Chapter 31: 031 1000 painkillers are no longer enough
The light inside the compartment was dim, and the outside world was filled with wails. Gong Yi looked at Hua Mi, his expression still shattered, full of pain.
Just at that moment, the beeper hanging from his waist went off again. The rescue team was still calling in teammates because another earthquake had occurred.
He lowered his head, used his hand full of gashes, and rubbed his face fiercely before looking at Hua Mi again, opening his mouth.
Before he could speak, Hua Mi said,
“You go ahead, I’ll wait here for the doctor to come, no matter what happens to Cao Feng, I’ll send you a message.”
She at least had a few encounters with Cao Feng, and her impression of him wasn’t bad. For now, looking for the Factory Director could wait; once the doctors arrived for Cao Feng, it wouldn’t be too late for Hua Mi to go find the Factory Director.
Actually, it wouldn’t take Hua Mi long at all because Cao Feng’s injuries were so severe, he simply couldn’t hold on for much longer.
Cao Feng was going to die soon.
Gong Yi looked deeply at Hua Mi. His face, smeared with blood, gradually became resolute as if returning to his usual state.
He got up, his gaze lowered, casting Hua Mi completely in his shadow,
“I’ll thank you when I get back.”
“Go.”
Hua Mi looked up at him with a smile, the kiss marks on her neck already faint.
Once Gong Yi had left, Hua Mi sat by Cao Feng’s bed, watching his chest rise and fall with difficulty.
She was terrified that if she wasn’t careful, the heart under that chest would stop beating.
People outside were coming and going in a rush, with no doctors or nurses stopping by because everyone was too busy.
Hua Mi feared that Cao Feng wouldn’t last like this, just lying there; his skin was damaged all over, susceptible to infection.
So she took out a mineral water bottle and tried to clean his wounds little by little.
At first, she only washed Cao Feng’s fingers, removing the dirt and gravel, then diluted some ethanol with mineral water and wiped his fingers.
Finally, she crushed a Painkiller and lightly applied it on Cao Feng’s fingers.
Seeing that Cao Feng was still asleep, Hua Mi washed his whole arm, and once again, she crushed the Painkiller and sprinkled the white powder on Cao Feng’s blood-red arm.
Even then, Cao Feng didn’t die nor wake up, so Hua Mi became bolder.
She found a pair of scissors in Level-5 storage, cut away Cao Feng’s clothes that were already charred, and directly washed his entire body.
Afterward, she applied diluted ethanol on the untouched skin and covered it with Painkiller powder.
After finishing all this, Hua Mi looked at Cao Feng again. His brows, which had been furrowed even in sleep, had actually relaxed, as though he was sleeping peacefully.
He shouldn’t, probably not, die immediately.
Hua Mi checked Cao Feng’s breathing, which had become noticeably steadier and longer.
Then she got up and stuck her head out from behind the compartment’s curtain to look outside, wanting to ask why the doctor and nurse for Cao Feng hadn’t arrived.
However, she saw a crowd of lifeguards carrying one survivor after another who had just been dug out of the rubble.
Rushing right past her,
“Doctor, doctor, save them! Quick!”
They set down the severely wounded survivors and quickly exited the emergency area, afraid that their dusty and dirty appearance might bring germs into the area.
Somebody peered through the compartment curtain and saw Cao Feng, lying on the bed, burned so badly his whole body was a scorching red. Their eyes filling with tears, they then turned to look at Hua Mi.
Hua Mi opened her mouth,
“He just fell asleep.”
“Thank you.”
The lifeguard, whose name Hua Mi did not know, wiped away her tears and could only respond with these two words before turning around to catch up with the rest of the lifeguard team.
They hurried off to the next pile of debris.
Hua Mi couldn’t define the mixed feelings in her heart as she watched the group of dust-covered lifeguards gradually disappear into the throng of people coming and going.
She silently went back to Cao Feng’s bedside, and once again washed his entire body with mineral water bottles.
Because Cao Feng had yet to die, Hua Mi repeated the process of cleaning, rubbing him down with ethanol diluted with mineral water, and applying painkiller powder several times.
Hours passed in this way, and outside, countless houses collapsed. More and more people were brought into Xiang City’s emergency area.
During this time, Hua Mi received a message from Ah Fu. His family had decided to leave Xiang City, so he informed Hua Mi that he wouldn’t be able to deliver goods for her anymore.
With the water factory down, it seemed that Xiang City would no longer need Hua Mi’s mineral water bottles.
Hua Mi didn’t reply to the message. She felt that Ah Fu’s family might not get very far.
Sure enough, not thirty minutes later, Ah Fu sent another message. The roads out of Xiang City had collapsed, his truck was stuck in the traffic, and it had caused a blockage for the vehicles behind.
He asked if Hua Mi could help find a Clearing Team to lift his truck so that other cars could pass first.
Hua Mi thought about it and replied to Ah Fu,
[Hua Mi: The Clearing Team is very busy and probably won’t be able to get there for a while. You should find a spacious place to take shelter for now and don’t let on that you’re the owner of the truck, to avoid public outrage.]
After that message, Ah Fu didn’t reply to Hua Mi again. She didn’t mind it and sat beside Cao Feng’s bed, counting how many painkillers were left in the level 5 storage.

Clearly, the painkillers produced by the level 5 factory were effective and couldn’t be compared with those in the real world.
So 1,000 painkillers would likely not be enough.
She had used quite a few on Cao Feng.
But without finding the Factory Director, and with diesel supply cut off, Hua Mi’s level 5 energy bars had run out.
She couldn’t produce any more painkillers.
Suddenly, another wave of clamor rose from the other side, and Ah Fu’s cries could be heard.
Hua Mi stood up abruptly from her chair, glanced at the darkening sky, and looked outside, lifting the curtain. Ah Fu’s family were being brought into the emergency area by the lifeguards.
“Miss Hua, Miss Hua!”
Ah Fu, covered in blood, lay on the stretcher, tears streaming down his face as he looked at Hua Mi, who was standing beside him.
She quickly walked out from Cao Feng’s cubicle and followed Ah Fu’s stretcher, her brows knitted as she asked,
“What happened? How did you all end up like this? Was it the earthquake?”
“No, it was the people who wanted to get by. They said my truck caused the road to collapse, so… so they beat us up…”
Ah Fu, bloodied and injured, reached out his hand and grabbed Hua Mi’s hand,
“It’s all my fault. I chose to drive my big truck to leave. My family was beaten because of me. Miss Hua, can you please use your connections to help us? Please don’t abandon us, Miss Hua…”
He was panicked, his heart laden with guilt as if it truly was his fault the traffic had been brought to a standstill.
The public’s rage was directed at him because his truck had blocked the road, and his children had been beaten due to his own stubborn decisions.
Everything was his fault.
Yet he was in a state of panic, terrified of the future amid the overwhelming chaos.
