Jiang Nanzhou knew about his family’s situation and asked, "Your brother is now training with the team, so he probably doesn’t have much time to come back home. Are you still living alone?"
Jiang Yiyi shook her head, "I’m boarding at school now. My brother said that it’s not good to keep troubling the neighbors, and he’s also worried about me going to evening self-study alone, so he arranged for me to board."
Lu Jingqiu said, "Which school do you attend?"
"Twenty-first Middle School."
"Twenty-first Middle School, that’s quite close to our home."
Jiang Nanzhou had not paid attention to the schools and didn’t really know, but he was aware that there was some distance between Jiang Yiyi’s home and their own, "There’s no middle school near your home. Why do you go to a school so far away?"
Jiang Yiyi hesitated, unsure of what to say.
Seeing the child like this, Lu Jingqiu felt there was more to the story and glanced at Jiang Nanzhou.
Jiang Nanzhou frowned slightly, thinking if the child wouldn’t speak, he might call Jiang Yuan tomorrow to inquire about the situation.
The three of them arrived at the restaurant, where Jiang Nanzhou ordered rice, a portion of braised pork, and two vegetarian dishes.
Jiang Yiyi looked at the lavish meal in front of her and subconsciously swallowed her saliva.
At her home, ever since her brother joined the military, he would send his allowance to her every month. Even though he gave her the money, she was reluctant to spend it. She cooked for herself, and aside from buying daily necessities and paying school fees, she saved the rest.
Her brother would soon be getting married, and she didn’t want to be a burden to him. Therefore, now that she was growing up, she thought she should try to share some of the load, and went out to see if there were any odd jobs she could do.
Lu Jingqiu noticed how much she liked the food but hesitated to eat more. Suddenly, her heart ached; she couldn’t stand seeing someone suffering, especially now that she was pregnant.
After the meal, Jiang Nanzhou told her to hurry home and focus on her studies. If her family encountered any difficulties, she should speak directly with his brother or tell him.
Since the young girl was hesitant to speak, Jiang Nanzhou figured he would have to talk to her brother.
Worried that she might not listen, Lu Jingqiu said with a smile, "If you’re looking to do odd jobs, I actually do have a place in mind."
Upon hearing this, the girl’s face instantly lit up with a smile, full of expectation as she looked at Lu Jingqiu, "Sister-in-law Jingqiu, I’m very diligent, and I’m not afraid of hardship."
"I have a friend who runs a grain and oil store. It gets quite busy on Sundays, and I’m not sure if she’s hiring, but I’ll ask for you. Do you know where my home is?"
Jiang Yiyi shook her head.
Lu Jingqiu took her back to the shop, wrote down an address for her, and Jiang Yiyi looked at it and smiled, "Sister-in-law Jingqiu, your place is very close to my school. It’s only a ten-minute walk."
"Yes, that’s right. So if you ever need anything, you can come to my home, but I have school too, so I’m only there mornings and evenings."
"Okay."
Jiang Yiyi left with the address, bouncing happily on her way. Lu Jingqiu watched her cheerful demeanor and laughed, "Still such a child, and already so sensible. I was quite rebellious at her age."
Jiang Nanzhou chuckled and rubbed her head, then said, "I can tell, but I was very well-behaved when I was young."
Lu Jingqiu looked down and touched her belly, "I think our baby will be well-behaved too," most importantly amenable to reason, not like her.
In the afternoon, Lu Jingqiu and Jiang Nanzhou stayed until past five before going home. Meanwhile, a great-aunt who claimed to have been an Imperial Chef came in, wanting to work.
Seeing that she seemed capable and spoke with restraint, Lu Jingqiu decided to let her come for a trial.
They hired another waitress during this period.
Although they hadn’t hired enough staff, they had enough for now.
After dinner one evening, the couple took a stroll to Xue Jianian’s place and handed her the registration book of the people they had hired that day.
"I finished my deliveries today and bought a cow. I’ll handle it after school these next couple of days. Also, our shop needs advertising. Plus, for some familiar friends and such, I plan to give out some benefits, kind of like grain coupons. What do you think about people getting a ticket that lets them come to the shop and have a bowl of beef soup?"
Lu Jingqiu said, "Of course, that’s fine. I’ll design it. Our agency is inside the printing factory, so as soon as I finish the design tomorrow, I’ll take a trip there. By the way, Niannian, shouldn’t we train the staff in advance?"
"Training?"
Xue Jianian clearly hadn’t thought of this.
Lu Jingqiu said, "We need to establish the daily routine in the shop, how to serve customers, and since we’re a private enterprise, the service has to be good; we can’t afford to show any attitude to the customers. And so far, we haven’t hired a suitable receptionist for the shop."
Xue Jianian also worried, "Right, and I haven’t found an appropriate delivery person either."
Jiang Nanzhou, who was next to them, said, "There are quite a few veterans in our team, and plenty in West City as well. Didn’t your husband Wei Jincheng introduce a few suitable ones to you?"
Xue Jianian exclaimed, "Why didn’t I think of that? But those veterans of his are from other places. Coming here just for deliveries means they’d have to rent a place, and the salary I’m offering isn’t that high. Big Brother Jiang, do you have anyone suitable?"
Jiang Nanzhou thought for a moment and said, "What about someone who’s a bit handicapped in the legs? In his thirties from West City, injured his leg on a mission, but can walk. No problem with deliveries, and he’s quite lively."
"That’s fine, could you ask for me? I need two people for delivering goods to various units and restaurants on regular days."
"Okay, once I have good news I’ll let Old Wei know."
Watching them finish their discussion, Lu Jingqiu turned to Xue Jianian and asked, "Niannian, are you still hiring for the shop, the kind that only works on Sundays?"
"...What’s up, do you know someone who needs a wage?"
Lu Jingqiu smiled and said, "A junior high school girl looking to earn some money while studying."
"I do need someone. Right now, looking at the two shops, I’m indeed busy. The grain and oil shop is busy on weekdays, and even busier on Saturdays and Sundays; my younger cousin’s daughter helps out on weekdays."
"Then I’ll talk to her. She’s young and doesn’t know much, so let her learn in the shop first. Whatever she needs to do, just instruct her."
"Alright, tell her if she does well, she’ll get one dollar a day."
"That’s quite generous."
"It’s not about being generous; my shop really is busy, especially in the evening. I had hired a delivery guy before, but he only took care of deliveries without helping in the shop. Oh, and since I need two delivery guys, I have to buy two more tricycles, and the beef soup shop will need one too."
"Classes start tomorrow, it’s too late now."
"No matter, I’ll leave it to Xinyue’s husband; he has a way."
Lu Jingqiu calculated the number of days left until their opening. They had to attend school in the next few days while Xue Jianian was swamped with work.
After going back, Lu Jingqiu took the opportunity to draw up a promotional page, the small kind, and also a card that looked nearly the same as a grain coupon. It had ’One Bowl of Beef Soup’ written on it along with the address and an expiry date set for one month.
Additionally, the signboard for their shop - West City’s First Beef Soup Shop.
It was straightforward and clear, although it was uncertain when it would be ready.
