Chapter 84: me? a spy?

Ursula was at a loss for words.

There was not a chance in Hell that this was real. ’Truly, the queen must be out her mind’ Ursula thought to herself.

"I’m sorry, I think I spaced out, and misunderstood, could you repeat yourself once more?" Ursula wasn’t convinced she heard her correctly.

"No, child, you heard correct. I need ears close enough to know what they’re planning. My husband, the king, has been acting oddly secretive and he’s spent an unusual amount of time with his uncle; they’ve never been close, and in fact at one point even fought over the throne. As you can see my husband won." She peeked around and said more quietly, "I’ve also never seen so many soldiers at the welcoming before, doesn’t that seem a bit strange to you?"

Ursula didn’t know what to expect, she only met the royal family once sand that’s when she was a toddler and her father the beta of the BlackBay pack had a different relationship with the Alpha King, so she wouldn’t know the difference.

"I don’t know if I can, they don’t let me around when they talk about anything of the sort. And... Well... Beta Atlas isn’t the most caring of betrotheds and doesn’t consider me an equal." Ursula whispered back.

Thinking about the fact she’d be married to a demon angered and terrified her all at the same time. She wasn’t inferior to him. Her wolf was bigger than his. She might not be as strong or heal as fast or run as far as Atlas, but she wasn’t small or weak by any means. If her wolf and his went toe to toe, she wouldn’t lose to him easily if you compare them on sheer power.

"I don’t need you to sneak around or risk your life; just, please, keep an ear out and if you hear anything please reach out to me." Luna Selene stated as she took out her phone and handed it to Ursula.

"Please put your number in here." The Luna asked, "This phone number is a secure line, so no one can listen to our calls even from your end."

Ursula really couldn’t believe this was happening. She was about to be a spy for her Luna Queen.

"I fear something will be happening soon. The Gala is this coming weekend, if anything is going to happen it will be then." The queen mentioned.

"If I hear anything at all, I’ll message you." Ursula said confirming her willingness to participate.

They continued to walk through the garden, this was the most normal moment she’s had here since she arrived, school was the only place she was seen and felt like more than a just some pretty decoration.

Luna Selene just went on about the life at court, what it meant to be married. All of things she feared and had no one to really talk to about. Her mother was useless when it came to conversations like these, she was much more focused on being with her ’mate’. She only took her because her mother convinced her father that she would find happiness with the beta’s son, and that she’d go to the best school in the country for night citizens.

Her stupid father...

But now matter how stupid her father was, and for all his faults, she missed him. She missed home. Luna Selene reminded her of that, of when her family was whole, when her mom cared.

Ursula’s chest felt an ache deep inside, one she continued to shove downward and pretend didn’t exist.

However, Luna Selene noticed the slight change in her demeanor and asked "You miss home don’t you?"

"Yes, almost too much." Ursula answered honestly in a hushed tone. Almost as if admitting it too loudly would make it worse.

Luna Selene nodded and continued on, but changing the subject to animals, after walking for a while it was getting dark, and they were getting hungry.

"Shall we head in, I’m sure our company might have noticed how long we’ve been gone and frankly I’m famished."

"I’m feeling pretty hungry too, let’s go." Ursula answered in agreement.

Heading back inside and making their way to the dining hall. They noticed not every seat was filled.

The Alpha King and Beta Kane, Alpha Micheal and Beta Atlas where all still missing from the table.

Ursula watched as Luna Selene’s face drop instantly, her once pleasant expression darkened.

She hated Alpha Micheal, she hated when her mate and him got together, it was always trouble. Trouble that would cause everyone else havoc to deal with and a mess to clean up.

Her Mate Alpha King Cyrus was more balanced and levelheaded. Micheal was unhinged, diabolical, a truly terrifying beast.

It was Cyrus that kept him in line, kept him from going completely mad. And his beta Atlas, wasn’t much better. He was a sadist. Enjoyed watching as he broke his victims.

Cyrus’ beta Kane was the most normal of the three, he kept the three of them from making bigger messes of things.

So, Luna Selene knew there was trouble brewing.

"I’m going to kill him" She mouthed to Ursula.

"I’m sorry." Ursula mouthed back.

With Omega’s surrounded them, shifters had a beauty all their own. It was rougher and more hardened. Whereas vampires had a sharp and deathly beauty to them. Vampires brought the cold, and wolf shifters brought warmth. But sometimes that warmth could burn, and the two of them knew a wildfire was just waiting to ignite.

Both Ursula composed themselves, acting unbothered by their absence, they took their seats and were brought their plates of food.

Infront of them sat a large fresh venison steak with asparagus and baked potato. Luna Selene rolled her eyes; she knew her husband told the kitchen staff that she loved potatoes. It was rare to have those served to nobility, it was lower class food. But Selene grew up poor, it was her mate bond that brought her to Cyrus, made her a Queen, made her his Luna. She had exceptional beauty, it wasn’t just the bond that captured Cyrus’ heart, it was love at first sight.

Ursula had no mate bond with Atlas, it was strictly a political move made by her mother. A mate bond would be the only thing that could save her from this horrible fate with Atlas.

Many of the wolves at this table were jealous of her, but they had no idea the kind of wolf Atlas was, every time she ate with the female omegas, their stares drilled holes into her, but she kept looking forward, she was a beta herself, and the daughter of a beta, she was above their station, she was bigger and more powerful, it would take two-three of them to take her down. Ursula was a fierce wolf, if they only knew how Atlas had broken her. How he had made her complacent, the stubborn spirited girl that she once was, is gone, the old her would have devoured those wolves during training, but who she was now, she wouldn’t dare draw attention to herself. The less Atlas saw her the better. freёwebnoѵel.com

She pitied any wolf that would have a mate bond with him. Mate bonds weren’t as common as they used to be, some could even be formed instead of a natural blessing from the moon goddess.

Ursula noticed Prince Ambrose sitting with Amos, who looked annoyed with the young prince. Seeing Amos so pained lightened Ursula’s mood, putting her at ease just a little more.

Halfway through the meal the missing wolves burst through the door in good spirits. Ursula looked from the wolves at the door back to her queen, she saw the anger etched on her face. Ursula knew it was only seconds before the queen flipped the table with how much her anger looked to be boiling.

And just as she finished the thought Luna Selene stood up slamming her hands on the table, rattling the plates and table wear, the sound of the slap echoed in the dinning chamber as silence spread through the room.

"What the hell Cyrus?" Queen Luna Selene yelled at her king, "You dare stand me up for dinner in public?"

Ursula knew this wasn’t the only reason for the queen’s rage, her gaze shifting over to Atlas for a moment when she caught him starring hard at her with an evil and sinister grin.

His smile made her skin crawl, and everything inside her told her to bolt toward the door, but her fear rooted her to the floor. He would come sit next to her, and he would come to her tonight. She knew the wine he carried meant for her.

She gulped, at least the wine made it bearable. Without it, Ursula didn’t know how she’d be able to live anymore.

The king just smiled at his queen and approached her with an aura the commanded every eye in the room, his sheer power was enough to make most quiver in his presence. But he stood not as a king to his queen, but as a man to his wife. He bent down on one knee, "My love, my darling wife, my moon and stars, please forgive me." He kisses her hand delicately, every move deliberate.

He knew how to melt her heart. And without fail it worked, her expression softened as she pulled her husband to his feet.

She plants a strong and passionate kiss on his lips and says "You do it again and you’ll sleep on the couch."
