Chapter 616: Chapter 616: Did I Hurt You Last Night?

Huo Sijiao looked at him and said, "What else do I need to do?"

She was originally supposed to have someone deliver it to the door but felt it wouldn’t be very polite. So, she brought it herself, though she hadn’t planned on going inside.

The uproar from the company’s celebration banquet between her and Xie Xubai was still fresh, with many employees present at the time. Huo Sijiao didn’t want to deepen the misunderstandings, especially since she couldn’t let go of Shen Xuanzhi in her heart.

Ning Yuan spoke solemnly, "From what President Xie implied, there seems to be something important he needs to discuss with you. Perhaps you should wait in the office; the regular meeting will end in about ten minutes."

Huo Sijiao asked suspiciously, "What important matter?"

"You’ll need to ask President Xie directly about that. I’m not privy to the details," Ning Yuan replied with an innocent smile, "President Xie even stopped at the hospital this morning before coming to the company."

He truly went all out for Xie Xubai.

Huo Sijiao was half-convinced, her mind unwillingly flashing back to the scene from last night. Her fingers dropped to her side, her palms slightly cold, and her fingertips still slightly numb.

She bit her lip. Was her grip too strong last night in that chaotic situation?

The car braked suddenly and violently, and she hadn’t controlled the force of her actions as she pressed down.

Morning hospital visit?

Huo Sijiao couldn’t help but overthink it. Could what Xie Xubai wanted to talk about be related to that incident?

Her face was full of a resolute demeanor as she looked at Ning Yuan and said, "Alright, lead the way then."

"Certainly."

Ning Yuan had no idea what conclusion the eldest lady of the Huo Family had reached, making her delicate face take on an oddly bittersweet and suppressed expression.

"This way, please," Ning Yuan said as he led the way, his demeanor respectful.

Huo Sijiao walked behind him, her heart a bundle of nerves. The receptionist at the front desk maintained her polite composure, though her eyes betrayed an air of curiosity upon spotting Huo Sijiao.

Ning Yuan rarely welcomed collaboration prospects like this particular young lady, unfamiliar and seemingly new.

His attitude was more cordial and approachable than when greeting collaborators, clearly differentiated.

Some employees passing through the lobby couldn’t help but take quick glances at Huo Sijiao. A few mid-level management personnel recognized her as Huo Xingzhou’s sister, who had once appeared at the celebration banquet.

Back then, she had stirred up significant conflict with Pei Chun and even publicly declared that President Xie was pursuing her. Most notably, President Xie hadn’t denied the claim.

Over the years, President Xie had maintained a clean and straightforward demeanor, with Pei Chun the sole annoying exception.

But President Xie had always kept his distance and displayed no affections for Pei Chun.

Everyone knew Pei Chun wasn’t favored by President Xie.

They watched as Ning Yuan escorted Huo Sijiao to the private elevator reserved for the CEO, whispering and snickering quietly.

"This Miss Huo could very well be our future boss lady, huh?"

"Shhh, I went to Haicheng during President Xie’s visit too—they brought up the topic of marrying Huo Xingzhou’s sister then. A union between the two families would only strengthen them. Yunqi Group’s future would be even brighter; looks like President Xie’s big moment is coming up soon."

"She’s carrying clothes, isn’t she? Doesn’t look like a bag for women’s wear."

"No wonder President Xie canceled all his outside appointments today and moved the department meetings to earlier. The finance team might be in tears right now..."

...

The elevator reached the top floor.

Huo Sijiao followed Ning Yuan past the secretarial department and arrived at the end of the hallway.

Ning Yuan opened the door and said, "Miss Huo, please come in. This is President Xie’s office. He’ll be here shortly; you can sit here for a moment. I’ll go make you some tea, or would you prefer coffee or a soft drink?"

"Just warm water, please."

Huo Sijiao was in such a mental mess that tea or drinks didn’t appeal to her.

She’d heard that men were physically fragile sometimes, and she wasn’t sure about Xie Xubai’s circumstance. For him to visit the hospital—it definitely couldn’t be optimistic.

Ning Yuan’s tone remained gentle, "Alright then. You may sit on the sofa and wait for a while. I’ll bring you some warm water."

He softly shut the door behind him.

Huo Sijiao stood in the office, looking around at its simple, natural wooden decor.

The coffee table was designed as a long, wooden micro-landscape, with tiny fish swimming inside, adding a touch of playfulness. At one end sat a lotus-scent incense holder, exuding a faint aroma of sandalwood.

The surrounding furniture had a refined, traditional Chinese style, perfectly complementing Xie Xubai’s graceful, classical gentleman image.

Taking a deep breath, Huo Sijiao sat down on the sofa.

Ning Yuan quickly returned with a cup of warm water, placing it on the coffee table in front of her. Huo Sijiao thanked him softly.

"Miss Huo, please relax here while I go check on the meeting room situation."

"There’s really no rush. President Xie’s work is the priority," Huo Sijiao instinctively responded. She still didn’t know how to face Xie Xubai.

Ning Yuan smiled slightly and was about to open the door when he saw Xie Xubai walking toward them.

Quickly stepping aside, Ning Yuan said, "President Xie, Miss Huo is waiting in the office for you. Said she was here to deliver clothes. I’ll leave you two to it."

Expertly reading the situation, Ning Yuan left directly.

Xie Xubai gave a casual reply, "Go keep an eye on the finance department; something’s off with the recent accounts."

"Understood."

Once Ning Yuan departed, Xie Xubai stepped into the office and gently closed the door behind him.

The door clicked softly as it locked in place.

Huo Sijiao couldn’t help standing up, her back straightening as she faced Xie Xubai, her entire posture tense.

"Mr. Xie, this is for you."

She handed over the bag she had been carrying, "The clothes I promised to compensate you for last night."

Xie Xubai glanced at the logo on the packaging bag and said, "Very thoughtful of you. Please, have a seat while we talk."

"Oh."

Obediently, Huo Sijiao sat down.

Her cheeks flushed red, and her ears burned with heat.

She didn’t know how to broach the subject at hand.

Steadying her erratic emotions, she said, "Mr. Xie, when I was at the company entrance earlier, Ning Tezhu mentioned that you had something important to discuss with me. May I ask what it is?"

Xie Xubai’s brows shifted slightly upon hearing this.

He saw through Ning Yuan’s little scheme.

Setting the file folder in his hands down on the desk, Xie Xubai sat across from Huo Sijiao and said, "I don’t have anything particularly important. But you look like you’ve been holding back—do you have something to say to me?"

"Uh..."

Huo Sijiao froze for a moment.

With some struggle, she began, "I heard from Ning Tezhu that you went to the hospital this morning?"

"Mm." Xie Xubai adjusted his jacket and replied, "I did go."

It had been for a routine check-up, requiring an early morning fast.

"Then..."

Huo Sijiao puffed her cheeks, sneaking glances at him before finally summoning her courage to ask, "Did the doctor mention anything concerning?"

"Hmm? It was just a regular check-up. Nothing serious."

Xie Xubai replied indifferently, pouring himself a steaming cup of tea at the desk. The rising vapor almost obscured his strikingly handsome face.

The haze only accentuated the depth in his gaze, which seemed to linger purposefully on her.

Huo Sijiao pressed her lips together, thinking he might be too embarrassed to discuss it.

But she wasn’t one to beat around the bush. So, she took a deep breath, looked straight at him, and said firmly, "Mr. Xie, forgive my bluntness. Did I injure you last night?"
