Chapter 225: Thank you for the heads up

"Uh, Fil." Anton instinctively held Fil’s arm the second she stepped on the stairs to stop her. Fil looked back at him, curious.

"How about we grab something to eat first?" he said with an awkward laugh. "You said had to visit a few sites today. That’s why you were late. Are you sure partying is what you want to do right now? I mean, do you want to grab a coffee instead and catch up? Not just the two of us, but the three of us. I think it’s a good time to get to know Elise too."

Fil and Elise looked at each other before they both set their eyes back on him.

"Anton, is there’s something wrong?" Fil asked worriedly.

Anton forced a smile, holding himself back from telling her it wasn’t like there was something wrong... yet. However, once she goes to the second floor and sees what kind of party is happening, Anton can already see what is going to happen.

When Anton left the second floor, nothing huge was happening. At least his "friends" were not doing anything yet. But this was Michael’s party! Every second, things were developing fast. And by that, he meant Marianne and Vincent might let loose and get back together just for the heck of it.

’I know they’ve already broken up, but... if she sees that her best friend and ex-fiance together...’ Anton secretly clenched his teeth. ’She’ll still get hurt.’

A sense of guilt crept into Anton’s heart at the thought of knowing the truth and hiding it from Fil.

"Anton, this party is something Michael threw for me for my return and to celebrate our little friendship," Fil explained innocently. "I can’t just ditch him. I want to show my face to him first."

"Then, should we call him?"

She narrowed her eyes and asked suspiciously. "Anton, is there something you don’t want me to see on the second floor?"

"No. I mean..." Anton trailed off, trying to come up with a good and believable lie. But alas, as he locked gaze with her, all the lies he wanted to say rolled back to where they came from. In the end, he could only sport a helpless smile.

He couldn’t lie to her more than he had already done in the past. He couldn’t just stay on the sidelines like always and tell himself it was not his business.

"Anton, what is it?"

"I don’t want you to get hurt, Fil." He took a step on the stairs and lowered his head a little. "If you get in there, you might."

"What’s happening in there?"

"I can’t tell you."

"Anton."

"I can’t tell you because I’m not sure yet."

"But you think something’s already going there after you left?" she concluded, and he gave her a short nod. "Anton, I appreciate that you don’t want me to get hurt. I really do, but whatever it is, I don’t think it’s as bad as I think it is."

"You don’t understand."

"Then if it’s that bad, isn’t it just right for me to see it for myself?" Fil offered him a reassuring smile, peeling his hold from her arm. "Thank you for the heads up, Anton. I’ll just say hi to Michael and maybe the three of us can share a drink. As for the coffee, let’s arrange that some other day."

Her face brightened with a big smile, rendering Anton helpless and speechless. She urged him to follow her and hooked her arms around Elise. The latter seemed just as excited as Fil, "not" fully understanding Anton’s worry.

The closer they were to the second-floor VIP section, the more nervous Anton felt for Fil. All he could hope was that Marianne and Vincent kept their words earlier and that they wouldn’t sleep together again.

Anton should’ve known that these people were the type to succumb to temptation.

As the three arrived at the venue, the music was almost louder than the main dance floor downstairs. It was crowded, packed by people only Michael knew. Anton instinctively moved his gaze to where he last saw Vincent.

"Where’s Michael?" Fil murmured as she looked around the crowd, raising her brows when she caught Anton staring in a direction. She slowly followed where he was staring at with her gaze.

There, on the not-so-far-away corner table, was Vincent. On his lap was Marianne, her arms wrapped around his neck, his hands on her thigh while his fingers were carefully slipping inside the side slit of her skirt. Their lips were locked with each other and from where Fil was, she could even see their tongue intertwining every once in a while.

"Fil..." Elise’s quiet call snapped Anton back to his senses.

He turned his head to his side on instinct and, without thinking, he jumped right in front of her. Looking at the shocked look on her face, Anton slowly balled his hands into a tight fist.

"I’m sorry," he breathed out through his gritted teeth. "I’m... I’m sorry."

Fil didn’t move for the next several seconds before she slowly lifted her eyes to Anton. His eyes brimmed with guilt and regret. Even though he wouldn’t say it, one could read what he was thinking right at this second.

"Is this... what you are so afraid to tell me?" she asked quietly and despite the deafening music around, Anton heard her very clearly.

He didn’t answer. He couldn’t. But his silence was also an answer to her question.

"Thank you," she whispered as she forced a smile. "But if I didn’t see it, I wouldn’t know what’s been going on behind my back."

"You should be." Fil rocked her head. "You knew and yet, you didn’t say anything even when you had the chance."

"Fil."

"I can’t say it’s okay, Anton." Fil took a deep breath and huffed it out. "But I’d really appreciate it if you step aside."

"What are you going to do?"

"Are you afraid I’d become hysterical?"

"That’s not what I meant —"

"Step aside, you jerk," Elise stepped forward to their side. "Even if she goes hysterical, she has all the reason to. If you really care for her, then move."

Anton glanced at Elise, pressing his lips together. He rocked his head and reluctantly stepped aside, watching Fil and Elise approach the table where Vincent and Marianne were. He wasn’t afraid that Fil would create a scene, but rather, he was just worried how this would gonna turn out. Hence, since this came down to this, Anton followed suit.

Much to his surprise, Fil and Elise went on their separate ways. Elise went to the other table where Marcus and a woman were. Although they didn’t look as intimate as Marianne and Vincent, it was obvious that’s where it was going to go.
