Chapter 208: You will not DIE!

Selene POV

I burst into tears holding tightly unto Noah as soon as we were alone in his room.

I had practically just cut off every tie from my children’s father and if they ever knew... they would not forgive me, especially Maeve and even Vina. Every child needs a father, I know this more than anyone but every child deserves a father that truly gives a shit. A dad that cares so much about them not the thing Xavier was practicing.

I sobbed in Noah’s arms – he kept stroking my hair whispering sweet nothing to me until I was spent. I lay limp in his hands until he broke the silence.

"Do you want something to drink... or eat?" He asked.

"No!" I murmured pressing deeper into him "I love you, Noah..." I continued "It took me seeing you wrapped in that hospital bed for me to realize how much I cannot bear to stay without you and I know it’s a bad way to realize that you love someone but I couldn’t just help it. I love you so much," I pushed away from him to gauge his reaction.

He smiled, nodding his head "I love you too, Selene and I’ve loved you since the first day I saw you. Don’t worry, it doesn’t matter if you don’t love me as much... my love for you would be enough, I promise,".

I sighed, returning to his arms again. "The girls will be mad when they learn that they can no longer go to their father as much as they want. I don’t know if I will change my mind in the future because I think I did it on a spur but I hope not. I can no longer trust him,".

"I know that and I understand that more than anyone, Selene," Noah started quietly "Only, you need to understand that no two people can be alike. Me and Xavier are nothing alike. Perhaps the only thing we share is blood but we cannot be the same people. Maybe you need to give him a benefit of doubt. He was a spoilt little boy growing up and...".

"You were a spoilt little boy too, Noah," I cut him short for fear he’d convince me again "But I don’t see you treating the children like they aren’t yours. I know how much you love the girls and how much you’re willing to sacrifice for them. He on the other hand is just thrilled to be a father and doesn’t understand that it takes so much more,".

"Selene!" Noah sighed "You cannot keep the girls away from their father and knowing who Xavier is, do you think he would not try to contact them one way or the other?"

"Well, not on my watch. It’s a good thing you asked him not to set foot on Moon Whisper again, maybe you should...".

"He’s family, Selene... I cannot ask him not to come entirely and when he does come, I cannot ask them to throw him into the prison or something. He’s my sister’s son,".

"But you just punished his mother, why can’t you punish him?" I pursued relentlessly.

"Nora and Xavier are two different persons and you were wrong for telling him that he’s just like his mother. I practically raised, Xavier. He’s my favourite relative. Yes, he may have his issues but he’s not as bad as you think he is and I know you’re trying desperately to love me...".

"Trying desperately to love you?" My eyes widened as I turned to him, offended "What is that supposed to mean, Noah. I love... I am not trying to force you or desperately as you say,".

Annoyed, I slipped out of the bed, towards the small kitchenette to pour myself a glass of water. When I came back, Noah was sitting at the edge of the bed, a patient smile on his face.

"You can’t fool me, Selene," he said quietly "I knew you were not madly in love with me when I insisted, I wanted you. I couldn’t even determine if you would love me along the line and I also knew there’ll always be Xavier in the picture whether we like it or not. But the bottom line is you do not love me as much as you think you do,".

I stared at him, dumbfounded. "You think I just confessed to you for nothing...".

"Maybe as a consolation," Noah furnished and rose to his feet then started towards me. "Maybe you’ve taken pity on me and feel that I should be rewarded with your love for saving your daughters or perhaps, you think I am a reliable and trustworthy man and for that, you should love me when deep down you know your heart still belongs to Xavier,".

"That’s not true!" I denied vehemently "And you’ve been great to the girls even before this. I will still love you even if you don’t exactly save them,".

"I will do if given the opportunity a thousand times over. I am their uncle and it’s only right..." he inhaled and exhaled, then focused his gaze on me "It’s not a bad thing for you to still want, Xavier... in fact, I don’t want you to cut him out of our lives. I want you to let him in. He’s my family as much as he’s yours and you know that,".

"I don’t understand you, Noah!" I sighed, hating that we were fighting barely hours he returned from the hospital "Are you for Xavier or not?"

He sighed "All I am saying, Selene is that you let him in. Please... He’s a part of your children... Maeve and Vina are not my kids... I love them so much by the way but I have a baby coming soon and who knows my feelings might change and I might make this new baby the center of my world. It’s normal because the girls have their father and I can only give them a little of my love... the bottom line is... you should make amends with Xavier... maybe not today but eventually...".

"I don’t want to do that!" I said adamantly.

"It is not an option... you must Selene!" Noah said aggressively "He’s the only man I can trust around you,".

I shuddered at his words, taking a step back from him "What exactly are you saying? Why does it feel like you’re pushing Xavier on me. Do you like your family so much that you wouldn’t mind your nephew to take your wife to himself? Is that what you’re trying to tell me?"

"Of course not, Selene!" he sighed "It seems like I’ve not made myself clear enough for you to understand. You need Xavier, in your life, he’s the only one strong enough to stop my family from hurting you. Long when I’m gone, I want to be able to know that I left you in good hands,". freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

A cold shudder ran through my body "Go where? I don’t understand,".

He sighed again and reached for my hands "I’m dying, Selene... I’ve got a few months left, a year or two if I am lucky..." his voice caught in his throat as tears gathered in his eyes "I might drop dead even tomorrow, right now... I’m scared that I will never be able to hold my child in my hands or watch you sleep while the sun rises like a halo behind you... I want to be here, Selene... I want to be right here with you... but...".

He broke down into tears. I just stood there motionless and mute, wondering if this was another of those bad dreams that I will snap out from. Was this even real? This life that I am living... wouldn’t death have been a better remedy?

I sank on the ground in front of him, watching as he ran towards me, and sank next to me, worry in his eyes.

"Are you alright?" he asked.

"The moon goddess hates my guts!" I said with a sad smile, palming his cheeks with my hands "She gives me the worst of fates, have me trapped in between an uncle and his nephew, disrupts my life constantly with things that I never knew could exist and now..." my blank eyes sought Noah’s "She wants to take my best friend away from me,".

"Don’t see it like that, Selene," Noah kissed the top of my hair, the corners of his eyes crinkling with a smile "I thought I was going to die without being a father but you’re giving me the best of gifts, Selene... the best and most precious of gifts and it feels like I don’t even deserve you... gosh, Selene... You’re going to make me a father. Long when I am gone, people will look at our child and say – that’s Noah’s son. I couldn’t be happier,".

"Well!" I struggled into a kneeling position and grabbed his face "You’re not going to die, Noah! Not on my watch,".

"I wish we could manifest anything we want," he shook his head "My weak nature inherited from my human mom keeps weighing down on me and seriously, I think I have outlived every normal human alive. I am more than a hundred and twenty years old, human age... I am grateful for that,".

"I don’t care!" I rose to my feet, determination in my eyes. "You may not know this but I have a way of snatching things I love from the jaws of death and winning...It won’t be different this time around,".

I took a deep breath, with a smile on my face... "You WILL NOT DIE!"
