Standing Next To You-Chapter 586: A genuis?
Chapter 586: A genuis?
Fei Chuan thought his jealousy and bitterness toward Xu Tian had already disappeared. After all, he was now Bei Sangyun’s love. Her one and only love.
But when he saw Xu Tian appear at his office door, Fei Chuan’s expression couldn’t help but turn sour again.
"You’re here early," Fei Chuan said coldly. "Do you know that showing up too early can make people around you feel burdened? Our call time is eight a.m., but you arrived thirty minutes ahead." He pointed at the digital clock hanging on the wall. "Because of you, I now feel like I have to come in even earlier."
Assistant Cheng, standing quietly behind Fei Chuan, gave his boss a strange look. Why was he getting angry at an employee just for being punctual? Besides, Fei Chuan always arrived ten minutes early himself.
Xu Tian was also stunned. He had intentionally come early, knowing Fei Chuan did not like him. He didn’t want to give him any reason to find fault or disappoint the superiors who recommended him. Yet somehow, arriving early still turned into a problem.
"I apologize. I’ll make sure to arrive exactly on time in the future," Xu Tian said calmly.
Fei Chuan didn’t reply. Instead, he instructed Assistant Cheng to show Xu Tian around and assigned him some tasks.
Assistant Cheng did as he was told.
Four hours later, Xu Tian returned the file to Assistant Cheng.
"Is something wrong?" Assistant Cheng asked.
"I’ve finished the files," Xu Tian said expressionlessly.
Assistant Cheng was taken aback. The work he had given was supposed to last a whole day — it didn’t even matter if Xu Tian didn’t finish it today.Curious, he opened the file and quickly grew even more surprised.
Neat handwriting filled the empty spaces at the back of each page. It was clear that Xu Tian hadn’t just skimmed through the files; he had thoroughly read and analyzed them. As Assistant Cheng scanned the notes and comments, the amazement on his face turned serious.
After flipping through all the pages, he set the file aside and said,"Good job. Take a break. I’ll call you later with your next task."
Xu Tian bowed politely and left.
Once he was gone, Assistant Cheng reopened the file, this time reading Xu Tian’s notes more carefully. As he went through the pages one by one, his amazement only grew.
He himself could have completed this task in about four hours — most experts could finish it in half the time it would take an average worker. But to be this precise, and even propose solutions for each problem found? That wasn’t something Assistant Cheng could have done so quickly. It would have taken him days to research solutions and prepare a proper execution plan.
Yet Xu Tian had done it in just four hours — read, identify the problems, and propose solutions.
Was he a computer with a massive database inside his head?
This was... almost inhuman.
The only person Assistant Cheng knew who could execute work like this was his boss.
And his boss was undoubtedly a genius.
Was Xu Tian... also a genius?
Assistant Cheng was intrigued. So for the next task, he gave Xu Tian double the workload.
Yet once again, Xu Tian finished the job on time — complete with thorough information and proposed solutions.
This time, Assistant Cheng was completely convinced. Not only had he doubled the workload, but Xu Tian still finished in the exact same time as before. Which meant — Xu Tian wasn’t even reaching his limits yet.
No wonder Ms. Bei had recommended him. She must have seen the man’s talent and potential. And working under his boss would only make Xu Tian even more formidable.
Assistant Cheng suddenly felt a surge of excitement. He had long realized his own limits, but being around people with seemingly limitless potential — like his boss and Xu Tian — reignited his passion. He was genuinely thrilled to watch Xu Tian grow and improve day by day.
Over the next two days, Assistant Cheng’s assignments for Xu Tian grew increasingly difficult and complicated — so much so that even Fei Chuan took notice.
"Why are you giving tasks to one person that would usually take a whole team?" Fei Chuan asked, frowning slightly.
Although he liked the idea of keeping Xu Tian buried in work, he was worried it might cross the line into bullying. Xu Tian might eventually feel overwhelmed, leave the position, and — worse — return to Bei Sangyun’s side and complain. If that happened, Fei Chuan could end up losing Bei Sangyun’s trust.
And that was something he absolutely couldn’t afford.
