trial or sentencing, and there’s also some money to be made.”

Danny asked with interest, “Oh, that sounds too good to be true.

Tell me more.”

Raymond shrugged and said, “There’s this Asian guy.

He was driving under the influence and caused a crash that left two of a family of three seriously injured and one with minor injuries.

Then this guy fled the scene of the accident and broke into his ex-girlfriend’s house, firing six shots.

His ex-girlfriend was seriously injured and nearly died, and her face was completely ruined.

Oh, and this guy’s a rich second generation; his family’s extremely wealthy.

He settled with the victims out of court and pleaded guilty before the trial in exchange for a lighter sentence—five years in prison.”

Danny frowned and said, “Five years, huh? freewebnoveℓ.com

My plan was for three years.”

Raymond shrugged and said, “What’s the big difference between five and three years?

He can be paroled.”

Yang Yi was stunned and blurted out, “Wait, prison?

Five years?

What do you mean?”

Danny shrugged and chuckled, “Just like you heard.

Yep, the ‘college’ you’ll be attending is Pelican Bay Prison.

Originally, I wanted to get you into a crime that would have you locked up for two to three years, but now it seems that won’t be necessary.

You can skip being arrested and…”

Yang Yi exclaimed in panic, “Wait!

I don’t want to go to prison!

I don’t want to go to any prison at all!

Damn it, I wanted to go to school, not to prison!”

Danny looked innocently and said, “That’s why I didn’t want to tell you sooner.

See, you’re backing out as expected.

I just think that as long as you can really learn something, what’s the difference between going to prison and going to college?”

Yang Yi angrily said, “There’s a big difference!

Going to prison could turn my ‘chrysanthemum’ into a sunflower!

College doesn’t do that!”

Danny smiled faintly and said, “Actually, the difference isn’t that big.

In the United Kingdom, it’s just a matter of voluntary or involuntary, but the outcome is the same.”

Yang Yi was near breaking point and shouted, “I’m not British!”

Raymond looked confused and said, “What do you mean?

What does that mean?”

Danny shrugged and said, “It’s a very frightening joke.”

Raymond laughed awkwardly twice and then suddenly said, “Could you explain it to me?”

Yang Yi grabbed his own hair frantically and said, “Damn it!

Damn it!

I knew it was a trap!

Ah, damn!”

Danny said earnestly, “Urgency.

There’s the sense of urgency you need here.

But most importantly, this place has the teacher you need most!”

Raymond spread his hands and said, “A life without ever going to prison is incomplete, kiddo.

You’ll understand soon enough.”

Danny waved his hand and chuckled, “Ignore him, let’s continue.

What’s the deal with that Asian guy?”

“Oh, his dad is willing to pay a big sum of money to help his son avoid jail time.

But getting sentenced to five years was already the best outcome, so he’s willing to pay an additional $500,000 to keep his son out of prison.

Out of this $500,000, $300,000 is to grease the wheels with the California cops and prison, and the remaining $200,000 is to pay the scapegoat who will serve the sentence in place of his son.

If they were looking for a black guy, it would have been dirt cheap, but since he needs an Asian, I figure we can hike up the price—maybe to at least $300,000.”

Danny breathed a sigh of relief and chuckled, “Talk about good luck.”

Raymond nodded in agreement and said, “Yeah, talk about good luck!”

Only Yang Yi was on the side, teary-eyed, saying, “No, this isn’t good.

Not good at all!”
