Chapter 212 - 140: Fucked Up Destiny (2)
"That’s Kuman. I suggest you show him some respect. Even if he can’t see your existence in Destiny, as an Astrologer, he can deduce your presence from the missing piece of Destiny."
Carmen said, "As for the engagement to Fei, that was all KK’s doing. At that time, I was relying on the Red Dragon for the first time..."
The Witch changed the subject. "In short, KK was the one who agreed to the marriage."
"Why?" Baron asked, curious.
In his opinion, the difference between KK and Carmen wasn’t actually that great. Everyone has two sides.
For example, in his previous life, he would sometimes get so down from his mom’s illness, pressure from his boss, or his colleagues blaming him for their mistakes that he didn’t want to say a single word.
But other times, after happening upon one or two inspirational short videos, he would be fired up with ambition, wanting to become the next titan of the film industry.
"Because she thought it was fun," Carmen said coldly.
"Logically speaking, you are KK, and KK is you. Maybe you like Wizard Fei yourself and just don’t know it?" Baron said. "Otherwise, you could have just taken over directly like you are now..."
Baron fell silent. A terrible thought had suddenly surfaced in his mind.
If what Yelena wrote in her diary was true, and Zhou Yike was really just one personality resulting from the Constantine Clan’s long-standing so-called "Blood Curse"—which was in fact a symptom of schizophrenia...
Then did that mean the original owner of this body could take over from him at any moment?
Just like how Carmen took over from KK.
And correspondingly, KK only had some of Carmen’s memories. As for the rest, because Carmen was unwilling to share, KK was left in the dark.
’It seems I’m in the same situation... Aside from a few fragments of the original owner’s memories in my mind, most of what I know about him comes from two diaries, one representing the Outer Side and the other the Inner Side.’
’What if, just as I suspected before, the original owner intentionally left these two diaries to guide me?’
At this thought, Baron suddenly shivered, a chill running down his spine.
But just then, Carmen answered his previous question. "I just don’t think it matters. This marriage was always a transaction... Fei believes that only I am worthy of him, who is destined to become a Golden Mage."
"And I happen to need the Wizard Tower to find Dragon Scales for me and help me acquire some of the resources needed to Promote."
’Such a postmodern elite marriage.’
It was a pity the timing was off. Otherwise, Baron could have given the Dragon Witch a proper lecture on the fine art of modern transactional marriage between equals—the kind where "you demand a million in bride price, and my dowry is a set of bedsheets."
Baron said, "If that’s the case, why not go back with them? Prole might be a bit rustic, but compared to the Inner Side where so many people want you dead, it’s got to be safer, right?"
Not to mention you’ve got a super-rich second-generation fiancé to fall back on... Baron thought of his own former fiancée from the Inner Side and her fiancé.
He suddenly felt that, setting aside the original owner of his body, the power couple union of the Hestia Family and Lancelot’s Family did seem a lot better than the lunatics from the Constantine Family, stuck out in the boonies.
Why not go back... Carmen glanced at Baron silently. "I don’t want to..."
She paused. "I don’t want to think about all that right now. Besides, if I go back, Kuman might force Fei and me to get married... But that’s not what I want. At least, not right now."
’Everyone has their own goals.’
Baron thought to himself, gazing at the rose-gold eyes faintly visible under her hood.
The bay horse was still galloping down the road, but at a turn, Carmen suddenly said, "Follow me," and yanked the reins, veering into the forest.
Baron had lost count of how many times they had changed direction. He felt that although they were still maneuvering within the large forest outside Fude City, they were getting farther and farther away from it.
It seemed Carmen’s fiancé was no easy foe. Even the Dragon Witch, a being on the cusp of the Golden Tier, was forced to run in circles in the woods for the time being.
They ran through the forest like this for an unknown amount of time. After confirming that Palmer’s men wouldn’t be catching up anytime soon, it was the Witch who, for a change, spoke first. "What’s the deal with your profession? I can understand Dragon Knight, but what about this ’Blood Faction Demon Hunter’ that red-haired woman mentioned?"
