Tale of the Red Dragon Without Dragon's Might-Chapter 35 - New Goals
35: Chapter 35 New Goals
35 -35 New Goals
Being of humble origins is not a disgrace; it’s the ability to be flexible that makes a man.
Leon didn’t dwell on it for too long and soon decided to turn back to search for the Kobolds.
This isn’t about eating the humble pie; this is about giving the Kobolds a chance.
Leon had an excellent memory and easily found his way back, landing near his former nest.
Next, he planned to encounter the Kobolds on his way home and, seeing their “devotion,” benevolently offer them a chance.
Unless another Dragon appeared, it was unlikely that the Kobolds would move allegiance, but Dragons are rare—being nearly perfect creatures, Dragons are certainly capable of reproduction, but that doesn’t mean they are willing to, just as many of the middle class do not desire children—so the chances were slim.
With this in mind, Leon was very confident about his journey, only to find not a single trace of a Kobold upon arrival.
Where have all the Kobolds gone?
How come they have vanished completely?
Could it be that after he left, some creature came by to take over his ecological niche, launching a massacre and slaughtering all the Kobolds?
No powerful monster was needed, just an Owlbear would be enough to wipe out those Kobolds thoroughly.
With this thought, Leon dug through the Kobolds’ lair, only to find it completely empty, indicating that the Kobolds weren’t slaughtered or eaten by some creature; they probably packed up and moved house.
Why move house?
Leon thought of a possibility; those Kobolds must have seen him leave, packed their bags, and attempted to follow his steps, but couldn’t possibly catch up with him…
But was he that alluring to the Kobolds?
He was completely unaware; as the strongest among the Colorful Dragons, the Red Dragon, he had killed the Annis Hag and even reminded the Kobolds to pick up the leftovers.
In the eyes of the Kobolds, he was a powerful and generous existence, truly extraordinary in this world.
The Kobolds yearned for Leon, but Leon was indifferent to them, and since the Kobolds were gone, it was time to look for other followers.
There were other Kobolds as they were everywhere.
As long as they didn’t occupy the villages of Humans, Elves, Dwarves, and so on, to attract adventurers, those Goblins could be bullied without care, although Orcs needed to be approached with some caution.
Nevertheless, Leon still looked for the Kobolds as they were familiar to him.
However, with one flying in the sky and the other digging underground, and it being broad daylight now, it wasn’t a good time for the sunlight-sensitive Kobolds to come out, and so he was doomed not to find any.
Leon left.
He remembered encountering Goblins a few times in the past.
He surely didn’t care at that time, but now when he needed them, he regretted their scarcity.
Relying on memory, he located the place he had seen the Goblins before and searched nearby.
Eventually, he found a scrawny goblin tribe in a valley.
Leon descended from the sky and appeared in the center of the goblin tribe.
Holding the belief that Goblins were not dragon sycophants, it was best to show his dominance to subdue them more easily, he roared loudly and knocked down the goblin’s humble houses.
The Goblins, seeing the Red Dragon descend from the sky, could not muster the slightest resistance and could only scurry away in fear.
“Nobody is allowed to run,” Leon declared aloud.
“Submit to your new king.”
Leon went on with the script he had already thought out.
“I spare your lives, but should anyone dare oppose or flee, they’re seeking death.”
“Now, come out.”
Had the Kobolds been here, hearing his speech would surely have made them tremble with excitement.
Alas, Goblins are not Kobolds, and while they indeed are quite adept at submitting to more powerful beings, that’s as far as it goes.
A trembling Goblin scurried forward and prostrated in front of Leon, exclaiming: “Great Red Dragon, we pledge our allegiance to you.”
With one Goblin leading the way and the Red Dragon not harming it, the rest of the Goblins crawled out from their messy corners.
“Boss.”
“You’re so big.”
“Sul is the most obedient.”
“Old Finger can grow mushrooms, do not eat Old Finger.”
“I can raise chickens.”
A bunch of goblins, big and small, talking over each other, gave Leon such a headache that he couldn’t help but shout, “Silence, shut up.”
Immediately, all the goblins fell silent as if stricken by frost.
Leon looked around, climbed to a higher position, on top of a big rock covered in vines, and looked down upon the horde of goblins, saying, “Everyone present, swear your loyalty to me now.”
After more noise and clamor, all the goblins kneeled down to Leon, led by one of their own.
Without any burden.
From this scene alone, Leon unquestionably became their king, their master.
It’s good that those kobolds who persistently hassled Leon were not present; otherwise, seeing this scene where a Red Dragon spontaneously demands a group of goblins’ loyalty—as if a Divine were surrendering to a goblin—it would seem as if the sky were about to collapse.
Leon was waiting, waiting for the familiar ‘ding-dong’ sound to ring, but after a long wait without a response, he furiously turned to the goblins and roared, “You dare to deceive me!
Seeking death!”
“We dare not.”
“We wouldn’t dare.”
“We didn’t.”
The goblins kowtowed like smashing garlic.
Leon also felt that the goblins didn’t dare deceive him, after all, these small and simple creatures were easily ruled by larger, smarter, more organized, more ferocious or more magic-powerful beings, and in this case, he stood at the top of the food chain as a Red Dragon.
Not to mention these lowest-level goblins, even Bugbears and Hobgoblins wouldn’t dare to be mischievous in front of a Red Dragon.
Leon pondered, perhaps these goblins are indeed too weak and useless, unqualified to become the Red Dragon’s subjects, merely non-flammable trash.
In a sense, like grey-named monsters in a game, killing them wouldn’t earn any experience.
Observing carefully, this goblin tribe didn’t have a single wolf, and even the strongest-looking goblin was skinny and dehydrated, with no proper weapons to speak of, no sentries in the camp, and no traps on the outskirts, only mushrooms seen everywhere, obviously relying on mushrooms for sustenance.
This attempt doesn’t count.
All efforts wasted.
Leon prepared to leave, spreading his wings but then folding them back.

“You must have lived here for quite some time,” Leon asked, “Tell me, are there any formidable creatures nearby, or any powers?” He must conquer some powerful beings.
These goblins had no combat ability, as witnessed or heard from rumors, but they still had some information.
Thus, Leon learned of an Ogre gang roaming nearby, a terrible serpent that ate several goblins, a talking tree, and half a year ago a group of Orcs took over an abandoned fortress, supposedly there was a treasure hidden in that fortress, and those Orcs went precisely for the treasure.
“How do you know there is a treasure hidden inside that abandoned fortress?” asked Leon.
“Those Orcs captured many goblins to scout for them, we are the ones who escaped,” a goblin said resentfully.
Leon’s eyes swirled, he nodded thoughtfully.
“How dare they bully my servants.”
“Justice shall prevail, evil shall be vanquished.”
Leon took off, flying towards the abandoned fortress, leaving a hoard of goblins tearfully watching behind.
