Vanessa Snow paced in front of Ryland’s office, feeling unusually nervous about entering after officially taking over Milan’s position as his secretary.
Since morning, Ryland has scolded everyone who came in for their weekly reports, including the marketing manager, the financial manager, and even the architect team.
Vanessa’s anxiety grew after Ryland had asked her multiple times to connect him to several clients. All she could hear inside the office was the sound of objects being slammed down. He is definitely in a bad mood now.
The company’s situation has been very dire lately. Each day, when they returned home, Ryland was no longer the warm and passionate person he used to be. In recent days, he hadn’t even touched her.
Whenever she tried to seduce him, he would decline with responses like, "I’m too tired, Vanessa!" or, "Can we please wait a little longer? I’m worried something might happen to the baby..."
She found Ryland’s reasons unreasonable, but she couldn’t force him to change because she understood that the stress of the company’s troubles had significantly impacted his emotions.
Vanessa paused before the door, taking a few deep breaths to prepare herself for what was inside. She needed to remind Ryland that it was past lunchtime and she was starving.
After knocking twice without an answer, she opened the door and found Ryland sitting in his chair, leaning back against the CEO’s chair with his eyes closed. He appeared to be asleep.
Seeing him looking relaxed relieved her; the angry lines on his face had faded, leaving only signs of tiredness.
As she walked closer to his chair, Vanessa gently touched his shoulder and shook him awake.
"Ryland, you need to wake up now," she said with a smile as he finally opened his eyes and stared at her. "It’s lunchtime! We need to go for lunch. I’m so hungry..."
When she saw Ryland’s unusually sharp gaze, Vanessa’s smile slowly disappeared. For the first time, she shuddered, looking at his annoyed expression. This was not the first time he had shown her his rudeness; she had tried to ignore it all this time.
But now? When she is hungry, this man looks at her like she is his other marketing staff—stupid and incapable. She can’t take it anymore.
Still, before Vanessa could voice her protest against his attitude, Ryland stood up from his chair, avoiding eye contact with her as he said in his icy tone, "I’m not hungry. Eat alone. I need to go to my meeting in a few minutes..."
He walks toward the seating area and slams himself to rest there.
Vanessa was speechless. She took a deep sigh as she looked at him in annoyance.
After feeling slightly better suppressing her anger, Vanessa follows him.
"Ryland? I know you’re busy, but you need to eat. Besides, I feel uncomfortable eating alone in the canteen or a restaurant. I would like you to have lunch with me—" Her sentence trailed off when Ryland shot her an icy glare.
"Damn it, Vanessa! Can you be more independent? Why have you become so needy and clingy since you started dating me? Everything you do has to involve me?" Ryland said in a low tone, but his expression clearly showed his disdain.
Vanessa clenched her hand tightly as she sat beside him, returning his sharp gaze with tear-filled eyes.
"Ryland? What do you mean? How could you say that? Why did you say that? I never changed; this has been my attitude and character for a long time, and you said you love me for what I am, not that bitch of a sister of mine!" she protested, annoyed.
"Oh, you want to talk about Abigail, now? Alright. Do you know what makes Abigail different from you?! When I was with her, she was independent and mature. She never acted clingy or needy around me." Ryland sighed deeply before continuing, "Please, Vanessa, can you try to be as mature as your sister?"
"Ryland Wood! Why did you mention her name? I don’t even say that bitch’s name!" Vanessa’s voice trembled, too angry to hear Ryland compare her to Abigail. "How dare you compare me to her? Have you forgotten how you said you hated her?!"
Her face flushed red as if all the blood had rushed to her cheeks; she was utterly furious and felt humiliated.
This was the first time she had heard Ryland compare her negatively to Abigail. In the past, he had always praised and flattered her, considering Abigail was a woman with narrow thoughts who always acted like an old person, a dull woman.
Vanessa felt her breath fall short as she struggled to hold back her tears while waiting for Ryland’s answer.
Ryland looked away, annoyed to see Vanessa’s expression, which annoyed him even more. After what happened at the company, this woman couldn’t help him at all. Instead, she added to his burden, to his stress.
In the last few days, Ryland has begun to regret breaking up with Abigail after learning how precious she was to him.
In his mind now, Abigail is a precious gem, while Vanessa is an invaluable gem; they can’t be compared.
Abigail is the one who can complete him, but he is too blinded by his lust, and he ruins everything. He is too foolish to throw away the precious gem he has. And now, he is stuck with this clingy woman.
After a few moments in silence, Ryland finally answered her carelessly, "I’m not comparing you to Abigail. But I’m telling the truth, Vanessa. Your sister never once upset me when the company was having serious problems," He returned his gaze to her.
He was stressed when he saw her on the verge of tears again. He can’t help but compare her with Abigail. He couldn’t recall seeing Abigail cry during their arguments, whether about work or something else. But this woman? She was about to cry again.
’Damn it! This woman always cries whenever she wants something! I can’t believe I’ve fallen for someone like her!’ Ryland mentally cursed himself.
"Vanessa, listen... Your sister, Abigail, always helps me find solutions. She’s always there when the company is nearing a crisis. But you? What do you do? You only think about yourself. All you do is cry!"
He paused, taking a deep sigh.
"If your sister was here, she would have bought me lunch and insisted I eat with her. But you? You’re just adding to my burden by wanting me to take you out to eat. How can I not compare you to her? Especially nowadays!"
Ryland took a deep breath and glanced at Vanessa, who was sobbing beside him. He was left speechless.
’God! I’m sorry if I’ve ruined my life and my future because of my greed. Can you send me back to the time before I met this woman? Please give me one more chance to return to Abigail. I need her now; she’s the only one who truly fits me, who can complete me.’
With that thought, Ryland leaned back on the sofa, staring at the ceiling. He covered his eyes with his arm, trying to block out Vanessa’s loud sobbing.
