Inside the control chamber, it was deathly silent, with only the clear sound of Lina and Pannis’s breathing audible.
Lina had never known her heart could beat so rapidly, nor her breaths shorten into gasps.
Through the metallic doors, the continuous crisp shattering of crystals could be heard. It was unclear when it had started, and equally uncertain when it would end. Each sound of a crystal shattering might represent the awakening of an ancient magical beast.
While these beasts were in slumber, it was impossible to discern their strength. However, based on the Earth Walker beast they had previously encountered, the lowest rank should be Silver. The proportion of Golden ranks could be as high as 25%. There were fifty crystal vats left in the room outside. If the magical beasts soaked inside had all awakened, that possibly meant they would have to face fifty famished, ravenous beasts that had just been roused from their slumber. At least ten of these would be of the Golden rank.
Behind them was a lockable door, beyond which was a hundred-meter-long corridor. At the end of that corridor was a dense rock wall. Just rocks, no path, no hope.
Suddenly, they found themselves in a dead end.
A moment ago, they were on an ordinary Harvest Festival vacation trip. A moment ago, they were embarking on a peaceful, non-threatening exploration, and in the very next moment, they had found themselves in a deadly trap.
Such was the life of an adventurer. People usually observed their leisurely and unruffled lifestyle. People usually focused on their handsome earnings, but at places unseen, danger and death was all they had to face. They danced on the edge of life and death, drank to the crises and fears with cups filled with their own blood and life. The decorations at this dance party were the countless white bones of those who came before, swinging in the turbulent sea of blood and life. This was the true spectacle of an adventurer’s life.
"Get back," Pannis said, his eyes fixed on the grand portal as he started to slowly retreat. "Let’s retreat and lock the door. We have enough food for three days. Even after that, I will find ways to let us hang on. There’s plenty of time for you to slowly alter the structure using Divine Spells and create a path leading to the surface. As for the strength of the door, you can rest assured. Given the level of Goblin technology, the beasts won’t be able to break it open with their bare bodies."
Taking a deep breath, Lina shook her head, "You go back. Hold out for a while. Catherine will surely come looking for us with the Guild. I can’t leave."
Pannis furrowed his brows, "What’s wrong? Why can’t you leave?"
"Because I’m not stupid. I know what would happen once we retreat. You deliberately didn’t mention it earlier hoping I wouldn’t think of it, but unfortunately for you, I did. A group of hungry magical beasts, without any odor removal powder to disguise our scent, would naturally follow the smell and find us. But if we retreat and lock the door, in a while, they would turn their attention outward. Although the earth is complex outside, that’s only for humans, not for magical beasts. They could crawl out easily. There are thousands of people out there lined up, waiting to be their dinner, am I right?"
Pannis sighed and nodded his head.
"It’s my fault. I have to fix this," Lina replied with a bitter smile, her voice extremely firm. "Even though I may not be able to solve this, I can’t let them shift their focus outside until I’m dead."
Pannis sighed again, "I thought Catherine was the only fool in our adventure team. I didn’t expect you to be one as well."
"Of course, I’m one of the fools, too." As if recalling a funny past event, Lina chuckled and said, "Priests of the God of Love are sometimes more stubborn than knights."
A faint sound of metal rubbing against metal resonated in the small control room. The door that had kept the two safe was starting to open slowly. Pannis immediately jumped in front of the door and gave a kick before it could fully open.
Lina barely had time to see the beast outside before the door closed with a roar, along with the terrible shriek of a beast.
Lina was taken aback, noticing Pannis standing outside the pressure sensor range of the entrance. She asked absent-mindly, "Aren’t you going back?"
"Nonsense." Pannis grunted, "Having said all that, if I were to withdraw now, I would no longer be considered a human. Don’t judge me by my appearance. In my younger days, I too was the kind of person who would risk my life for the sake of the innocent. Even though I loathe who I was back then, it doesn’t mean I despise those acts. If you can risk your life, what is stopping me from doing the same? Besides, don’t forget what I said. I absolutely won’t die."
Lina stared blankly at Pannis, her expression shifting on her face, finally settling on a delicate smile. She picked up her hammer and strode to Pannis’s side: "Let’s fight side by side then, and crush them all."
Outside the metal door, after the magical beast had been kicked back, it fell into a brief silence with no sound. However, moments later, all kinds of noise-making magical beasts started howling loudly, and before the howling stopped, there was a dull impact on the door and the door opened again.
Outside the door, everything had completely changed.
