The Devil's Good Girl-Chapter 291: Fool
Chapter 291: Fool
"His Highness... or rather, His Majesty wants to tell you something. He said you’ve been a good and loyal servant, so... he’ll let you die with honor."
Die with honor.
Even in this era where wars were a frequent problem solver for any dispute, Jackson had never understood where that idea came from.
Was there honor in death?
After being on the battlefield all his life, he had never seen anyone die with honor. Die with pride, perhaps. Die while fighting for what they believe, die fighting to protect their people and their land.
Only those who hadn’t stepped on the battlefield would say honor at the mention of war and death. It was simply a way to encourage or motivate anyone to fight for them so they could keep enjoying their lives in their palace and mansions.
Despite the unknown creatures who acted and talked like men and despite the dreadful news of the crown prince’s malevolent plans, Jackson fought bravely with everything he had. The crown prince had forsaken them, but all these soldiers were still fighting. Hence, Jackson didn’t think and simply held onto his sword and fought.
No matter how many times he would get slashed and no matter how much blood he had spilled, he would keep standing up again and again. He would fall, but rise to the point even the monsters who came to take him down couldn’t help but wonder:
Who was the real monster here?
Jackson took down three vampires despite his physical and mental condition. However, when he lifted his eyes, there were still two of them.
"Two more..." he muttered under his breath, clinging to his sword that was plunged into the ground for assistance.
He straightened his back, but all the wounds — old and new— squirted with blood. He winced in pain and endured the pain.
There were only two monsters he had to take down.
Jackson’s blurry vision veered to his surroundings. His men were still fighting some small numbers of their enemies. However, their numbers had already slimmed.
"What a monster," said one of the vampires as his face contorted.
There was already a hole in Jackson’s stomach, yet he was still standing up — he was still conscious! This was impossible. They were almost frightened by him as he was too stubborn. Not to mention, he was able to take down three vampires in that state.
They didn’t want to imagine what could’ve happened if Jackson was in his best state.
"Two more —" Just as Jackson’s whispers slipped past his lips, the remaining vampires lunged at him at once.
He swung his sword to deflect the attack. The vampires were pushed back, but they would leap back to him one second after their feet landed on the ground. Despite that, Jackson fought them just as fiercely, letting his last surge of adrenaline control his body.
When he was able to push them back again, a roar suddenly erupted in the air.
"Huh?" Jackson lifted his weary eyes, only to see flags and another battalion marching on the border.
His vision was already too blurry, but he could feel the overwhelming energy of soldiers who wanted to fight. Even the soldiers who were still fighting couldn’t help but look at the masses marching toward the border.
The sight of it made their hearts sink.
Compared to the numbers that were approaching, there were only less than a hundred of them. Not to mention, those monsters were ganging up on Jackson. Although Jackson managed to take down three of them, they knew the duke was at his limits.
"Pfft —" one of the vampires chuckled and taking advantage of this, he appeared behind Jackson.
A short sound escaped Jackson as his breath hitched. He winced and when he faced down, he saw a hand holding his heart out of his chest.
"Your Grace, it’s over."
That was all Jackson heard before the vampire pulled out his heart. As soon as he did, Jackson remained standing for a few seconds before he fell on his back.
The vampires took a few steps back, eyes on him. They had been overflowing with energy and this overwhelming strength that all they wanted to do was fight to quench the itch. But after fighting with him, the two remaining vampires were exhausted.
"He’s still alive?" one of the vampires almost gasped in disbelief, watching Jackson move his eyes up to them. "Without a heart?"
"He’s really a mad dog, just as His Highness said," the other one spat out. "He’s going to die anyway. Holding on to life will only prolong his suffering, but without a heart, he’s gone."
The other one nodded in agreement before the two of them talked about what to do next. They pondered whether they should end the rest or leave it for the incoming enemy.
Meanwhile, Jackson kept his gaze on them. The longer he stared, the blurrier his vision was. He couldn’t even hear what they were talking about. However, he still saw them turn their backs on them to leave.
"You can’t..." Jackson reached out for the vampire’s ankle.
The vampire stopped and looked back at him.
"What an annoying animal," said the vampire and kicked his hand away. "Tsk. His Highness should reward us with something more."
As the two vampires turned their backs on him to continue, they flinched when a figure was standing in front of them. The person was wearing a cloak, so they couldn’t tell who it was. But with the person’s height and physique, they knew this person was rather smaller.
"Deal with him —" one of the vampires was about to tell the other to deal with the person who appeared. But before he could finish, his body fell apart to six pieces.
The other vampire jumped away in surprise, "Who... who are you?" he stuttered, only to suddenly sense this suffocating aura coming from the person wearing the cloak. His eyes slowly dilated, gazing up at the black aura exuding from the person and reaching up to the sky.
As a prisoner of the empire turned into an otherworldly creature, he could see what normal people couldn’t. Hence, he knew whoever this person was, he was no match.
"Fool..."
When the person wearing the cloak spoke, the vampire’s eyes dilated in surprise. It was a woman. But before he could even start to wonder, he shared the same fate as the other one.
