The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse-Chapter 639 - 632 Do you want to die?
Chapter 639: Chapter 632 Do you want to die?
Yang Yi spoke to a captive, and then the captive answered two questions.
And then, there was nothing else; that Max Ivan was taken away again.
Gao Yuan couldn’t help but say, "You want to drive him to despair, don’t you? And then he’ll spill everything he knows?"
Yang Yi glanced at Gao Yuan, and then smiled, "I indeed want to make him despair, but I won’t let him talk. He knows what he would go through, but even if he wants to talk now, I wouldn’t listen. At least, the confessions now cannot be trusted. It’s a long-term aim, certainly one that will lead to the truth eventually. It’s just that it requires quite a bit more time."
Gao Yuan let out a sigh, "I don’t really understand, but I get it, thank you."
Yang Yi looked at his watch and said, "Bring in the next one."
Another Graycloak was brought up, this time dressed in a shirt to make him appear less repulsive, because here Xinghe was present; no one wanted to display the crueler side of humanity in front of aliens.
"May I sit?"
The second captive sat down promptly, but Gao Yuan noticed that he seemed more uncomfortable sitting than standing. Did that mean this captive wanted to show a tough front?
"Do you want to die?"
Yang Yi posed the second question.
The Graycloak nodded, his voice grave, "If it’s possible, thank you."
"Not for now, we have medical pods, you know what I mean."
Yang Yi laughed, then continued indifferently, "The interrogation is halted because I know it’s pointless to go on like this. You have a second personality, right? Oh, sorry, I forgot to ask you, do you know who I am?"
"Poseidon, the one who heavily damaged the Graycloaks—of course I know you," responded the captive.
Yang Yi smiled, "Good, then there’s no need for me to emphasize how well I understand you. I haven’t met you before, what’s your name?"
"Campbell."
"Campbell, why did the Elder Council accept newcomers who hadn’t had time to develop a second personality? Is it because there are not many of you left since I have been hunting you, and you urgently need to replenish your ranks?"
"Yes, we always need to replenish our ranks. After merging with the Sanitation Workers, we needed to bring new members into the Elder Council to occupy the seats we are entitled to."
Yang Yi picked up his notebook and laughed, "So this is your new talent, communicating with the Serpent People using Morse code. I truly didn’t expect this. It’s quite creative, simple, but very practical."
Seeing the Morse code in Yang Yi’s notebook, Campbell showed no expression or made any movement. He just glanced at it briefly before lowering his head.
Yang Yi sighed and said, "Prisoner’s dilemma works wonders. It’s really simple to extract a confession from a newcomer who hasn’t formed a second personality. But I need to verify it. As you know, that’s our basic requirement. So, would you like to provide verification? If you agree, I’ll kill you right now. I’ll give you a weapon, and you can commit suicide. Just tell me the answer, and then... Do you agree?"
"I agree, but I cannot trust you, it’s difficult for me to convince you, and you would find it just as difficult to convince me. Whatever we say can’t make the other believe, regardless of any guarantee. So... why bother?"
Yang Yi gave a wry smile, "Indeed, the word ’trust’ is really meaningless to us. But haven’t you noticed the presence of this Celestial?"
He pointed toward Xinghe and laughed, "With him here, you can trust. So you can speak now. A true Celestial will discern truth from lies."
Campbell finally looked up towards Xinghe, then stared at him for a long time without speaking.
Yang Yi let out a sigh, "Spending a lifetime deceived by a faith, and at the moment of death, discovering that the God you believed in does exist. But the sad thing is that you are an enemy of God. That is truly... ironic."
Campbell’s hand clenched involuntarily, but he quickly released it due to the pain, which also caused his body to shiver.
Finally, Xinghe spoke softly, "Why betray the Celestials? We kept our promise and came, but you chose betrayal."
Campbell opened his mouth, then dejectedly sighed, "You came... too late."
Yang Yi spread his hands, "Exactly, so even after you discovered the real Celestials had come, you still chose to cooperate with the Serpent People because you couldn’t turn back, right? It’s really laughable... Sorry, I’m not mocking you, but I genuinely find it funny."
Campbell took a deep breath, then looking at Xinghe said, "We couldn’t find the Ark. There wasn’t one. The Celestials deceived us, you said by putting together Revelation and the Ark of the Covenant we could find the Ark. But we searched for hundreds of years until we had to separate them to preserve them. We were attacked by heretics, by worldly governments. We struggled to survive for thousands of years. But why couldn’t you send a message? Even just a word, a signal, to let us know that the Celestials were still there, still watching over us."
With indifference, Xinghe said, "I cannot answer. We made a promise, which we kept. Celestials are not Gods; we can only do what Celestials can do. And we did it—we promised to help you when evil aliens invaded, that’s why I’m here."
Campbell gave a tragic laugh, "You just came too late?"
Xinghe remained silent.
With a weary sigh, Campbell lowered his head and said, "We have always been trying to contact the Celestials, but the Revelation remained in the hands of the Sanitation Worker. We tried to acquire it, but... humanity really deserves extinction."
Yang Yi said in a grave voice, "Don’t push all the blame onto others. If your purpose was truly to save humanity, wouldn’t it have been better to willingly merge with the Sanitation Worker? Both the Sanitation Worker and the Graycloaks are selfish; don’t make yourselves out to be so noble, it’s meaningless."
In a low voice, Campbell said, "We truly believed that the Snake People were the Celestials. The first contact with the Serpent People happened when humans first landed on the Moon. We discovered remnants of an alien civilization on the Moon."
No one spoke; Campbell continued in a trance, "This was a message strictly sealed off, top secret. Our agents in the upper echelons of America let you know of this message, and then, further Moon landings uncovered more traces of alien civilization. Later, the second kind of contact happened. We knew the aliens were still around; they had always been."
Campbell lifted his head, "We were ecstatic, attempting to contact the Celestials by all means possible. While America abandoned further Moon landings, we still tried to establish contact with the aliens. We devoutly expressed our willingness to serve as slaves, until one day, they intercepted a segment of Earth’s radio communication."
Campbell paused, then looking at the people present, he said softly, "So, contact with the Serpent People began sixty years ago. We have been preparing for the descent of a deity ever since, until the deity blessed us with a vaccine, until the deity unleashed a plague. Every one of us knew we were wrong, perhaps this deity was not the one we had hoped for, but then, was it too late to turn back?"
