Chapter 29 - Thrown To Beggars

Going back a bit in time.

Still at the capital's reception, the attendant briefly explained to Darian:

"To register and move into the capital, each person needs to pay the equivalent of two million Merit Points. Monthly, the cost to keep your registration valid will be half a million each."

Darian already knew that every hundred Merit Points equaled a thousand in Imperial currency. So, two million points just to register and move in was an unbelievable amount. However, he didn't care since he had 777 million to use.

"Many Imperial agents live outside the capital with their families due to the high costs. However, within the capital reside the Empire's greatest clan and several smaller ones. It's an extremely beneficial place for agents to make connections and exchange their points for resources with others. That's why the cost is considered small compared to the benefits."

She finished explaining, and Darian nodded in understanding. The woman looked at Rhea, who also nodded, indicating that she would show him the city and they didn't need a guide. Then, the attendant handed three registration cards to Darian.

"Get a plane for us to use. He's bringing his family immediately," Rhea requested from the attendant.

The attendant nodded and returned to the counter. Within minutes, they were taken to an area outside the city, where they boarded a plane with a classic and simple design, but no pilot.

"It's a bit risky for me to fly across the continent without being seen. I need to be very careful and spend a lot of energy. These aircraft, however, are quite cheap to rent in the capital. With this, you can move throughout the Empire, but it's strictly forbidden to go to another Empire or even approach the ocean. You can only go to the Celestial Temple if you receive authorization or a summons through your badge."

Rhea explained seriously, staring at him.

"The Empire's rules are absolute. Don't forget that they know exactly where you are at all times. You're no longer just a normal human—you're a powerful weapon. And yes, the other Empires are anything but our allies, which is why they don't want to risk you crossing over to the other side."

Darian nodded, understanding. Rhea had already mentioned some rules before and made it clear what kind of punishment awaited those who broke them.

He had to always be cautious. Any mistake wouldn't fall directly on him, since the Empire wouldn't want to lose a High Human by imprisoning or killing him. Instead, they would go after the common people connected to him first.

With both of them inside, Darian simply informed the artificial intelligence of the name of the Mortal City where he and his siblings lived. The city was in the far northeast of the capital, near the sea, the closest location to the Aeternum Atlantis Empire, where his father had been born.

Rhea sighed silently as the plane accelerated. A city like that certainly had a strong underworld presence. The lives of common people there must have been extremely harsh.

In less than ten minutes, they arrived at their destination.

The plane landed in a nearby area and remained there. A defense system was activated; if someone tried anything, the artificial intelligence would detect it and could react lethally.

However, Rhea configured the system to only fire into the air, so both of them would be alerted.

With the scarcity of people on Earth today, artificial intelligence had taken over most functions, evolving significantly. In terms of technology, this was probably the only major advancement since the 21st century.

Rhea put on a cloak over her flashy clothes, and together, they entered the city.

She found everything quite simple, but not as poor as... until Darian took a detour, and they reached the decaying outskirts of the place.

Ever since Darian's father died, they had lived there, as it was all his mother could afford. Darian had no memories of that period, but his mother had mentioned before that they used to live in another city and had a completely different life.

His mother had a relatively rare job, working in the richest part of the city where someone from the Empire resided. However, she had no connections to protect herself. Her salary was minimal, almost like scraps thrown to beggars.

Through the power of the ring, Darian learned, from that first training session, how to mentally connect with another person and communicate telepathically. So, he explained all this to Rhea mentally.

He knew he could trust her. He could see that her karma was so pure it was unbelievable. And besides, she had no obligation to accompany him and guide him through everything he needed. She was wasting her time because she genuinely wanted to help him as much as possible. Her only duty was to take him to his clan and train him for the future mission.

Darian just omitted the tragic end of his mother. But he didn't need to say it—it was pretty obvious. Rhea already knew that it was just him and his siblings, with no mother.

Finally, they arrived at a very small and very old house.

Darian sighed and stepped forward, opening the door.

As soon as he entered, he saw something terrifying...

His eyes widened, and his heart raced.

The scene was clear as day. There were signs of a struggle, several things broken and overturned.

Darian rushed inside in desperation. He ran through both bedrooms, the bathroom—no one was there. But... all the few old pieces of furniture were knocked over, broken, or thrown open.

Rhea was right behind him, distressed at the sight of everything.

Darian didn't say a word. His mind raced, and he bolted out of the house.

Nearby, there was another house, almost identical.

*BANG!*

Darian had only meant to punch the door, but strangely, with just a bit of his strength, it completely exploded.

Inside, an old woman's eyes went wide in shock.

"WHAT HAPPENED TO LUCY AND LUCIUS?!"

Darian's voice roared like a furious beast, loud and filled with rage. His red eyes shone with a murderous glow, and the terrifying aura of a High Human burst forth, slamming into the old woman like a hammer.

"T-They... ten days ago..." She stammered, speaking in sheer panic. "Those filthy men..."

"UNDERWORLD!" Darian cut her off and spun around, storming out of the house.

He didn't look back. His steps immediately aimed in one direction—toward a nearby abandoned city. If he ran at full speed, he estimated he'd get there in an hour.

Then he felt his body halt.

He turned around.

A hand gripped his shoulder, holding him in place.

"Where are you going?" Rhea stared into his eyes.

"I'm going to save them, obviously. They took them because of me. They won't kill them—they want to use them to get to me. It's only been ten days... They must be alive..." Darian spoke coldly, but in the end, his eyes glistened with unshed tears at the thought of what his siblings were going through because of him.

"You can't go."

He heard those words, and his eyes widened as he stared at her. "What?"

"They're ordinary humans. If you go alone and use your power, it'll be the same as exposing your existence." Rhea explained.

"I won't expose anything. I swear none of them will leave that place alive." His voice dripped with hatred.

She scoffed. "Yeah, but your siblings will leave alive. Even if they're asleep and see nothing, how do you plan to explain, in a way that makes sense, that you—alone—broke in and saved them? This might seem small, but it's a violation of the rules. It won't be the Empire punishing you for it. All the power inside you will erupt and kill you..."

"Fuck that." Darian didn't care. He moved his hand, pushing hers off his shoulder. "I can die later, but I'm getting them out of there."
