Chapter 106: The Downfall
"Milan, don’t be shy about asking me anything if you’re curious about what I just said," Abigail said as she calmly sipped her warm tea. "And you should try their tea, too; it tastes unforgettable and relaxing, and you would want to come again for a sip or two," she added.
After immersing herself while finishing her tea and looking more relaxed, Milan finally asked, "You mentioned celebrating two things? What are they?"
Abigail smiled before responding, "First, we celebrate the downfall of that vile Ryland’s company, Urbangrid Renovation. And second, we are celebrating your new position at my company—"
Milan’s relaxed eyes now widened in shock, and she excitedly smiled upon hearing Abigail’s words.
"A-Abigail, what did you just say?" Milan gasped in shock at Abigail’s unexpected announcement.
"I know you clearly hear me, Milan. My very own architect and design company! And yes, yes, it’s true," Abigail replied with a smile, clearly enjoying Milan’s shockness.
A tense silence hung in the air as Milan struggled to comprehend what she had just heard. It was hard for her to believe that Abigail could have built the company from scratch.
Even though Abigail plays a vital role as Urbangrid’s leading designer, consistently bringing innovative and exciting projects to the company, she has little knowledge of company management. Most importantly, she lacks financial assets. How could she possibly build a company without any money?
’She must be joking, right?’ Milan thought as she watched Abigail’s calm demeanor, which only made her more confused. ’Oh my gosh... is she serious?’
"Wait, Abigail, are you really planning to start your own company? Since when? How are you going to do that?" Milan expressed her thoughts.
"Yes, I am. It’s been on my plan for a while. Now, I have investors who trust me to build my architecture and design studio. While I can’t share the details just yet, as we are still in the planning stages, I am certain that I want to recruit you as my first staff member."
Abigail paused, smiling at Milan’s surprised reaction.
She continued, "Milan, if you agree to join my company, you will become my assistant. I will discuss the specifics of your job description and salary with you professionally later at the new office."
Abigail confidently extended the offer to Milan even though she didn’t know when her company would start or where it would be located. She trusted Sawyer because he had more business experience and was eager to help her establish the company.
"Are you willing to join me, Milan?" Abigail asked again.
"Yes, of course, I will join you, Boss Abigail," Milan hurriedly confirmed, her eyes sparkling excitedly. "I don’t care how much you pay me as long as I get to work with you to build your company. So yes, I will join!"
A few days ago, she started looking for a new job after Ryland forced her to resign a month ago. However, after sending out numerous applications, she did not receive any calls, and she began to suspect that Ryland had blocked her from applying to several companies.
Abigail smiled as she stood up and extended her hand for a handshake with Milan. "Welcome to Camellia Modern Design, Milan. We will discuss other matters later when my office is set up."
As Milan firmly accepted Abigail’s handshake, she felt overwhelmed with emotion. She was touched to have finally found another job and to now work alongside Abigail.
"Thank you, Boss! I will work hard to help Camellia Modern Design grow and surpass Urbangrid Innovation!" Milan’s eyes flashed angrily as she remembered how Ryland had kicked her out of the company. One thing she truly wanted to witness was the downfall of Ryland’s company.
Abigail was amused by how excited Milan was. She gestured for her to take a seat again.
Later, they began to enjoy the fresh Japanese dishes of various kinds the waitress had just served them.
As they enjoyed their lunch, Milan mentioned Urbangrid Innovation and asked Abigail about her honest feelings about the company’s downfall.
"Abigail, Well... I know... Urbangrid Innovation struggled after Andy Bennet canceled the contract, but they continued to operate. How certain are you about this?" Milan asked curiously.
"Do you believe me if I say I just guessed it?" Abigail casually responded; however, Milan burst out laughing while nodding. She continued, "I’m serious, Milan. Alright, let’s celebrate their downfall in advance." She smiled, thinking about how messy Urbangrid Innovation was now.
Abigail could imagine that Ryland would be furious about the company’s financial loss. She hoped he would vent his frustrations to her younger sister, Vanessa. She deserved to see how Ryland looked when he was at his lowest point; perhaps her little sister would choose to run away from him.
"What’s the latest news you’ve heard from them?" Milan asked again, pulling Abigail from her thoughts.
With a faint smile, she looked at Milan and replied, "I haven’t heard anything new about them. The last time I met Ryland was at the Century Hotel. I mentioned that to you before, right? It was the same day we met Andy Bennet."
"Oh yeah, I remember," Milan said.
"I know they won’t win any major project offers with their architect now. I know how poorly they are doing, which is why I believe they will face financial problems in the future..." Abigail recalled how Ryland had begged her to meet Andy Bennet, telling her that the company’s future depended on that project.
Milan smiled and nodded in agreement with Abigail. She sipped her warm tea before saying, "Well, you’re right, Abigail. The latest gossip I hear is that the marketing department is struggling to secure new projects. They can only maintain the ongoing projects. You can imagine that the company could go bankrupt if they don’t have new work."
"Hmm, they will surely go bankrupt in no time," Abigail said faintly, a deep concern weighing on her. She feared that many of her former coworkers would lose their jobs.
At first, she worried about them, but after what she had experienced, she tried not to dwell on their situation. She believed that if their door closed at Urbangrid Innovation, they could find new opportunities elsewhere right?
All that Abigail could do now was create new opportunities and hire a few capable individuals from Urbangrid Innovation to join her own new business.
