The Devil's Good Girl-Chapter 213: Retiring
Chapter 213: Retiring
Fil gazed down on her phone, slowing down her steps on her way to her apartment.
"Vincent?" she muttered, but then answered the call. "Hello?"
"Oh, god, Fil!"
"Vincent, what’s wrong?"
"I heard you didn’t go to the site because of a road accident. Are you okay?" His voice revealed his panic and genuine concern.
Fil smacked her lips, not surprised Vincent heard about it. After all, the raw materials they were going to see today were delivered by Hale Construction.
"I’m fine, Vin," she reassured. "Thanks for checking up on me, but the accident isn’t that big. It’s just that someone suddenly shows up in front of the car and we hit him."
"Oh, is the person okay?"
"Fortunately." She shrugged. "We rescheduled for tomorrow, so you don’t have to worry."
At this point, Fil reached her apartment and put her keys in.
"Do you think that’s what I’m only worried about?" he replied. "You weren’t answering your phone, so I thought it was more than just a small incident."
"I forgot my phone in the office. Anyway, thanks for your concern, but I’m okay."
This time, silence was the only thing she heard.
"I’m a little tired. I’ll hang up now." She waited for a moment for him to answer out of politeness, but when he didn’t, she said one last bye before ending the call.
Fil threw her bag on the couch as she went straight to the kitchen for a glass of water. She didn’t know why, but for some reason, she felt a little dehydrated. She chugged the whole glass down.
"I was on the road for half a day and barely did work, but I feel extra tired."
Dragging herself to the couch, Fil slumped on it. It’s been a while since she felt this tired; it reminded her of her usual exhaustion back when she was still Vincent’s and his friend’s dog. She lay on the couch, feeling her eyes grow heavy.
Before she could fall asleep, the loud vibration on the coffee table earned her attention. She didn’t want to check it, but it could be Jackson. Hence, she lazily sprawled her arms for her phone and checked who it was. A smile turned up on her face as she excitedly answered the call.
"Hey there," she greeted with a smile. "How’s your day?"
Jackson didn’t answer immediately. "You sound tired."
"How did you know that?"
"Your voice."
"Couldn’t it be other things other than tired?"
"If you were sad, you would’ve tried to sound a lot livelier not to worry me," he explained, making her chuckle. "Did those guys bother you again?"
"They did, but I can handle it." Fil closed her eyes.
"You didn’t kick them in the nuts?"
"If I did that, then I would have to feel another man’s privates," she humored as she rolled to her side. "I feel tired today and I don’t know why."
"Did something happen?"
"Mhm. Kenzo and I got into a minor accident on our way to the site."
"Are you okay?"
"You wouldn’t be talking to me if I wasn’t." She slowly opened her eyes. "We hit someone, and it’s the scariest thing that happened to me so far. I can still hear the sound of the collision it made. It was the scariest thing I have ever heard."
This made her wonder just how could a human being kill another. They almost killed a person and although she knew it wasn’t their fault, she could imagine the guilt and conscience that would haunt her for the rest of her life.
"I’m going back," Jackson announced quietly, causing lines on her forehead to appear. "I’ll be there first thing in the morning."
"Jack, wait." Fil panicked. "Didn’t you say you have work to do? Why are you going back so soon? Don’t tell me you finished your work in just two days?"
"I don’t like the tone you had," he said. "I’ll see you tomorrow."
Fil smiled, feeling her heart warm up at his concerns. "Jack, do you know how many people called me today?"
"Hmm?"
"I forgot my phone in the office, but even after all the missed calls, people still kept ringing my phone," she shared, eyes softening. "They all had one question, and I know they were genuinely concerned about me. They were worried and wanted to make sure I was fine."
"I understood their concerns and appreciate their gestures. But I can’t deny that their questions and having to repeat myself over and over is exhausting. What I’m saying is, I have to reassure them it didn’t affect me at all to convince them I am fine. With you, I can freely express myself and speak from weakness, knowing you won’t judge me but cheer me on."
"Coming to see you isn’t cheering you on?"
"No, but I don’t want our relationship to get in between our work." She pressed her lips. "I told you that."
Jackson let out a deep exhale, cupping his face. "But I want to see you not because you need me, but because I just want to."
"Hehe. You missed me?"
"You have no idea."
"I think I do." A mischievous grin appeared on her face. "Because if I missed you, you’d miss me three times more."
"Three?" Jackson sneered. "Bold of you to assume it’s just three times, not a hundred times. No. A thousand times."
Fil giggled. "Ahh... my fiance is healing me~! What a nice thing to have."
"And you’re damaging me more, you vile, cruel woman." Jackson shook his head, feeling a little dejected. When her mischievous giggles subsided, his expression turned solemn. "Filomena." freeweɓnovel.cѳm
"Yes?"
Again, Jackson didn’t speak. He took his time to say what he wanted to say and Fil didn’t urge him. Instead, she went quiet and waited patiently for whatever he would tell her.
"I have a plan which I hadn’t told you yet," he said, making her furrow her brows at the tone of his voice.
She asked. "What is it? Jack, you’re scaring me with your tone. Did something happen?"
"After this... I’m thinking of retiring. No, actually, I’m already planning to."
