Chapter 31 - Talking With Mia

Shigella Sales Department.

Jake was sprawled over his desk, his face filled with exhaustion.

It seemed like only nine days had passed, but only the team members who participated in the competition knew how grueling it had been. It was like a student finishing their entire summer vacation homework on the last day.

What was drained wasn't just their mental energy but also their physical stamina.

Jake yawned repeatedly, having barely slept well these past few days. Although it was Jake who had taken the initiative to approach those companies, the influence of "Shigella" was extraordinary.

When signing the letters of intent, many companies had secretly reached out to Jake. Some treated him to meals, while others outright bribed him with red envelopes.

Their intentions were obvious.

Jake was sharp. Without offending them, he tactfully refused. He was aiming for the championship in the selection competition. He couldn't touch, nor would he touch, such ill-gotten gains!

Of course, among the companies Jake had invited, there were some trying to pull off a scam. Any that could negatively impact Shigella were all turned away by Jake.

He only selected reputable and high-quality enterprises. After signing the contracts, the remaining steps had almost nothing to do with Jake!

It had to be said that Jake's special ability was highly practical! It eliminated a lot of trouble with fraud.

Cabel, looking smug, saw Jake's exhausted state and teased, "What's wrong? This little performance already wore you out? How are you gonna keep up with me in the future?"

Lily, sitting across from him, couldn't stand Cabel's annoying expression and quickly retorted, "You have the nerve to say that. Jake's performance is higher than both of ours combined."

"Look at you. We're a team. The team's victory is my victory. See how I barely exerted any effort and still easily won the championship."

Jake couldn't stand Cabel's bragging anymore and got up to head to the break room.

"Gonna grab some coffee to wake up!"

Cabel was about to follow when Lena returned from outside, so he immediately switched to fawning over his goddess instead.

Lily also tactfully stopped talking.

Lena sat back at her workstation gloomily, her beautiful eyes avoiding everyone's gaze. She was seething with jealousy inside. She had used her looks to join a strong team, only to end up in fourth place. The championship went to Jake's team, whom she had looked down on.

"I never expected Jake to be so capable. There haven't been any rumors about him having a girlfriend lately. Maybe I should try getting close to him. After all, he's strong and sturdy, unlike that deadbeat."

Fortunately, Jake wasn't around to hear this, or he would've been disgusted all over again.

Cabel hovered around Lena like a lapdog, and Lena, for once, didn't push him away. The championship team's rewards were substantial, so it wouldn't hurt to give Cabel some hints.

...

The break room was sparsely populated.

After making his coffee, Jake found a secluded corner, sipping his drink while calling his girlfriend.

The morning had been spent at an awards ceremony, though Manager Mina was away on a business trip and couldn't attend.

The atmosphere was electric. Aside from beautiful women, nothing got people as excited as money.

Jake's team won the championship by a landslide. There was admiration, jealousy, resentment, and congratulations...

The other two teams had been the favorites to win before Jake joined. Director Brant temporarily took Manager Mina's place to hand out the awards.

The cash prizes were deposited directly into their accounts, while the performance bonuses would come with the company's next payroll.

It was noon, and Mia quickly answered the call.

"Mia, I did it!" Jake couldn't hide his joy.

On the other end, Mia was having lunch with her colleagues. Hearing Jake's good news, she ignored the odd looks around her and blurted out, "I knew my Jake was the best!"

Her clear, bell-like voice came through the phone. Whenever something happy happened, Mia couldn't control her volume.

"Haha, today I'm treating. Pick any restaurant you want. I've got money now!" Jake said dotingly.

"Mm, today? Today might not work."

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing much. It's Auntie's birthday today. You didn't know, but Auntie got divorced recently and has been feeling down. Mom invited her over to cheer her up under the guise of celebrating her birthday." Mia's mood dipped as she spoke.

She had only learned about Auntie's divorce from her mom. Rumor had it that Auntie had married her husband against their grandparents' wishes years ago. Without any children, she was now alone after the divorce.

At the mention of Auntie, Jake's hand holding the coffee trembled slightly, causing ripples in the cup.

"Jake, why aren't you saying anything?"

"Nothing. Let's move our date to tomorrow then. You should spend time with Auntie today!" Jake didn't know what to say. Every time Auntie was mentioned, his heart felt like it had been pecked by a sparrow.

"Mhm, sorry. Today was supposed to be your celebration..."

"It's fine. You think I won't feast without you? Hehe, today I'm gonna splurge hard." Jake deftly changed the subject. He didn't want Mia to feel guilty.

"Hmph, I knew it. You'd totally eat without me. My friend told me..." Mia rambled on and on.

"Got it? Tomorrow I'm gonna eat you broke."

"Sure, sure. Even if you eat me broke, I wouldn't complain if you ate me."

"Ew, who'd eat you? You're not even tasty."

"You said I was tasty last time. You even said you loved eating me."

"I did not..." Mia cut herself off, as if remembering something. "You're awful. I'm ignoring you."

Hearing Mia's flustered voice, Jake immediately pictured his girlfriend's blushing face, which was incredibly enticing.

"Jake, Director Brant wants to see you." A colleague's voice called from afar.

"Gotta go. The boss is calling. Talk later. Have fun tonight!"

"Mhm, bye."

Jake hung up, downed his coffee, and walked into Director Brant's office.

"Knock knock..." freёweɓnovel.com

"Come in."

Jake approached Director Brant's desk and said softly, "Director Brant, you wanted to see me?"

"Yes." The balding, overweight man spoke in an awkward bureaucratic tone.

"Jake, right? You haven't been with the company long."

"That's correct."

"Mhm, good work. Young people willing to endure hardship will go far. Keep it up! Also, once Manager Mina returns, you'll accompany her on a business trip. Learn well. This is a rare opportunity."

"Thank you, Director. I'll study diligently under Manager Mina's guidance."

"Alright. You're leaving on the 5th next month for three days. Manager Mina will fill you in on the details when she's back." Director Brant's bulky body sank into the leather chair, which creaked loudly under the weight.

"Understood. Thank you, Director. I'll take my leave now."

"Mhm."
