Chapter 200: Dead maid (6)

"I don’t believe that Lynn left me to go have a drink. It isn’t like her. She was so eager to stay here so what would have made her drink something? I just can’t bring myself to stop thinking that someone hurt her and I couldn’t protect her," Hazel said, still filled with guilt.

After crying over Lynn’s death, Hazel calmed down and rested her head on Tobias’s lap. She was no longer tired enough to want to sleep as her mind was filled with thoughts about who would have hurt Lynn.

It was hard to come to terms with the fact that Lynn was dead. As Tobias said, he would not joke about something like this to her and it was best for her sanity that she did not go to see how Lynn was found. It might haunt her for the rest of her life.

"She’s my maid but what has she done to anyone? What had I done to anyone for them to target her?" Hazel wondered.

"You weren’t with her all the time so you don’t know who she had conflict with. I agree that it is a little odd she would leave you to have a drink. I could understand if more of your maids were present and they saw the accident," Tobias said, continuing to rake his fingers through her hair as he found that it calmed her.

"I should have just let her stay here with me. She was willing to stay and I sent her off. I know I can’t think it is my fault but I can’t stop thinking that if I had welcomed her to stay she would still be alive. I should have-"

"You didn’t know that someone was going to harm her, Hazel. There was nothing you could have done to prevent it. If someone were plotting to kill her, if they failed today they would have tried another day and you wouldn’t have been able to save her unless you were suspicious of anyone," said Tobias.

"Then, what is the point of being a queen when I am so powerless? I couldn’t even protect someone close to me. Whoever harmed her didn’t fear what I might do. Maybe I wasn’t the best choice," Hazel said, closing her eyes.

"You were the only choice, Hazel. If not for you the palace would have been without a king as I might have been trying to convince anyone to run far away from here with me. You’re a good queen. You just need time to grow your influence here in the palace and I will help you," Tobias offered.

"You are too busy to help me and you have your problems. Would it be so bad if I stayed in with the other maids after breakfast? Would I make myself look guilty of something?" Hazel asked as she didn’t want to speak to anyone who might have done something to Lynn.

"You can stay here if you want. I will put my work on hold and stay here with you. I can have your maids use rooms nearby so you know where they are. We should have them move closer now. I will order it first thing in the morning," Tobias said.

"Thank you. I don’t know how many will want to stay with me after this incident. They’ll see the reality of what it is like to be by my side and I will let them leave their duty if they want. You must be tired," Hazel said, sitting up to face Tobias.

He had been working all day and yet he was still here trying to comfort her.

"I am not tired. I will sleep only when you sleep so don’t suggest that I rest if you will not," Tobias answered before she could propose to him going to bed first.

Tobias was not going to sleep until Hazel was fast asleep and could not sneak out to look at the mess which needed to be cleaned up.

"You spoke to Kenneth about leaving the palace, didn’t you? Why don’t you send him a letter about doing that tomorrow?" Tobias suggested.

"That will look as though I am running from what happened. At least if I stay in my room, I can be easily called upon to be questioned. Do you think...no," Hazel changed her mind.

Hazel had the sudden thought that Tabitha might have something to do with Lynn. Tabitha couldn’t be pleased that Hazel had picked maids to her liking not to what Tabitha wanted and it would be revenge for slapping Tabitha’s maid.

At this point, Hazel wouldn’t put anything past Tabitha. She was only keeping quiet now to not have Tobias thinking his mother was behind this when she didn’t have any proof.

"I want to take care of her funeral. It’s the least I can do after all that she did for me. I don’t know how I could look her family in the eye should I ever meet them. Forgive me if I wet your clothes," Hazel said as the need to cry returned. "I don’t want morning to come too fast."

Hazel had to keep her other maids safe while trying to find out who had hurt Lynn. If there was someone plotting to hurt Lynn and it wasn’t an accident, Hazel couldn’t let the person behind it get away. frёewebnoѵēl.com

"It is time for you to go to sleep. You’ve cried your eyes out and now your face is a little warm," Tobias said, touching her face with the back of his hand. He feared that Hazel would somehow become sick.

"Fine. Thank you," Hazel said as she laid back on Tobias’s lap.

"I didn’t do anything," Tobias replied. At the moment, he didn’t know who was with Lynn yet or whether they were overthinking an accident.

"You rushed here to see me and tell me. Try all you want but I can see that you are tired yet you came here. Thank you," Hazel said again.

Hazel closed her eyes to try going to sleep so Tobias would no longer worry about her and get the rest that he needed. Whoever had killed Lynn succeeded in ruining the first gathering she had with women as whenever Hazel thought of her first party she would be saddened by the memory of Lynn dying today.

Hazel tried to focus on Tobias’s hand going through her hair so that she could fall asleep. She wanted to speak to the other maids alone first thing in the morning, but then Hazel also wanted to seek an audience with Tabitha.

’I don’t trust her,’ Hazel thought. It was unfortunate that Hazel wouldn’t put it past Tabitha to go so low.

Then, it also scared Hazel that she couldn’t think of who would want to harm her or anyone close to her. The men in the court were a headache but other than speaking of an heir they were bothering Tobias instead.

Hazel never held a long conversation with anyone to get the feeling they hated her so she was left in the dark about who didn’t like her as queen. Hazel hoped she was wrong about someone killing Lynn because not knowing who the person behind this was greatly scared her.
