Chapter 193: New friend (1)

"Why did the queen do this? With so many women we don’t know?"

"This is going to be a painful day," a young woman named Eleanor sighed. She had no idea why the queen would send her an invitation seeing as they never spoke to each other in the past. Furthermore, Eleanor didn’t think the queen knew that she existed.

Eleanor sat at a table with other young women who were confused as to why they received an invitation. They weren’t from noble families. Well, Eleanor would say that about herself because of her parents’ business.

Eleanor’s parents ran a business in the red light district where girls sold their bodies. She was often left to the side because no one wanted to be near her for fear that the red light district would be attached to them.

So, why did the queen invite her here? Was it some sort of joke? Something the other young ladies like the queen could laugh about? The party was already divided with one set of girls sitting on one side, speaking of dresses and balls, while the other side was quiet.

If not for Eleanor’s aunt trying hard to get her away from the red light district and help her get married, Eleanor would not be seated here today. It wasn’t like these women would want to be her friend.

"The queen has arrived."

Hazel entered the room she had carefully decorated for this occasion. At first glance, it seemed like all the guests were present. Women of her age who were either already married or still looking to wed were present today. There were a few that would have to wait another year to marry.

"I’m sorry for being a little late," Hazel apologised as she made her way to her seat.

She could be as late as she wanted to be but Hazel preferred to apologise for being a little behind the time she planned to be here. Hazel wanted to greet them before they found their seats and then get the party going.

"You are hardly late my queen," Linda said, standing to greet Hazel. "We were all too early."

"Is that so? Then I don’t need to think about it too much. You may sit," Hazel said as everyone stood to welcome her. "I thank you all for coming here for my first gathering. I hope that you will all become close and visit the palace again."

Hazel was sitting at a table with only Linda at the moment. Helena’s chair was empty as the Wallace sisters seemed to be in sync with not being on time. There were other chairs empty for Hazel to welcome some women to sit with her throughout the party.

"Do you already know who you want to sit with us?" Linda questioned, trying to ignore the stares their way because the women were eager to speak with Hazel.

"Not yet. I must watch and wait before inviting someone here. Why do they look so divided? Did I make a mistake of letting them sit where they wanted?" Hazel questioned as the division was evident.

She could point out where the daughters of nobles were and those who were new to the palace. The group would not mix unless she intervened and changed around the seating.

"Perhaps we should change up the seating a little bit so we can all make new friends. I shall personally pick who sits where. Excuse me," Hazel said, standing up to do it.

This idea was going to work regardless of who didn’t like it. It was time that these ladies got along with each other.

"If I may, Your Majesty. We’re all comfortable where we are now. I didn’t know we were coming here to make friends with others. I overheard some of the girls being afraid of one of your guests. I don’t think you know what her father does," Sophia West said, looking in Eleanor’s direction.

"He does no more than your husband does," Eleanor replied.

How long would it take for them to learn that telling her about her father’s business would not have her crying? Eleanor knew how to throw jabs too and seeing that she spent a lot of time with the girls in the brothels, Eleanor knew a lot about the men in town.

Sophia did not want to go against her when Eleanor knew the tricks Sophia had to use to get her husband or to seduce men before him.

"I wasn’t speaking of you, Eleanor. You must be guilty about something to be so quick to speak up," Sophia said, earning a few women nodding their heads in agreement.

"You were looking my way. Do not speak on me or I shall speak on why you weren’t fit to wear a white wedding dress," Eleanor said, finding pleasure in Sophia’s face turning red. "I was going to sit here quietly so allow me to do that."

’I forgot how drama-filled these parties are,’ Hazel realised.

The selection had nothing on this moment. What was it about putting so many women in one room that always led to this happening? How many minutes had gone by before it became this heated? freёnovelkiss.com

Hazel was well aware of the families of those she invited here today. Eleanor was just as welcomed as Sophia was so what her parents did for work didn’t need to be brought up now. Hazel didn’t need Eleanor to tell her the things Sophia had done to be able to wed a man working in the palace.

Hazel invited Sophia here with the hope that Sophia might find friends who would ignore what was being said about her and it would be nice to have a wife of a man working in the court as a friend but that was not going to happen.

"This does not need to go on any further. If all of you want to stay as you are, then you are free to do so. Eleanor, please come sit with me so I can get to know you better," Hazel said and then turned to return to her seat before another argument could start.

If others wanted to converse with her, they would need to do a little more mingling and not look down on others.

Eleanor was surprised to hear the queen was now calling for her to sit with her. First the invitation and now this. Eleanor preferred to stay in a corner but seeing how upset the other women were, she stood up to follow the queen. This very moment would make an excellent scene in the book she was writing.
