Tale of the Red Dragon Without Dragon's Might-Chapter 50 - Tension Between the Sword and the Crossbow
50: Chapter 50 Tension Between the Sword and the Crossbow
50 -50 Tension Between the Sword and the Crossbow
“Done.
We set out three days from now to slay the Red Dragon and loot its lair.”
This village lies beyond the forest; there used to be another one, but it was so small and weak that it collapsed at the first assault of the Gnoll warband.
It’s still the same tavern where the Human Warrior and his remaining two companions recited the story that took place in the village head’s house.
“Do we have to let the Red Dragon live for three more days?” The Half-Elf Ranger clenched his fists and pounded the tabletop.
“Three days is not a lot of time; everyone needs to prepare,” the Human Warrior patted the Half-Elf Ranger’s shoulder, signaling him to be patient, “The Spear Crossbows are fixed in place; they need to be dismantled and attached to wheels, and also fitted with chains, so when it hits the Red Dragon, we can pull it down from the sky.
Plus, Priestess Freya has gone out and won’t return until tomorrow.”
“Let’s speed it up,” the Half-Elf Ranger sighed and slapped his face, “I need to shave my beard; I can’t continue to wallow in depression…
Pudding also died, I need to find another animal companion.
How about a crow?
I want it to peck out the Red Dragon’s eyes, but I’m afraid it’s not strong enough.”
“That’s your business,” said the Human Warrior.
“I don’t understand it.”
The Half-Elf Ranger nodded.
Three days really isn’t much time; with the rise and fall of the sun, it soon passed.
A bright sunny morning.
Today, the Human Warrior didn’t wear his plate armor, which he’d left in the inn’s room, opting for a mail that allowed better movement.
In addition to his Longsword and shield, he carried four Spears and a Heavy Crossbow, maximizing his ranged capabilities.
The Half-Elf Ranger just found an ordinary bird as an animal companion; it surely couldn’t inflict damage, but as an “eye,” it was more than adequate.
The female Mage got up early this morning, sitting on the balcony reading through her Magic Book—a record of spells each Mage painstakingly notates with personal symbols, lists, annotations, and ciphers.
She spent the morning documenting spells, especially ones targeted at the Red Dragon.
The Levitation Skill and Jumping Technique could help the team swiftly close in on the Red Dragon.
The Tasha’s Mad Laugh and Monster Immobilization Technique could be attempted to control it.
Sacos mentioned that when the Red Dragon becomes invisible, it turns into a gust of wind, so if one feels carefully, one could “see” it; Wind Creation Technique might just work.
It’s uncertain if Dispel Magic can knock down the Red Dragon’s Flying Sword.
After all, it’s only a Red Dragon Young Dragon; why are there so many spells, including ones never seen before?
Once back, a dissertation is definitely in order.
“Is everyone here?”
“Wait, Mark hasn’t arrived.”
“I’m here, I’m here.
Do your eyes only see pretty girls?”
Besides the three of them, the Dragon-hunting team numbers nearly thirty.
The Civilian Captain and the Vice Captain of the Civilian Army are both high-level professionals, Priestess Freya is a tall woman in her forties primarily responsible for temple affairs, and a young girl is a Martial Monk… From the watchtower disassembled and mounted on wheels, two Militia members pushed the Spear Crossbow with ease.
Two Rangers, the Half-Elf Ranger and Vice Captain of the Civilian Army, scouted on either side.
Especially focused today, the Half-Elf Ranger dropped each Goblin with an arrow, until they encountered Hobgoblins.
“One Hobgoblin Darkblade, it was cunning, I didn’t manage to kill it and let it escape.”
The Half-Elf Ranger remembered his Scout duty, to report any mishaps in a timely manner rather than to chase down Hobgoblins, as he had the skills to kill the enemy given a little time.
“There’s a Hobgoblin battalion in the forest, it must be from that one,” suggested the Civilian Captain, “They stumbled upon our village once before but were spotted and chased down by our vice captain.
Although it escaped in the end, they dared not enter the village again afterwards.”
“I’ve only heard that Orcs are underlings of the Red Dragon; I didn’t know Hobgoblins were as well,” the Human Warrior analyzed.
“Wasn’t it said that the Red Dragon has been here for a long time?
It makes no sense that these Hobgoblins weren’t subjugated over such a period, and we shouldn’t worry about them suddenly being subdued in these few days.”
The team continued onwards.
The Spear Crossbow wasn’t too large, it had wheels, and was under the effect of Levitation Skill so two Militia members pushed it with ease, without slowing the group’s pace.
Thus, it was not long before they arrived at the low hill where the Red Dragon had built its nest.
Having reached their destination, they were on the verge of battle; the Half-Elf Ranger and the Vice Captain of the Civilian Army, responsible for scouting, rejoined the main group.
The Human Warrior took the lead to the base of the hill, shouting loudly: “Red Dragon!
We are back.”
After waiting for several seconds, the Red Dragon emerged from its lair, perched mid-slope.
The Human Warrior continued to shout: “Why not tuck your tail and scram already?”
“What are you laughing at?” the Human Warrior found the Red Dragon laughing, “What are you laughing at?”
“I really don’t know why you still dare to come.” The Red Dragon’s voice was filled with confidence.
Hearing the Red Dragon’s words, the Human Warrior’s heart skipped a beat and said, “We’ve come to kill you.”
“I’ve always said that those who kill should be ready to be killed themselves.”
“You still dare to talk big at this point.”
“Do you think how my name got out there?
Guess who owns that bunch of Orcs from the abandoned fortress?”
“Even if you are their owner, they are not here.”
“Is it possible that they’re lying in ambush nearby?”
“You think a bunch of Orcs can set up an ambush, and we would easily be deceived by you?”
“They won’t ambush, but I can teach them to ambush, and I’ll eat anyone who disobeys.”
“A bunch of Orcs isn’t enough.”
“What if we add Hobgoblins?

Haven’t you already spotted the Hobgoblin Iron Shadows?”
“The Hobgoblins are also yours?
When did this happen?”
“A few days ago, I had a talk with them.”
The Militia Captain looked around; he saw Orcs emerging from behind the woods one after another.
The leading Orc was exceptionally strong, wearing a suit of plate armor and wielding a Big Iron Shield paired with a Hard Head Hammer.
Beside it stood an Orc Spellcaster holding a Magic Wand, and behind them, that bunch of Orcs didn’t look as shabby as before—they had at least one piece of leather armor each.
The Hobgoblins Warlord came out from another side, holding a two-handed hammer, followed by two squads of Hobgoblins warriors wielding swords and bows on their backs, a squad of Bugbears with hammers, three robust Ogres, and a swarm of Goblins wielding spears and bows.
“Didn’t you say that Red Dragon was alone?” The Militia Captain asked upon seeing this scene.
“I,” the breath of the Human Warrior was already somewhat disordered, “At that time, he was alone.”
“Even if it has helpers, we will not lose.
Without these helpers beside it, I’m not afraid it’ll dare to face us.” The Human Warrior took a step forward, pointing his sword at Leon, “I didn’t expect you to truly be so cunning.”
Leon crouched on the mountain slope, flapping his wings.
“It’s not that I’m cunning.”
“I just want to live.”
“Isn’t it that you all look down on me?
Thinking that after you came knocking on my door, I wouldn’t do anything afterward?”
“Weakness and ignorance are not barriers to survival; arrogance is.”
“I can’t help it either.
I also wanted to live peacefully; it’s you who forced me.”
“Enough.”
“Kill them.”