"Does this have something to do with the Underground Altar from before, and those Dragon God and Blood God Prayers you were talking about?"
’What I was dreading has finally come.’
Baron sighed inwardly, wondering how he could fool the Witch.
But the Witch’s next words made his face fall.
"You have two professions?"
"It’s... uh... it’s a bit complicated..."
"You could pretend to be blind the first time we met, but pretending to be a mute won’t work this time."
The rose-gold eyes stared hauntingly at Baron. "You’ve received the acknowledgment of two different Laws, haven’t you?"
’The acknowledgment of two Laws... Does she mean the Law of the Demon Hunter and the Law of the Knight?’
Baron was still somewhat wary of the Witch. Even though they had gotten along reasonably well so far and were constrained by their mutual needs, she had, after all, screwed him over during their first contract. Even though she had claimed it had nothing to do with her and had even helped him out of a jam at his ex-fiancée’s engagement party, Baron still found it impossible to trust her completely.
A subconscious part of his mind was probably telling him that women who earned the title of "Witch" might not be evil, but they were definitely not good either.
Faced with her question, he said, "Let’s make it a trade, then."
"What kind of trade?"
The Witch’s gaze, from under the brim of her hat, fell upon the Demon Hunter’s hand, which was tightly gripping the gun at his waist.
She tugged at the corners of her mouth, her vibrant lips curling into an imperceptible smirk.
"I’ll tell you everything about my profession... and you..."
’Men. Give them an inch and they’ll take a mile.’
The Witch gave a cold laugh. She was just about to remind the Dragon Knight with her usual icy arrogance that even though she was injured, and even though he had helped her escape the banquet, she was by no means someone he could trifle with now.
But the Dragon Knight’s next words caught Carmen completely off guard.
"Just tell me why you quoted that line from *Hamlet* to me back then."
"That line?"
"’To be, or not to be, that is the question,’" Baron said.
Carmen probably hadn’t expected that after mulling it over for so long, this was the only question Baron could come up with. She was silent for a moment before asking in an uncertain tone,
"Are you sure that’s the question you want for this trade?"
’Could you tell me about your relationship with the Red Dragon, the truth about the Fall of the Red Dragon, and the deal with the mysterious person who chose me to be a Knight...’ Baron griped internally, but on the surface, he just nodded.
"Just this question."
Seeing this, Carmen was straightforward. "It just came to mind, so I said it."
"You like poetry?" Baron raised an eyebrow.
’So the Witch is an artsy type.’
Carmen’s tone was casual. "The Elves like it. I once kidnapped a princess of the Inner Forest Elves. She loved to recite poems and operas in my ear all day... After a while, some of it just stuck."
Baron’s eyebrow twitched again.
’Never mind. Not a poet, just a punk.’
Still, the Witch had given him an answer. He mulled it over for a moment, and just as he was about to speak, he caught a glimpse of a figure suddenly darting out from the woods in the corner of his eye.
"Watch out!"
He didn’t need to say it. The next second, Carmen had already flipped off Nuzi’s back.
The next second, with the bay horse’s mournful, sobbing cry, Nuzi was split in two by a giant sword.
Seeing this, the corner of Baron’s eye twitched.
’Is that Palmer’s pursuer? Isn’t that Carmen’s ’chasing-the-wife-to-the-crematorium’ squad? Judging by the attack, it doesn’t look like they plan to bring Carmen back alive... Don’t tell me this is for a posthumous marriage?’
When Carmen landed gracefully behind Baron, in a flash, the two of them saw the attacker’s figure clearly in the sparse sunlight filtering through the woods.
The look in Baron’s eyes changed dramatically. He subconsciously reached for his gun as his Cross Blood Eye appeared and Dragon Flame ignited around his body.
The attacker was, shockingly, a—
"Undead Knight."
Carmen said, her voice ice-cold.
