Book 12: Chapter 78

Volume 12 Chapter 78 : Helpers (2)

In the heart of the old tigerman, Chavez, he had always aspired to step onto a real battlefield and slay those damned lowly demons ever since he was a young boy. His father, a former guard of Spirit Country, taught him that way.

However, Spirit Country had been enjoying peace and prosperity in recent years, with no major events occurring. That had inevitably caused his fervent childhood dream to fade away over time. As one of the thousands of ordinary blacksmiths in the city of Selga, Old Chavez had already made up his mind to live out the rest of his life in peace and tranquility.

Though from time to time, he would take out the imperial guard's sword left to him by his father before his passing, polish and maintain it. It was all to satisfy his inner longing and to uphold the rightful significance of the sword.

What Old Chavez never expected was that there would come a day when he would actually use it.

"Chav, are you really going?"

Just as Old Chavez was carefully adjusting the armor on himself in his blacksmith workshop, his wife, who was helping him, suddenly asked in a soft voice.

""

The motion of tightening the straps on his armor came to a halt. Faced with the sudden question, he found himself at a loss for words to respond.

Just last night, they received word that a large horde of demonic insects had emerged from somewhere and already taken over most of the territory of Margado. Margado was in dire straits.

Lord Tasser and Lord Bart had summoned guards and soldiers to go for reinforcement, but there had been no word from them yet. The third lord, Bolton, was nowhere to be found. Furthermore, something unexpected happened in Fog CastleYoung Master Taroma and Lady Senna were wanted, labeled as traitors. In other words, they had betrayed Spirit Country and joined the faction of the demonic side.

Currently, outside the city gates, many demonic insects were found. Some spirits said that Taroma and Senna had summoned them. That morning, one defense after another was breached, and the demonic insects were now at the city gates. The residents in the city had no choice but to join the city defense forces and confront the demonic creatures.

As Old Chavez's father was once an imperial guard in the royal castle, he naturally joined the defense forces.

Old Chavez volunteered for battle.

"Well, I was just asking, no need to mind it." Seeing Old Chavez not answering, his wife smiled and patted the armor on Old Chavez, "Please, make sure to come back."

"Don't worry I will definitely come back safely."

After a long silence, Old Chavez spoke. In truth, he was feeling uneasy within, because judging from the breached defenses, it was not a good omen.

"Yes, I'll be waiting for you to come back." His wife's words echoed in Old Chavez's ears.

"Hey! Chavez, don't space out! The enemy has appeared!" His companion gave Old Chavez a push.

They were currently about a kilometer outside the city, with woods on both sides, and a flat area in front where the demonic insects were crawling over.

"It's the demonic insects! Ready for battle! Atta Bam!"

Just as Old Chavez listened to the loud command of the captain of his patrol team, who was leading the troops outside the city, a huge log suddenly flew out from the deep woods not far away, smashing the captain, who was standing at the forefront of the team, heavily. In an instant, only a blood-stained, deformed helmet rolling on the ground remained, testifying to the captain's previous existence.

"Captain! Everyone, don't panic! Proceed according to the battle plan!"

Just as Old Chavez woke up from the sudden turn of events, he immediately heard the shouts of the soldiers defending the front line of the defense fence further ahead.

In the distant city area, soldiers had already sounded the demon invasion alarm!

Danger was approaching!

The instinct of being half human, half beast quickly put him into battle mode. Old Chavez picked up a short spear leaning against the wooden defense fence with caution and stuck his head out of the fence.

At that moment, with logs crazily shot from the deep woods from time to time, relentlessly smashing towards the forefront defense line of the city defense forces, he could see ugly-looking beast people, burly and sturdy, who were throwing the logs.

What tremendous strength!

Old Chavez believed that even Dennis, the strongest in the city, would not be able to easily lift such large logs, let alone throw them!

Meanwhile, countless dark brown insects poured out of the woods like a tidal wave.

"Holy dragon god! There are so many insects."

Old Chavez's comrades were astonished upon seeing the ocean of demonic insects.

Old Chavez was no different. With the midday sun hanging up high in the sky, he felt the palms of his hands beginning to sweat. However, it was not due to the sun, but rather the natural response of his body to the fear-inducing situation.

Old Chavez harbored a profound confusion Where did those demonic insects come from?

No wonder the set defense barriers they had set up were broken one by one. They were simply facing an enemy force that they could not match with!

"Archers, in position! Fire!"

The archer units, who had long been prepared, quickly formed their formation. Enduring the continuous onslaught of deadly logs, they released the first wave of arrows.

Due to the absence of magic, the first wave of arrows had minimal effect. They only managed to wound a few low-level demons mixed in the swarm. Others did not even manage to penetrate the carapace of the demonic insects, only leaving behind minor scratches on their surfaces.

"Those insects have high defenses. Attach magic to the arrows, pierce through them!"

Bows were drawn, arrows were in position, and magic coursed down the strings, all converging at the tips of the arrows.

The arrows were released! Selga truly lived up to its reputation as an industrial city. The soldiers were well-equipped, and their attacks were disciplined. The dense barrage of arrows ascended to a certain height before descending like raindrops.

The arrows enchanted with magic effectively pierced through the carapaces of the demonic insects. The soldiers were very pleased, for they saw that those later demonic insects were actually feasting on the corpses of their companions.

"Eat, eat! Eat more, and then go die!"

After several waves of arrow showers, thousands of demonic insects were killed. When it came to another round of arrow rain, the archers were surprised to find that their arrows could no longer perce through the carapaces of the demonic insects!

Though they released several rounds of magic arrows, they had become a bit tired. Yet, the attack power of the arrow rain had not weakened.

"Attack! Attack! Havent you all eaten the porridge?!" The archer captain shouted.

The archers reinforced their magic and began to release magic arrows again.

Again and again, the archers found that after feasting on their companions, the demonic insects evolved! Their defense became even stronger!

Finally, the archers' arrows could no longer penetrate the carapaces of the demonic insects. Furthermore, they had released too much magic, leaving them exhausted and temporarily devoid of combat ability.

"Retreat." The archer captain ordered the archers to withdraw, and the demonic insects sped up, beginning to prey on the archers in the front row who had not managed to escape.
