Tale of the Red Dragon Without Dragon's Might-Chapter 40 - Play It by Ear
40: Chapter 40: Play It by Ear
40 -40: Play It by Ear
After seeing the Orcs enter the battlements, Leon, with no desire to play with a weak Ogre of the same size, gently fluttered his wings to take flight and landed on the roof of the Chapel for a short rest.
Honestly, he had been running around quite a bit today, dealing with many things, feeling like he had done more than in the past several months.
Under normal circumstances, Leon’s sleep would definitely last until tomorrow, perhaps even until tomorrow’s afternoon, but he woke up before dark today because he kept thinking about the Orcs exploring the battlements.
When he woke up, his mind was a bit groggy, and it wasn’t until after he spent some time in the wind that he fully woke up.
Yawning, Leon noticed that all the Orcs had come out of the battlements.
Lorug was resting, and when he saw Leon had woken up and landed in the central courtyard, he hurried over to greet him.
“You guys came out…” Leon asked, “How was the loot?”
“The master will know as soon as he looks,” Lorug led Leon to their camp, located beside a row of wooden houses next to the city wall, which looked quite decent after repairs, “We’ve taken out all the valuable things and put them here.”
Leon glanced around briefly, remembered that the effect of his Heavenly Eye Technique had expired, and quickly recast the spell.
Cloth garments, leather armor, chainmail, a set of rusty plate armor, a Big Iron Shield, a heavy Hard Head Hammer surrounded by faint Magical Spirit, a Ritual Dagger, and there was also a Magic Wand among the Magic Weapons…
Why wasn’t there a sword?

A bunch of scrolls, a messy array of potions, money mainly in copper coins and silver coins, red and green gemstones of unknown value, a silver water jug, a wooden box filled with various pieces of jewelry…
“There’s quite a bit of stuff…” Leon said.
As soon as Leon finished speaking, Lorug’s expression changed suddenly, and he quickly said, “We definitely didn’t hide anything, I can swear to our God.”
“Don’t be so agitated, I was just making an offhand remark, there’s no mistrust, why the fuss…” Leon gave a wry smile, thinking that the notorious reputation of the Red Dragon tyrant was well-known; serving a ruler was like sleeping with a tiger, and everyone was afraid.
Lorug glanced at Leon and, seeing nothing unusual, felt temporarily reassured.
“That Mage ghost was killed by me, and those pesky ghosts as well…” Of course, Leon wouldn’t miss out on the spoils of war, and he organized his words, “How do you think we should divide these things?”
Hearing the Red Dragon’s words, Lorug felt his head grow big, unsure of how to divide the loot.
Giving too little would not satisfy the Red Dragon, giving too much would definitely displease the others, not daring to vent their anger on the Red Dragon, most likely would blame him.
Lorug was feeling a headache when Dekka walked over, casually picked up the heavy Hard Head Hammer, and was just about to speak when Lorug stopped him, saying, “Shut your mouth.”
Lorug took a deep breath, looking into Leon’s eyes, said, “We are the master’s subordinates, these weapons and equipment may enhance our combat power, which in turn improves the combat power of the master’s subordinates, allowing us to serve the master better…”
“There are still monsters in battlements, and many of us were injured exploring it, with one death; we have also made great sacrifices…” Lorug said while watching Leon’s expressions.
Dragons are capable of complex expressions.
Leon looked around and did indeed see many injured Orcs.
“Besides weapons and equipment, scrolls, potions, money, gemstones, and jewelry are all the master’s,” Lorug carefully said, “These items, once sold, are definitely worth much more than those pieces of armor and weaponry.”
Leon glanced at the distribution and, in principle, agreed with the Orcs’ method.
After all, he had no use for those weapons and armor, and they weren’t remarkable enough to be collectible…
In fact, there was nothing here that interested him, including the money and gemstones, which he would take just because they were free.
“Did you not find a single book when you explored the battlements?” Leon suddenly remembered to ask.
“There were,” Dekka interrupted, “but since they were of no use other than for burning, we didn’t take them.”
“Find all the books for me.
I mean all of them.” Leon pondered whether he was being too greedy, considering he might need the Orcs’ help in the future, “You can keep the potions…
and the scrolls as well.”
Leon was skeptical about the potions, and he couldn’t even cast spells by tearing scrolls.
Since that was the case, why not do them a favor?
“Thank you for your generosity, master,” Lorug praised.
He could hardly believe that a greedy Red Dragon would be so generous.
“So why aren’t you moving yet…
I want all the books except those from the battlements.” With no computer games to play or smartphone videos to watch, he could only read books to kill time.
Thinking of this, Leon couldn’t help but sigh, “Hurry up, I haven’t eaten anything after a whole day’s work.”
“We have pigs in the Beast Pen,” said Lorug.
“I will have someone slaughter one right now…
Dekka, go arrange for people to move all the books from the battlements.”
By nightfall, Leon finally had the chance to eat cooked food after a long while—the Orcs actually knew how to prepare it for him.
With Dekka and the Orcs moving all the books from the battlements, including those from other parts of the abandoned fortress found elsewhere, and stuffing them into a chest with the money and gemstones, Leon considered leaving.
“That’s about it, I’m leaving now.” Leon had completely forgotten about just having taken these Orcs as his subjects, and the goblins were even more a distant memory.
If it weren’t for the reward, he would genuinely prefer not to have any subjects at all.
“Wait,” Dekka suddenly stood up.
“Dekka wants to ask the master when you will lead us to conquer the forest?”
Dekka swung his Hard Head Hammer, now his weapon, and continued, “I can’t wait to wage war for my master.”
Hearing the Orcs’ words, Leon felt a surge of temptation.
Since there was a reward for acquiring subjects, conquering a forest, conquering a domain, shouldn’t go unrewarded.
Then Leon remembered how troublesome it was to subdue this group of Orcs today, and he couldn’t imagine how much trouble conquering a forest would bring, which somewhat discouraged him.
Moreover, conquering a domain was something he could do when he grew up, in his teenage phase.
By then, just flying in the sky would guarantee success without any danger.
Why should he struggle so much as a Young Dragon, risking life and limb?
“I have other matters,” Leon spoke, “Conquering forests and the like, I have no time for that.”
“What plans does the master have for us then?” asked Lorug.
“No plans, you can manage on your own,” Leon spread his wings.
“I will come to you if I need something.
If not, do as you please.”
Leon hugged the chest that the Orcs had helped him pack and, flapping his wings, took off.
He activated the Gathering Form and Scattering Energy spell, which enhanced his speed and was also a spell for hastening travel.
In an instant, he disappeared into the night sky.
Even though they had seen it once before, the Orcs were still left with their mouths agape in awe, as their master was incredibly fast, so fast that he left an afterimage.
