Chapter 217: Cold as ice

The site visit went smoothly with Fil and Kenzo getting along with the people on the site. The materials were also of high quality, just as Vincent promised. Since there wasn’t a problem, Kenzo and Fil briefly stayed to check other areas and observe the construction, giving out their professional assistance and what they needed.

Despite that, Fil couldn’t help but notice how strange Kenzo had been acting the entire time. His complexion was also not good. Hence, she insisted on driving on their way back.

"Are you okay?" she asked from the driver’s seat, glancing to her side where Kenzo was.

He had his eyes closed, hugging himself to stop his shivers. "Yeah. Just... a little dizzy."

"Should I take you to the clinic?"

"Nah. I just need to rest." Kenzo moved to his side, his back facing hers. "I feel like I’m gonna throw up or something."

"You didn’t drink last night, did you?" she asked, but this time, he didn’t answer.

Respecting his wishes to rest, Fil kept quiet and drove themselves back to the city. When they were almost in the city, she quietly called Olivia and told her about Kenzo.

"He said he probably needs a little rest," she whispered, glancing at Kenzo’s back. "Mhm. I’ll drive him back to his place first. No. I’ll drop by the office after this. The site visit ended earlier than expected, so I want to finish the report tonight."

After Olivia agreed, Fil hung up. She glanced at Kenzo once more, growing worried as the man hadn’t moved since he turned his back on her. However, she didn’t want to panic, so she stayed quiet throughout the ride, and soon enough, she reached Kenzo’s apartment without a hitch.

"Ken." Fil shook his shoulder mildly. "Ken, we’re at your place."

When he didn’t answer, she crawled out of the driver’s seat and went to the front passenger seat. Opening the door, deep lines appeared between her brows, seeing the paleness on his face.

"Ken." She bent down, wiping the sweat from his forehead.

It was cold as ice.

"Ken?" she panicked. "Oh, no."

Without thinking twice, Fil rushed back to the driver’s seat and drove to the nearest hospital. Was this the reason she woke up today with this inexplicable anxiety in her heart? Fil didn’t want to think about it and focused on getting Kenzo medical help.

"He is fine now, Miss Lovin." The doctor offered a meek, reassuring smile to Fil. "The patient had a low blood count, but he is going to be fine."

The doctor explained everything, so the patient’s guardian knew what to do. Fil listened to everything attentively, afraid she missed a single detail.

"We’ll have to keep him overnight to monitor his condition," said the attending. "Though we needed you to sign some paperwork at the nurse’s station."

"Sure, Doctor. I called his brother. He’ll settle the paperwork."

"Alright."

With that being said, the doctor left them to fulfill his other duties. Fil, on the other hand, sat on the chair beside the bed. Kenzo’s complexion looked better than earlier, probably because of the blood transfusion treatment.

"I’ve known you for a long time, but only this time had I seen you in the hospital more than once in a single year." A deep exhale slipped past her lips, worried sick for her friend.

There were only two times she saw Kenzo in a hospital. The first time was back in college during their last semester when he hadn’t slept for a few nights because he was studying. The second time was when he got beaten up by the vicious Marcus and the mysterious Michael. This was the third.

"Gosh..." she whispered. "You should’ve said you weren’t feeling well earlier, instead of forcing yourself."

This reminded her of how Kenzo studied so hard that he ended up in an emergency. Fil reached for his hand and squeezed it, sighing heavily one more time. After a while, she heard rushed footsteps from the door. Looking back, she smiled helplessly as soon as her eyes met with Cole’s, Kenzo’s brother.

"What happened?" Cole’s usual cool demeanor and stoic expression showed deep worry and concern.

"Anemia. The doctors said he had a low blood count. So, they had to give him blood," she explained, setting her eyes back to Kenzo. "They will keep him overnight to monitor him."

"This guy..." Cole clicked his tongue as he approached, standing opposite Fil’s direction. "What did he do this time? He’d be the death of me if he kept doing this to himself."

Fil pursed her lips. "The doctors said they needed some paperwork done."

"My assistant is already on it," he answered while keeping his eyes on Kenzo’s face, and then at the blood drip on the side. Seeing this, bitterness shone in his eyes.

"Thank you, Fil," he expressed after controlling his emotions. "Really appreciate it."

"There’s no need to thank me. Kenzo is my friend and my subordinate."

"I know, but I still have to thank you."

"Cole," she called. "Please scold him more once he wakes up. I know you already heard about yesterday’s incident. Kenzo was behind the wheel. If the accident affected me, who is only a passenger, I bet he had it worse. Though scolding him might be a little too much, he needed an earful."

"I thought you were going to ask me to cut him some slack."

"Had I ever asked you to do that?" she joked weakly. "Your little brother is so stubborn, after all."

Cole slowly smiled at her. "He is," he said as he sat down on the edge of the bed. "Very stubborn."

Staring at Cole, Fil felt reassured that someone who genuinely cared for Kenzo would stay with him. Cole truly cared for Kenzo and if there were someone whom she would go to regarding Kenzo, that would be him.

Fil stayed with Cole for a little while before she excused herself.

"Go home, Fil," said Cole as he watched her get up from her seat. "I already notified Olivia that you won’t be coming back to the office today."

Fil smiled. "Even if you didn’t, I already did. You know Liv, she would tell me to rest without anyone telling her."

"I guess I’m also in for an earful," Cole humored, making her smile stretch.

"I don’t think you’ll hear from her, but if Kenzo found out, he’ll not be pleased." Fil smacked her lips. "You should give Liv another call to silence her. Anyway, I’ll go now."

Her smile remained as she walked away. When she was by the door, she looked back at Cole and said, "Cole, I heard Liv is single again. Her last date failed miserably."

"Good for them," he remarked with a smile. "They dodged a bullet."

"A bullet named Cole?" she giggled, making him shake his head. "Anyway, don’t be too worried now. Kenzo will be fine, so take care of yourself too."

"You too, Filomena. Take care."

With that being said, Fil resumed her steps and closed the door behind her. As she stood outside, she looked back at the door and sighed.

’Cole is just as stubborn as his little brother,’ she thought, resuming in her steps to go home. When she reached the open parking space and noticed that it was nighttime, Fil stopped.

"Right," she muttered. "Quentin is staying in Kenzo’s place. I should let him know that he’s not coming home."
