Chapter 298: The Song

"Oooh," I smiled as I looked at the ball of lightning in my hand. It was sparking furiously as if it was connected to my teammate’s feelings. "So pretty. Thank you for the gift!"

Clenching my open hand into a fist, I continued to stare the woman down as I obliterated the sphere. "Want me to tell you a secret?" I joked, leaning forward enough to be able to smell the perfume coming off her.

"That’s impossible," grunted one of the men, looking at me in fear as he retreated away from the snake in front of him. "Lightning is one of the strongest, next to spirit. No one, not even another lightning user, can do that."

"Look at you," I purred at him, taking my attention away from my prey for a second as I addressed him. "You get a gold star for being so smart. Why don’t you tell the rest of the class why you are looking at me like I am a monster?"

"You’re not a dud," he whispered, his voice trembling. "You are immune to powers. The reader couldn’t read you, so he said you were a dud. Evelyn’s powers couldn’t hurt you because they can’t. You held lightning, and it didn’t hurt you at all."

"You know," I paused for a moment, looking at my teammate. "You are actually smart. That’s good. You should be able to live a long and happy life."

"Miles," blushed the man. "I’m Miles, she is Evelyn, that’s Logan, and he’s David. We’ve all been here for a few years now. You are the first newcomer that has been placed on our team."

Happy that someone finally told me some names, I couldn’t help but smile. "I’m Lucy," I said, introducing myself.

"Yeah, we got that," sneered Evelyn as she looked me up and down. "We are going to have to report your behavior to Jonas. You will be deducted your meal for tonight... just to let you know."

Nodding my head, I looked over at her. "Of course, as long as you include in your report that you tried to kill me with a ball of lightning. After all, it’s not fair if you only pick and choose what to include."

Evelyn was about to reply when Tank let out a long howl, alerting me to something going on.

"Ooh, new toy to play with," I squealed, rushing past the rest of my team to get to Tank before my hound could take it out. "I’ll see you over there!"

"Wait!" called out Miles. "We have to report it first!"

"Okay!" I called back, still racing forward. "You report, I’ll go play."

"She is fucking crazy," grunted one of the other guys, but I really didn’t care enough to check and see who it was.

"Yeah," grunted Evelyn, "it almost makes me like her."

It only took me a matter of minutes to get to where Tank was standing, and I looked around to see what had set him off.

"What’s going on, boy?" I asked, walking over to him. He snarled and looked down at his feet.

Following his gaze, I saw the young man lying on the ground, his face white as he stared at the long teeth just above his head.

"Please," he panted, his eyes completely white from fear. "Please, just let me go. Pretend that you didn’t see me, but you can’t take me back there!"

"Back where?" I asked, crouching down beside the man. "Just what are you running from? After all, this place is paradise. Only an idiot would want to leave it. Are you an idiot?"

"It’s not paradise," hissed the man, his anger momentarily overcoming his fear of Tank. "It might look that way on top, but the core is completely rotten. I questioned my leader a few times when I didn’t agree, and they sent me to the research side of the compound."

His breaths were coming out fast as he rushed to convince me to let him go. "Adam is experimenting on us. He thinks he has the cure... he tells everyone that he has the cure, but he doesn’t. All he knows is—"

His words were quickly cut off by the giant knife in his head.

Huh, that would have had to be a good throw to lodge itself like it had. And the knife didn’t touch Tank at all.

"What did he tell you?" demanded Jonas as he strolled toward me, his face a mask as he picked up his pace. "Did he speak?"

"He was trying to," I replied, rising to my feet and brushing off my pants. "But I guess Tank is a little terrifying when he is standing over top of someone. I mean, his lips were moving, but it was like he was scared mute."

Jonas conjured another knife in his hands as he came to a stop beside me. "You weren’t supposed to approach. The rules are that you make a report, and those who are qualified will respond to it."

"That seems a bit pointless," I smiled at him. "I mean, by the time you had gotten your ass over here, buddy would have already been on the other side of the wall by now."

"Not possible," replied Jonas as Tank stepped back, exposing the rest of the man’s body. His skin was already turning a light shade of blue, but that should have been impossible. He hadn’t been dead long enough for the discoloration to have started. "There is no way over the wall."

"You clearly didn’t pay attention to the song," I sighed, waving my hand in the air.

"What song?" demanded one of the guys from my team. I think it was Logan, but I couldn’t be sure without another couple of introductions.

"Going on a bear hunt," I answered him. Of course, everyone was now looking at me like I was crazy, but how did they not understand?

"That’s a kid’s song," said Evelyn, her eyes narrowing on my face.

"Uh-huh," I agreed. "Can’t go over it," I started, pointing at the top of the wall. "Can’t go through it." I continued, pointing at the middle of the wall. "Need to go under it," I finished, pointing at where there was a bunch of bushes at the base of the wall."
