Zayla received a call as soon as Robin dropped her off at the penthouse. It was her mother but she was reluctant to answer it. When it kept ringing continuously as if the caller would not hang up, she swiped the answer button and lifted the phone to her ears.
"Mother,"
"Zayla, what are you and your father up to?" The familiar voice came from inside the phone. She was not excited about what her daughter and husband were doing, for which reason she was left in the dark. It however did not hinder her from finding out and trying to make amends before it was too late.
"Nothing, Mother. He just calls to check on me more than you do," Zayla bit her lips to stop herself from saying more, so her lie would not be detected.
"Zayla, if you are doing anything bad with him, you have to understand that it will not end well for both of you," she heard her mother say. Zayla’s anger rose at how her mother portrayed herself as the righteous one.
"Did you call to curse me again?" Zayla was agitated and unable to control it. Her mother sounded calm on the phone and responded,
"No, I called to find out the reason why you have not returned home for the past two days. I also heard your father talking to a hospital administrator before rushing out of the house to Robin’s office. Zayla, live right and only then will you find happiness. Come back home and let’s talk."
The last part of her mother’s words sounded pleading and almost drowned in tears. For a moment, Zayla wanted to drop everything and run into her arms but she just got back the man she loved and as soon as she got the villa, things would be better. She was also a step to becoming Misses Jewel so what could go wrong?
"Mom, stop being paranoid. I went on a business trip and very soon, our company will benefit from it. As for what you heard Daddy talking on the phone about, I doubt that it has anything to do with me.
"What kind of business is it?" Her mother asked, not believing her daughter.
"Don’t worry, it’s nothing of your interest." Zayla was about to hang up when she heard her mother say,
"Then you should come home as soon as possible." Without responding, Zayla hung up the phone. At the same time, it rang. Thinking it was her mother, she was about to mute it before realizing it was her dad. Smiling, she swiped the answer button and lifted the device to her ear after sticking a lock of hair at the back of her ear.
"Dad..."
"Forget everything your mother said."
"I know Dad, her words don’t move me."
"Good."
"Dad, the doctor did a good job but also said that he was leaving for California. Can you arrange for somebody else during our next visit?"
"That will not be necessary, Zayla. Robin is a very shrewd and intelligent man. He would suspect it if we tried it again. Use your charms to get him into your bed. Also, make sure that he marries you. If we don’t get the villa, we can as well partner with the Jewels after marriage. I only thought about it lately. Don’t fail me, baby doll."
"Wonderful! Dad, I won’t fail. The bitch has refused to give back the villa so I will start working on plan B. Thanks, Dad."
"Time is ticking, Zayla. You have to be fast."
"Okay."
Zayla called Robin as soon as she hung up the phone. "Darling, how is work?"
Robin frowned again at that foreign word ’darling.’ Anytime Zayla called, he perceived it to be an emergency since she was carrying his child. It was the reason he ensured to answer it.
"I’m busy, Zayla, do you need anything?"
"No, I just miss you. Remember what the doctor said?"
"Why should I forget? I will finish up and see a friend, then I will be on my way," Robin responded casually. Zayla was over the moon. It was going to happen finally.
"Alright darling, I will see you soon."
It was past lunchtime so Zayla had her lunch, which she brought from the restaurant. She ensured to have a good rest which went for three hours. Waking up, she ensured to shower and wear another sexy lingerie but this time, she ensured to not wear any perfume.
She scattered rose petals on the bed again while she waited for Robin. An hour passed and he had not arrived so she dialed his number. It went through but there was no answer. She called again but no answer. After the twentieth ring without an answer, she grew worried. Ever since they met again two months ago, Robin answered her calls no matter how busy he was.
Zayla did not have any of Robin’s friends’ contact so she did not know where to begin her search. Suddenly, the doorbell rang and she ran to it. Pulling the door open, her excitement died when she saw the two men. Robin could barely stand on his two feet and was supported by his best friend.
"Sorry, he drank a lot," Daniel Root pushed Robin into Zayla’s arms without warning. She staggered and almost fell from the weight. Gritting her teeth, she blamed Daniel,
"You should have stopped him."
Daniel shrugged. "Then you don’t know him. You should ask Sabrina for tips on how to handle him," he said and left. A smile tugged at the corner of Daniel’s lips while he walked away, as he saw the dismay in Zayla’s eyes. ’You think you can handle Robin? This is just the beginning.’