All the jars were shattered, and the entire space was exposed. A thick layer of cobweb hung from the roof, and three giant spiders, each larger than a person, hung upside down from the web, looking down. Their bodies were covered with stiff hair, and a patchwork of eyes on their heads that could be clearly distinguished even from twenty to thirty meters away. Two giant butterflies fluttered in the air between the cobweb and the floor. Another one was stuck in the web. Despite slicing off a few strands with the sharp edges on its wings, the sticky web kept lingering on the butterfly. More than forty various magical beasts were churning on the ground below, only a few were attacking each other while the rest were gathered near the door. As soon as the door opened, over a hundred fierce, hungry eyes shot over all at once.
At the entrance, a giant wolf covered in black scales was staring curiously at the door. As the door opened, the giant Dragonscale wolf didn’t have time to respond before an arrow, charged with Aggression, came whistling towards it from an uncanny angle straight at its right eye. Before it could dodge, an arrow slammed into the wolf’s forehead, and while the scales couldn’t stop the Aggression entirely, it did manage to deflect the arrow, leaving only a white mark.
"Haaahh!" Lina shouted, hammer in hand. The head of her hammer was swathed in a holy glow, making it look larger than it was. The luminous hammer swirled through the air and, just as the wolf was lowering its head, it came crashing down, smacking the gigantic wolf flat on the floor, blood oozing from its nose and mouth. With a powerful impact, the giant wolf let out a wail. It was trying to recover when a one-handed sword pierced its partially opened mouth from the ground, moving upwards through its mouth and upper jaw into its brain.
Even the clearly highly defensive giant wolf could only give an indignant howl before collapsing and losing its life under such a tricky attack.
"Ha, well done, the first one is Gold rank, and there are forty-nine left." Lina stood up in front of Pannis, a sledgehammer in one hand, a spellbook in the other, blocking the entrance without fear. Energetic and flushed with excitement, she said, "We’ll stay here, kill one for each one that comes, sooner or later we’ll clean them all up."
The bowstring twanged quietly, and two arrows shot out from either side of Lina’s waist, without warning. Their paths crossed in the air, each arrow heading for the sides of the door. One hit a crocodile on the left side, whose thick hide was undisturbed by the arrow. The other hit a nightblade leopard on the right, closely whizzing past its head, taking one of its ears with it.
Actually, there was a third arrow.
After the first two arrows, when the attention of the magical beasts outside the door was drawn to the two arrows, the third quietly shot out. It flew between Lina’s legs, sticking close to the ground and very subtly, passed through the gaps between the beasts. The arrowhead suddenly lifted, and the whole arrow abruptly changed direction, shooting straight up.
In the air, a butterfly just happened to be there, a magnificent three-meter-wide butterfly, its wing edges glistening with a blade-like cold light, continuously circling in the air, looking for an opportunity to attack prey. Its normally coiled proboscis had somehow turned sharp and straight, the half-meter-long needle-like mouth was exceptionally sharp and could clearly pierce any part of the human body without any doubt.
The butterfly was spinning very fast, but the arrow flew even faster. The odd flight trajectory deceived the butterfly’s attention, and its lightning speed meant it had no chance to dodge. The arrow, spinning continuously in and of itself, hit the butterfly’s softest part of its abdomen, with a sound as dull as a broken drum, passed through the butterfly, leaving a rain of green juice falling from the sky.
The magnificent butterfly stiffened in the air, struggling for a few seconds, before finally falling gently to the ground, motionless.
"The shooting technique of the Elven Phantom Archer, the arrow skill with no dead zones." Pannis gave a faint smile: "The second one, forty-eight left."
While Pannis was shooting, Lina had been standing at the door, wielding her hammer to keep the approaching beasts at bay while the spellbook in her hand flashed a faint yellow light, conjuring one barrier after another to share the burden of defense.
"Well done." Watching Pannis’s successful sneak attack, Lina applauded and called out, "I can’t hold on any longer, come help me, I will go call for backup."
"Uhh... okay." Pannis struggled a bit to understand what Lina was trying to say. He quickly switched places with Lina, standing before the door with a one-handed sword in each hand. Whenever a beast drew near to attack, he would either hit or stab it with his sword, killing their attack before it could happen. Some beasts tried to charge into Pannis, relying on their sturdy bodies, but in the process, Pannis would kick them from different angles, turning their straightforward charge into a side one, and they would end up ramming the walls on both sides of the door. Pannis stood in front of the door for several seconds. Although his attack power was not enough to kill any beast, not a single one of the beasts at the door had been able to launch a successful attack.
Just as the beasts at the door were anxiously attacking, a huge crawling noise sounded from the perimeter. The beasts at the door seemed to sense something and they mutually moved aside, creating a pathway about two meters wide.
At the end of the passage, forty to fifty meters away, a giant centipede, four meters long, was wriggling its numerous legs and charging towards Pannis like a Siege Hammer.
