Chapter 42: Chapter 42:Status [1]

Bringing my head up, I immediately focused my brain, clearing all external distractions and sounds.

Based on my memories from yesterday, I would assume it had something to do with speed or time.

As the word "Menu" echoed throughout my head, I suddenly saw a faint light-blue color out of the corner of my left eye.

After reading the entire menu, I paused for a moment and then, with an open mouth, honed in on my gift’s description.

I was...quite literally the demon king, so I did expect a powerful gift...and EX was the highest tier of gift that one could receive.

Usually, gifts were specific, such as:

--> When dual-wielding swords, your accuracy and power are boosted. To activate this ability, select two swords that are almost identical in all qualities, such as length, width, and weight. If one of the swords is knocked out of your hands during the fight, you have a minute to pick the sword back up before the boost disappears.

An example of an ability for such a gift above would then be:

---> Flawless [A] : After landing three hits in a row, you start a flawless streak. For each additional hit after three, your strength and speed are boosted exponentially. If the opponent hits your body, the streak is reset to 0

A gift’s description essentially determines your future weapon and statistical advantage, allowing you to see what you should train the most.

On the other hand, gifted abilities aid the gift in increasing your power in combat or simply improve your movement and quality of life..

Most gifts have at least two to four lines of description, perfectly outlining the boundaries and limits of their ability.

However, that means that the more words there are in the description of your gift, the more restricted and limited it is.

Your sword cuts through time...that was a very ambiguous and short statement.

It was so vague, in fact...that it didn’t even mention a specific sword, like a katana or broadsword, that I needed to use.

Shifting my gaze down to the three questions marked, I sighed before recalling yesterday’s events.

Having a gifted ability with three question marks was common, as it simply means you are able to use the ability but do not have full mastery over it.

It was quite obvious to me, though, that "Time Freeze" allowed me to temporarily slow time.

*BANG*

Interrupting my analysis, I suddenly felt something plastic slam into my head.

"...a bucket?"

Although the bucket didn’t necessarily hurt, the impact caused me to completely lose my train of thought.

As I looked upward confusedly, a completely emotionless voice sounded from a couple of feet away.

"We have to finish cleaning this before Liana sees it."

Heeding her words and nodding my head, I stood up and began to clean up the makeshift bed Evangel had created, putting the chairs in their correct place and setting the tablecloth back on a nearby table.

Evangel’s gift...if I remember correctly, was, "Your sword moves faster than wind."

I couldn’t recall her gifted abilities, but thankfully, she had already shown me one.

Her first gifted ability was movement related, as she could create wind currents, which she had used to scale the wall and carry me over the marketplace.

Based on what I had seen, she probably had full mastery over that ability already.

Taking one last glance at my fading status menu, I began sweeping my broomstick across the floor, halting as the blood-stained wood came into view.

Not only had I unlocked my gift...but I also gained something from my trait.

Glancing around, I made sure Evangel wasn’t looking at me before slowly approaching the mirror.

Partially peeling off the bandage of my right eye, I curiously gazed at my reflection.

"..."

There was no iris or pupil in my right eyelid...a blood-red orb simply floated where they should have been, surrounded a void-black color.

It was worse than I had thought.

Immediately, I began to stumble and grasped onto a chair to stabilize myself before covering my right eye with the bandage again.

Everything was so blurry...and distorted.

I couldn’t make out anything with my right eye, even my reflection.

All I saw was a bunch of mixed-up particles that gathered together to form a bunch of jumbled-up colors.

I was...essentially blind in my right eye.

Sighing, I turned around and went to the bar top, grabbing a rag and splashing it with water.

Just like the last Demon God Lineagle ability, this one was extremely dangerous.

As I leaned down and scrubbed my own blood off the wooden floor, I suddenly felt the ground vibrate behind me.

A couple of moments later, Evangel’s cold and somewhat skeptical voice finally sounded.

"Does it hurt?"

Pausing for a moment, I attempted to find a way to explain what had happened yesterday.

How could I explain my teleportation, in her eyes, and the blood leaking out of my eyes?

Evangel was sharp and not one to forget moments like that, so if I didn’t come up with something, she would theorize on her own...and perhaps even come to the right conclusion.

Sighing, I pointed at the air ahead of me, pretending it was a status menu, and said.

"Enlightened...I unlocked my gift yesterday."

In some situations, the process of enlightenment can be extremely painful as your body has to adjust and adapt to your gift, which takes a lot of time.

In the reflection of the blood-stained wood in front of me, I could see Evangel’s face suddenly light up as her eyebrows raised; however, a moment later, she simply responded.

"I see...congratulations."
