Chapter 30 - Two Sides

Rhea watched Darian's back as he walked away and sighed heavily. She felt a certain relief—she'd really be disappointed if he chose to ignore everything just to avoid taking risks. At the same time, she knew the situation wasn't simple.

She quickly moved to catch up with him. "Why are you running? Just use the plane."

Darian stopped. He really wasn't thinking straight, overwhelmed by rage and the urgency to save both of them. During the tough time at the Abyssal Nest, he always stayed calm, thinking clearly... or almost always. Maybe it was because he felt he could do anything as long as his partner was by his side—he just needed to find a way.

Within a few minutes, the two of them turned around, left the city, and boarded the plane.

Darian entered the coordinates; they'd arrive in just a few minutes.

"In my clan, we have an item kept for emergencies. It's used when we have to do something with the risk of common humans finding us. Of course, it has limits, but it completely erases people's memories," Rhea said seriously. "I'm going to send a message for someone to bring it quickly."

Darian already knew that the punishment for a revelation was something you couldn't escape. But if the bearer had something to reverse the situation and was mentally willing to use it, their power wouldn't blow up immediately. It was the user's mind that kept that rule in check.

"Does it have any side effects?" Darian asked dryly, looking ahead in the plane, anxious to get there.

Rhea said seriously, "The item is a light that can be directed. It can completely erase several months—or even a few years—of recent memories. Unfortunately, it's pretty random, almost impossible to control. But that..."

"Shit... How am I supposed to do that?" Darian clenched his fists hard. "They're only 13 years old. This could permanently delete years of their important childhood memories! What if it erases their final memories of our mother? They might not even know she died and have to go through mourning all over again..."

Rhea listened and could only sigh. Indeed, even the minimum loss of memories would be a huge deal. But there was no other choice than to take the risk.

Less than five minutes later, the plane arrived near a small abandoned town.

Most of the few large buildings in the area had crumbled over centuries of abandonment. Only one five-story building was still standing, almost in the center of town.

As soon as they landed, the doors opened, and Darian jumped out.

He looked at the horizon. It was early morning, but a storm with lightning covered the skies right above that town, making everything very dark and gloomy. He took a deep breath, trying to focus.

"In the central area... there are 32 people... are they all inside the building?" Rhea asked beside him, her eyes radiating a yellow aura.

She could only sense the cluster of living people. Then she focused on the central building, using her power to the max to pick up something more.

Suddenly... her eyes went wide.

"What?!"

Darian turned to her, startled.

"What the hell..."

*BOOOM!!*

Both of them turned toward the building, which was far away but the tallest and most visible. At the top, the glass windows exploded violently. Then, a loud noise echoed from inside the building, reverberating strongly.

From the broken window openings, an intense bluish light burst out, like a beacon in the midst of the storm's darkness.

"Your brothers are in danger!!" Rhea exclaimed, tense. "This is the power of a legendary awakening. It can't happen in front of common humans, or the same rules that keep us from revealing ourselves will apply. Someone started the awakening and, once it finishes, they'll blow up—and everything will be destroyed over a huge area."

"How can this even happen?" Darian said, desperate.

"In almost every case, it happens very subtly, so that no one notices. But this awakening is big and rare." Rhea thought quickly, and her wings emerged from her back. "We can't wait."

She grabbed his arm and flew straight to the center of town, toward that building still radiating light.

Once they arrived, she flew to the top and flapped her wings. Her body began to radiate a dense yellow aura that quickly covered the entire building.

"The awakening is still happening and the people inside have no idea what's going on. It usually lasts just a few seconds, but this awakening is unpredictable; whoever's awakening could stabilize at any moment. I'm going to affect everyone in the building with my power—that'll confuse them even more and delay the detonation. I can only maintain it for five minutes, so you have to go in and rescue your brothers in time."

She spoke and then let Darian go onto the building's balcony.

He didn't waste any time. With a deep breath, a reddish aura flared around him. Using that power from his ring, he could see through the intense light, feel the people around him, and even pinpoint where the epicenter was.

Fortunately, that initial training with Rhea was done, and he'd already learned to use it. After that, she just laid out, in theory, what could be done. Darian managed to replicate parts of it without any trouble—it wasn't so complex that it required a lot of practice.

On the balcony, there was a staircase, and he rushed down at full speed.

Luckily, everything seemed to be happening on the top floor.

He spotted a door and kicked it hard, causing it to explode.

Once he stepped in, he froze, his eyes wide open.

"Lucy... Lucius..."

Darian saw his little siblings... extremely thin and dirty... but, surprisingly, both were floating a few centimeters off the ground, their hands tightly intertwined.

Their bodies looked like two suns, radiating an intense blue light.

"It was both of them... who woke up..." he murmured, speechless as he watched the scene.

Then he noticed four people lying around. They were trembling, as if an invisible, suppressive force was weighing on them. A yellowish glow blended into the surroundings, intensifying that feeling.

Darian narrowed his eyes. Rhea hadn't known who'd awakened, so she'd told him to go in and rescue his siblings quickly. But if they were responsible for the awakening, there was no point trying to save them.

These people had already witnessed the phenomena, and the two would blow up anyway.

"Great... nothing's changed; it just made me even more motivated." A bloody light shone in his red eyes.

That also meant that his siblings knowing about superpowers wouldn't be a problem anymore, since they'd awakened too. So now, the only obstacle was...

Darian charged into the place and then saw several blades, chains, and torture tools scattered around. It was clear this wasn't a place where his siblings were being well cared for.

"Fucking bastards!" he roared, grabbing two blades. Then he turned on the fallen people, showing no mercy.

There wasn't any time to waste. He attacked one of them directly in the chest, brutally piercing her heart.

She was a woman—the only one there—and the one whose karma Darian sensed was especially heavy. He attacked her from behind while she was lying on the ground; a muffled scream of agony echoed, then faded away.

Darian took a deep breath, absorbing a dense, foul energy. Now, he had his power back.

Moving his hand, the blade became covered in a black aura.

*Slash!*

With a smooth motion, he sliced one enemy's body in half with a blade a bit bigger than a kitchen knife.

In just seconds, he eliminated everyone there and absorbed each one's karma.

"28 left," he murmured, turning and leaving the room.

Using his power, he could sense exactly where everyone was. Darian practically jumped down the stairs without hesitating. He had white power for healing now, but he soon realized he didn't even need it—his enhanced body could take that level of impact without breaking his bones.

*Slash!*

In one room, he found five people.

*Slash!*

In another, four.

Three minutes passed and the light of the awakening began to fade slowly. At the same time...

*Slash!*

*Slash!*

*Slash!*

A bloodbath unfolded, fueled by the fury of a killer thirsty for hate.

That building had been abandoned long ago. With five floors, it was a temporary shelter, and only two areas on each floor had been restored, occupied by several people together.

With everyone down and paralyzed, and thanks to his enhanced physique, Darian cleared each floor in less than a minute.

When it was all over, Rhea was exhausted, out of energy and tense, not knowing why Darian hadn't left yet.

She climbed in through the top-floor window...

And saw the floor covered in blood and entrails.

The sound of footsteps approaching the door echoed. He turned and stared at her.

His red eyes radiated a cold, bloody intensity.

But then, with a quick move, he approached the two at the center.

Both were soundly asleep on the floor, still holding each other's hands. When Darian supported them, he saw their eyes tremble.

"I'm back... sleep, everything's gonna be alright," he murmured softly.

Soon, both relaxed completely.

Rhea swallowed hard. Just a little while ago, he'd seemed like a complete maniac. Now, he exuded an immense sense of calm and affection... Which side of him is really him?
