Wealthy Beauty in the 60s-Chapter 34 The Mother Bear Gives Birth to Cubs
Chapter 34 - 34 The Mother Bear Gives Birth to Cubs
"Just follow behind them and pick up what they miss."
Xia Xiao shook her head, "It's not that easy to pick up leftovers."
"You could at least learn how to hunt."
Xia Xiao agreed with this, it seemed she still had to learn how to hunt, at least to catch a rabbit or a pheasant or something.
Trailing behind a group of men, Xia Xiao wasn't idle either. The men were all after the Black Bear and had no interest in the wild vegetables, wild fruits, or even mushrooms and wood ear around them; Xia Xiao, on seeing them, picked and pulled them, busily enjoying herself.
Shitou reminded her, "Xiaoxiao, don't get too close to them, stay back a bit, or you'll be discovered."
"Okay," Xia Xiao didn't follow any further. Shitou could see further than she could and was more sensitive too.
Soon after, Xia Xiao heard gunshots, the chanting "bang bang bang" that followed, and then roaring and howling sounds. She anxiously asked, "One is the sound of a bear, what's the other sound?"
"It sounds like a wild boar."
Xia Xiao's heart tightened; it seemed that Nanhua Mountain was indeed very dangerous.
"Xiaoxiao, come in quickly."
Xia Xiao hastily darted into the space and asked, "What's happening?"
"A wild beast is coming."
Xia Xiao's heart was gripped with anxiety too; right now, in the space, she knew nothing of what was going on outside, she sighed and said, "It would be nice if the space could let us see what's happening outside."
"I'm not that powerful," Shitou added.
Xia Xiao pouted in disappointment, "I was just saying."
"Let's go, we will go out and have a look."
As soon as Xia Xiao heard this, she immediately went out and gasped lightly as her foot touched the ground, "There's a blood trail."
"It's from a wild beast; a beast has been injured."
"Should we follow it?" To be honest, Xia Xiao was somewhat tempted, but she had no weapon. She couldn't defeat even an injured beast unless it was dead, but what if it were still alive?
"Those people will probably follow it too, and since you don't have any weapons, it's better not to take the risk."
When Shitou said that, Xia Xiao's enthusiasm was extinguished. She just felt it was too bad not to have a handy weapon.
Even without a knife or a club, a brick would do. Xia Xiao paused, then thought of Shitou, turning into a big rock, she said, "Gege, you could actually be a weapon too. I could throw you, and you'd turn into a big rock to squash the beasts flat."
"Hmm, that's possible," Shitou said.
Xia Xiao paused, "What if you get stained with the beast's blood again? Could it also enter the space at will?"

Xia Xiao now had to ensure her position and safety. It would be very dangerous if a beast could enter the space just like her blood did.
"You're overthinking it, I've already made a Blood Covenant with you. You are my covenant master, and we're bound together. There won't be anyone else," Shitou said in a soft and mushy voice.
Xia Xiao breathed a sigh of relief, but suddenly a voice rang out, "There's blood here, it definitely ran this way."
Xia Xiao inwardly cursed her luck and immediately dashed back into the space.
Xia Xiao kept flickering in and out of the space, over and over again. All she could see and hear was a group of people running around chasing after wild animals, as well as the enraged attacks of the beasts.
In the end, Xia Xiao thought they had struck a bear, but to her surprise, they had hunted down a wild boar instead. Moreover, several people were injured, some even bitten by the beasts, but still, catching a wild boar was considered a gain.
"Brother, is this the blood of a wild boar?"
"No, this is bear blood. Let's go check it out. You might get lucky," Shitou said.
After the group descended the mountain, Xia Xiao slowly followed the trail of blood, carefully searching, and it was clear that Black Bear had been wounded.
However, it was odd that there were no footprints near the bloodstains. It seemed they had hit Black Bear, but when chasing him, they had encountered a wild boar, so they went after the boar instead.
Soon, Xia Xiao arrived at a low-lying area, where the bloodstains disappeared, but she quickly heard groaning sounds. As Xia Xiao slowly approached the underbrush, she saw two Black Bears.
"Roar," one of the Black Bears roared at Xia Xiao, which startled her. She prepared to dart into her space, but realized both bears had been shot. The other Black Bear had a swollen belly and looked as though she was about to give birth.
"She's got cubs," Shitou said.
"She's going to give birth," Xia Xiao said, observing that the mother bear didn't seem to be doing well.
The male Black Bear, seeing Xia Xiao, might have spared her because she had no weapons on her, or perhaps because she was too small, or maybe because the bear was preoccupied with caring for the mother bear, didn't attack Xia Xiao.
The mother Black Bear let out a low, mournful howl as if she was trying to endure silently, afraid to make noise, afraid to cry out loud.
For the first time, Xia Xiao witnessed a wild animal giving birth. She stood there motionless while both bears were bleeding. The male Black Bear continuously licked the mother's wounds and bloodstains, occasionally emitting warning sounds towards Xia Xiao.
Xia Xiao watched, feeling touched, her eyes moistening.
"Brother, can the water from my space save them? I want to save them. I suddenly don't want them to die," Xia Xiao said.
"I don't know. You can try," Shitou replied.
Immediately, Xia Xiao took out a clay jar filled with spring water she had stored, and slowly stepped forward.
Growling, the male Black Bear issued another warning sound, seeming ready to charge at Xia Xiao.
Xia Xiao froze in place, not daring to overstep. However, seeing the mother bear in such poor condition, and after a long time, her cubs not being born, with her cries growing weaker, and her large bear eyes nearly closing, she looked as though she was dying.
Xia Xiao thought about the pheasants in her space, which had grown quite a bit now. Originally, they were meant to be eaten, but at this moment, she hoped the mother bear could successfully give birth. So, Xia Xiao threw one of the pheasants from her space at the bears.
The male Black Bear instantly pounced on the small pheasant, and shoved it into the mother bear's mouth. The mother bear instinctively bit and ate it.
Watching this scene, Xia Xiao realized the mother bear was hungry, and since the male bear was wounded and the mother bear was giving birth, there was no way for the male bear to leave her side.
"It's not enough for them," Shitou said.
Biting her lip, Xia Xiao tossed another pheasant over. She only had a total of two in her space, and now both were given to the bears.
"Brother, am I being foolish?" Xia Xiao murmured to herself. She had come to the mountains to find treasures, watching others hunt in hopes of scavenging something. But now that there was an opportunity, she couldn't bring herself to do it. She wanted to save the bears and ended up giving her pheasants to the mother bear to eat. It was as if her compassion had exploded.
"No, you're very kind, Xiaoxiao," Shitou said.
"But I'm saving wild animals. What if they turn on me after I save them?" Xia Xiao sighed.
"All creatures under heaven are living spirits. Xiaoxiao is doing the right thing; we shouldn't take advantage of the bear's plight," Shitou said.
"Brother, you must have been some high-powered treasure before. Look at the quality of your words," Xia Xiao teased with a twisted mouth. Hunting was all about seizing the opportunity when the animal was vulnerable; how else could one catch prey? Yet here she was, without the heart to eat the bears.