He did not like the man, but he would rather tolerate him than disappoint Bei Sangyun.
Assistant Cheng chuckled at Fei Chuan’s accusation. "Relax, boss. I’m not making things hard for him. Well, actually, I am. But I don’t have any bad intention. It’s all because I’m training him. You told me to look after him, so I did."
"You’re training him?" Fei Chuan looked at Assistant Cheng with doubt. He knew how much Assistant Cheng liked to slack off. He thought the latter would rather hand off some work to Xu Tian than personally train him.
"I am. Right now, I’m testing his potential. I’m trying to gauge his limits."
Fei Chuan glanced at Assistant Cheng, who was smiling like a fool. He looked exactly like Zhong Cheng when he was boasting about Xu Tian.
Fei Chuan frowned. "You like him."
"I might," Assistant Cheng said, laughing. "I like being around great people."
"Great....huh. Is he really that great?" Fei Chuan scoffed. First it was Zhong Cheng and Bei Sangyun, and now Assistant Cheng. What was it about that man that made people around him like him so much?
"He reminds me of you," Assistant Cheng replied. "A humble, unpolished version of you."
"Are you saying I’m arrogant?"
Assistant Cheng paused, realizing he had said too much. "You have the right to be arrogant, boss," he added quickly.
"It’s a bit of a stretch to compare him to me."
"Maybe. But boss, look at this." Unable to resist, Assistant Cheng grabbed the file Xu Tian had handed in earlier.
"This file was meant to be passed to our A-Team, with a one-week deadline. If you did it yourself, how long do you think it would take?"
Fei Chuan glanced at the file. He didn’t even bother opening it. Judging by the title on the first page, he already knew what it was about.
"Two days," he said.
Assistant Cheng nodded. "I thought so too. How about me? What if I did it alone?"
Fei Chuan glanced at him and answered without hesitation, "One month."
Assistant Cheng: "....."
The difference between two days and one month... it hurt a little.
"...I might manage three weeks and a few days," he muttered defensively.
"And that’s if you don’t sleep for a whole week," Fei Chuan added.
Assistant Cheng: "....."
"Alright, alright. Anyway, how many days do you think Xu Tian would need to finish it by himself?"
Fei Chuan thought for a moment. Based on Zhong Cheng, Bei Sangyun, and now even Assistant Cheng’s praise, the man must be really capable."Two weeks," Fei Chuan answered.
Assistant Cheng smiled triumphantly. "Wrong."
"Three weeks?"
"Nope. Much less than that."
Fei Chuan’s gaze sharpened. His warning glance told Assistant Cheng he wasn’t in the mood for games.
Seeing this, Assistant Cheng’s smug smile faded a little. He finally said, "Four days."
Fei Chuan paused. Four days...
"I’m not joking. It’s true. And the work isn’t just rushed — it’s very polished," Assistant Cheng said, opening the file and showing Fei Chuan Xu Tian’s notes."If you read this, you’ll understand why Ms. Bei wants you to train him."
Fei Chuan stayed silent.
Xu Tian wasn’t yet considered an expert who had been polished through years of experience. He had only just started at Phoenix Holdings. And yet, he had become this capable in just a year?
To finish that much work in four days... it seemed impossible. Not for Fei Chuan himself, who possessed god-tier hacking skills — but for an average person, it would be utterly impossible.Unless the other person had something they were using.
Fei Chuan told Assistant Cheng to leave him alone in the office.
Assistant Cheng withdrew quietly — but inside, he was delighted.
He could tell that his boss had been hostile toward Xu Tian. Even though he hadn’t bullied him, he had been avoiding him and dumping all the work onto Assistant Cheng, with no real intention of training Xu Tian at all.
But now... it seemed the bait had worked.
Fei Chuan would have no choice but to recognize Xu Tian’s ability. And knowing his boss well, Assistant Cheng was sure: Fei Chuan wouldn’t let an unpolished diamond go to waste, especially not someone working under his beloved.
And just as he predicted, Fei Chuan had indeed read through Xu Tian’s file — and as he read, his expression grew solemn.
