The Monster King's Legacy-Chapter 213: The Earth Trembles
It is always a given that peace does not last forever, after all, the world is not a paradise of beds of roses.
Far across the continent, chaos unfolded as massive earthquakes shook the lands, splitting mountains and consuming towns and cities. Violent storms tore through the skies, leveling forests and flooding villages, even towns. The natural world seemed to rebel, and kingdoms that had stood for centuries…
Even with all the chaos and destruction, in the monster capital, the air was calm. No tremors shook the ground, and no storms darkened the skies. Life went on as normal, the bustling streets and distant laughter of children a stark contrast to the catastrophe unfolding beyond their borders.
They had developed even further, expanding the capital city to the outside walls, building a secondary layer and a second wall, to accommodate the growing population. With the alliance with other races, the monster capital had become a place of opportunities for the poor and those without a home.
That that moment, Lance stood at the balcony of his palace, overlooking the thriving city below. Yet, despite the serene view, a sense of unease gnawed at him.
Aelyndra, seated nearby with a book in hand, filled with her own writings, glanced up. "What's bothering you?"
"Nothing specific," Lance admitted. "But I've learned to trust my instincts. When things seem too peaceful, it's usually because something is brewing."
"Really?" Aelyndra said, more sarcastic than serious.
"Haha, perhaps, I'm just not used to the peace yet… even though I sought it the most." Lance said, the last part for to himself than anyone.
Their conversation was interrupted as Rynne entered the room, her expression serious. "Lance, we've received reports from the outer regions. Something's happening, something big."
'Hah… perhaps I have a knack for fortune telling?' Lance thought to himself, following her as Aelyndra tagged along.
.
In the designated meeting room, Lance and his council gathered as scouts and messengers relayed their reports.
"Earthquakes have devastated the western dwarven kingdoms," one scout said. "Entire mountain ranges have collapsed. They're calling it the worst disaster in their history."
A goblin scout stepped forward, his voice trembling. "But that's not the worst of it. There are… things. Giants. Monsters bigger than anything we've ever seen. They're coming out of the ground, destroying everything in their path."
The room fell silent.
'Why's he so scared? Did he witness it himself?' Lance thought to himself.
"Giants?" Rynne repeated, her brow furrowing. "You mean like trolls? No one has sited those creatures for centuries, right?"
The scout shook his head. "No. These are bigger. Much bigger. They're as tall as mountains, and nothing seems to stop them. They're tearing through entire towns and cities."
They continued explaining bringing clarity to the situation at hand. The first reports were scattered, almost too fantastical to believe. Gigantic beings, some as tall as mountains, were said to have emerged from deep within the earth, shattering mountains in their wake. Others were seen descending from the sky.
There was even news from the west, of a great being that rose from the desert, its every step creating dunes that could swallow castles and bury entire cities.
The devastation wasn't confined to land either, as those living close to the coasts that had managed to survive, spoke of seeing colossal figures rising from the ocean depths, their forms blotting out the sun even though they were kilometres away, as they unleashed tidal waves that consumed their entire village, and possibly the nearby city.
Lance's expression darkened as he leaned back in his chair. Aelyndra, sitting beside him, exchanged a knowing look with him.
"It's them, isn't it?" Aelyndra said softly.
Lance nodded. "The Titans."
Rynne's eyes widened. "The ones Aelynder's mother warned us about?"
"Exactly," Lance replied, his tone grave. "Primordial beings of unimaginable power. If they've truly awakened, then this is only the beginning."
Aelyndra's gaze turned toward the window, her golden eyes distant. "If my mother was right, then I don't believe the world is ready for this."
"It's a threat that could end the world, that means…" While the meeting was on, a shadow passed over the capital. The people looked up in awe and fear as a dragon descended from the sky, one they had never seen before, its massive wings creating gusts that sent dust and debris flying.
The dragon landed gracefully in the main square, its shimmering scales glinting in the light. Its presence commanded silence as it folded its wings and stepped forward.
"I bring a message from the Dragon Elders," the dragon announced, its deep voice resonating across the square. "The Titans have awakened."
Lance's expression hardened as he stepped forward to meet the dragon. "It's true, huh?"
The dragon inclined its head. "Lance, its good to see you. The titans, the seals have weakened, and now they walk the world once more."
Aelyndra's expression turned grim. "How many?"
"Too many," the dragon replied, its voice heavy. "Already, they have destroyed several kingdoms, and that is within our continent alone. The Dragon Elders have sent me to warn you: the Titans cannot be stopped by ordinary means. Their strength may rival even the gods. Be careful."
"Well, that's all I have to say. Lance, the human blessed by the Dragon God, you have been called upon to duty." The dragon said in a serious tone.
"He gets it." Aelyndra sighed.
"Haha, I'm only flailing my task."
As the dragon took flight, its massive wings casting shadows over the capital, Lance turned to his companions.
"Send word to our allies," he ordered. "We need everyone ready. This isn't just a war after all."
Aelyndra placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "We'll face this together, Lance. Whatever it takes."
"Glad I have you by my side, Aelyndra." He said, a small smile tugging at his lips.
Lance stood outside, his eyes scanning the clear skies above the capital. The calm still lingered here, but he knew it wouldn't last. Perhaps it was because they were far south? That was why they were still relatively safe? He wasn't sure, but even then, he didn't dare question his and his kingdom's luck.
Lia soon joined him, her gaze thoughtful. "Do you think they'll come here?"
"They will," Lance said without hesitation. "It's only a matter of time."
"It's barely been a year since the undead, now this…" She said.
Worried of what was to come, especially after hearing all the stories, Lia embraced Lance tightly, holding on for a long moment, before placing a strong kiss on his lips.
"We'll pull through this." She said, reassuring herself, to which Lance supported.
