The Creatures That We Are-Chapter 1117: More than You Can Chew
Chapter 1117: More than You Can Chew
To occupy another's fate required three steps:
First, pry.
Second, link.
Third, occupy.
The first step had been done. With Wang Shu being the smoke screen, Greed had created her domain seamlessly the moment the Domain of Night was deactivated. The fate of all those inside the domain fell under Greed’s watchful eyes.
The second step—linking—typically demanded either physical contact or surveillance spanning twenty-four hours. Both approaches posed significant challenges.
But there existed another way: forming secondary connections, using someone else's fate as a bridge.
Ke Yo’s fate had long been occupied by Greed. In fact, Ke Yo wasn’t her real name. It had merely been a throwaway name derived from the written characters of “strange”[1].
Like Surnamed Li, she had lost both her true name and fate long ago, cut loose from the world she should have been part of. Yet none had questioned it. The world simply accepted that she had always been Ke Yo.
She had been Greed's carefully cultivated pawn until Zhuang Mei's interference derailed everything. If not for Greed’s power lying dormant in Ke Yo’s body, she would’ve fallen to the same fate as Edmond.
Though Ke Yo survived that encounter, her memories vanished. Greed's hold on her fate had been reduced to a fragile thread, too weak for discrete manipulation.
But now, with Greed's monsterhood fully awakened and its power restored, everything changed. Those two times Greed had located the awakeners' hideouts wasn’t through Gao Yang's Fate Slides, but through Ke Yo—one of its many eyes.
The next step was to use Ke Yo to lure in the other fish.
Ke Yo had a deep bond with Vermilion Bird. When Vermilion Bird interrupted the ritual to forcibly alter Ke Yo's fate, she unknowingly formed a secondary link with Greed, like a cat tangling itself in the same yarn while trying to free another.
Vermilion Bird also had a deep link with War Tiger, and War Tiger had a sufficient bond with Qing Ling, too. One by one, the targets caught in Greed’s prying domain would all end up caught by Greed’s threads of fate. Then it only had to finish the last step—occupy.
In mere minutes, their fates would belong to Greed entirely.

“Mine!” Surnamed Li's body convulsed with hysterical laughter under Greed's control. “All of your fates are mine!”
Countless thin eyes erupted across the corpse's face, pulling dead muscles into a mockery of expression. The uncanny imitation of life only heightened its horror.
The laughter cut short as black blood spewed from Surnamed Li's mouth.
The tiny eyes at the corners of her lips burst like a blister. The eye on her forehead exploded next, scattering blood across her face.
One by one, half of the eyes on her legs exploded, like a firecracker of gore. Bleeding, she plunged to the ground in a comical way like a clown. A pool of blood soon formed.
Vermilion Bird, War Tiger, and the others sensed their autonomy return. They regained the ability to control themselves physically and mentally.
However, they didn’t immediately move. Wrath and Gluttony were stunned into inaction for a moment, too.
The absurd, bizarre turn of events caught everyone off guard.
After a moment of silence, the omnipresent moonlight sighed. “I knew things wouldn’t be this easy. It’s such a hassle.”
A massive, bright fake moon returned to the sky. The Domain of Night was established once more.
Surnamed Li's body lifted from the crimson pool, hovering. Black mist crawled back to shroud the red eye in her chest—the most crucial one. Where eyes had burst lay rotting holes glazed with blood. The surviving eyes squeezed shut in terror, as if avoiding direct sunlight.
“You’ve done well. Leave the rest to me.”
A gentle, serene voice said.
War Tiger's tense expression cracked into a grin. He spun around with a whoop: “Fuck! Took you long enough!”
The others turned, relief washing over their faces.
A slim figure slowly emerged from the nearby rubble. Moonlight rimmed his silky waist-length black hair. He wore a soft plain shirt, loose light-colored jeans, and no shoes, as if he had just sleepwalked out of his bedroom.
Snow-white skin and delicate features gave him an androgynous beauty, while heterochromatic eyes held mysteries in their distant gaze. His lips curved in a faint smile.
As he walked, debris shifted aside like living things, clearing his path. When he reached his companions, they all felt a warm, heavy sense of security.
It was like survivors in a zombie apocalypse finally reaching a fortified safe house after a night of running, sealing the thick metal door just as the hungry teeth of a zombie swarm snapped shut on empty air.
The night wind rustled Dragon’s long hair. He looked up at Greed from a short distance. His voice was soft, yet booming with authority.
“Trying to have my fate? You’ve bitten off more than you can chew.”
1. Her Talent Strange is 奇怪. “Ke (可)” comes from the lower part of 奇, and Yo (又) comes from the upper right part of 怪. It was mentioned back when she was first introduced that she had a strange name. And it is a strange name since Chinese names usually comprise characters with more concrete meanings, which isn’t the case with Ke Yo. ☜
