Chapter 52: Gift (2)

Hazel closed her door before anyone snooping around, following the guard saw her standing there with flowers in her hands. She didn’t want to explain why a guard was at her door or why the prince had sent her flowers.

Hazel couldn’t answer why Tobias sent them if asked because she had told him that she was fine with the punishment. Did he think that she was inside being sad that she was the only one left behind?

If he could see her view of the garden, he would know that she was enjoying her night so far. Well, until this interruption.

"They are from the garden," Hazel realised, tapping each flower she passed by when she had walked around with Tobias the first time.

They were all the flowers she thought stood out the most. ƒгeewёbnovel.com

"So he was listening. What now," Hazel said, taking a card out from the flowers. "If you are lonely and missing me, I sent these flowers to cheer you up while I am away. Don’t worry about missing out on anything special because, like you, I am also alone right now."

Hazel read the card out loud again, trying to understand the last part. How was the prince alone when he was with the others?

"Oh no," Hazel said, finally putting together what happened. "Please let it be that I guessed wrong. There is no way he is not in the palace. He’s not so crazy to do that," Hazel said, starting to walk back and forth in her room as she thought about what else it could mean.

Unfortunately, she wouldn’t put it past Tobias to leave the palace. It was a sweet gesture but it would cause a lot of trouble and soon.

There will be a lot said about their missing presence tonight and she imagined that the queen wouldn’t be pleased. Somehow Hazel saw Tobias leaving would be put on her when it had absolutely nothing to do with her.

Hazel didn’t have much faith in her peers to think before they spoke, but she expected the queen to see that this was not her fault.

"It feels like this will be a long night. You need water," Hazel said to the flowers.

Luckily, she had a jug with a little bit of water she had yet to finish. Hazel placed the flowers in the water and took out the card she had to hide.

"It is risky to throw it away," she said, thinking the maids might snoop around. It was best to hide it in one of her books.

Hazel lifted the jug out to the balcony to keep it out there instead of inside her room so she wouldn’t have to answer why she picked flowers from the garden without permission. She could also avoid having to explain anything about the flowers and where they came from if she hid them outside.

"You can see all your old friends from here," Hazel said as she placed the jug down in the corner. No one would see it easily unless they were snooping around her room. "Where did the prince run off to after picking you? Is he hiding in the palace? Was he the one to pick you or did he get a servant to do it?"

Hazel sat back down and wrapped the blanket around her. "Where did he run off to?" She asked herself, looking out at the other side of the palace.

While Hazel thought about where the prince was, Tabitha shared her curiosity. There was nothing more embarrassing than standing around waiting for her son to show up and no one knew where he was.

She stood without explaining to the women how much longer it would be for the prince to arrive and the women didn’t ask any questions. Everyone stood silent waiting for the guards to arrive with the prince.

Tobias was so late that Tabitha didn’t want to continue with the event for the night at this point. She was consumed by anger and couldn’t shake the thought of where her son was. It was no coincidence that on the night Hazel was to stay in her room, Tobias was nowhere in sight.

Tabitha wanted to go over to where Hazel was and see for herself whether Tobias was there or not. She couldn’t because it would only lead to others having the same thought as her and it would be odd for the queen to go to Hazel.

"It seems the prince might not be feeling well. My apologies for getting you all dressed up and having to send you off without seeing my son. I have a lovely dinner prepared for all of you. I hope you enjoy it. Excuse me," Tabitha said and then proceeded to leave the women.

She couldn’t stand here any longer when she left this way. Tabitha had to find her son now and ask him if he had lost his mind to be this way when it was already stated that he would be here. Not only did this make her look foolish, but it also affected everyone else including Tobias.

"Tell them to not rest until the prince is found and standing before me. Go!" Tabitha ordered one of her maids. She would not rest tonight until she had Tobias standing before her.

Instead of going to her bedroom, Tabitha was going in search of her husband who had to listen to why she needed his help to get their son under control. Jeffrey should know better than to let this incident slide.

"Send a maid to Hazel’s bedroom to check that she is not breaking what I ordered her to do. Report to me anything strange that you see," Tabitha gave another order.

This was all she could do to check if her son was around Hazel. She wouldn’t put it past him to go to Hazel to get back at her for the punishment. Tobias could not meddle in what she did with the women in the selection. It was up to her alone to punish them as she saw fit and this time, she had gone easy on Hazel because it was a small matter.

Two of the maids hurried off to do as the queen wanted.

Tabitha made her way over to the princess’s wing of the palace where Jeffrey should be at this time because they were to have dinner. She couldn’t let her daughter witness her anger toward Tobias so she had to pull Jeffrey to the side in a quiet corner to let out her frustration and hopefully be comforted this time with what she was dealing with.

She needed someone to start understanding the pressure that was on her just as it was on Jeffrey. Tabitha wanted to enjoy her life when her time as queen came to an end and not listen to complaints about the new queen. She had to be tough for the sake of the kingdom.

Tabitha had her favourite, but then she started to lean toward Hazel to please Tobias and already there was a need to punish Hazel. It gave her all the more reason to stick to the women she liked instead of following Tobias who was hardly ever serious.

Tabitha could not wait to find a quiet room with a pillow for her to scream into. The bottle Jeffrey had offered last night seemed tempting now.
