Chapter 197: Wedding Day (1)
Hannah was silent for a moment, feeling uneasy as she digested her son’s words.
"My son, why are you hiding your wedding from everyone? Even from your family? This is nothing but good news. You can let your family know if you don’t want the public to know. We should announce it with your brother and sister and celebrate together. Don’t you think so?" she asked, clearly confused.
Sawyer couldn’t help but take a deep breath. There is only one reason for him not to let his family know. His parents know. He didn’t want to inform his parents because he didn’t trust them to keep the news secret from others. Now, he worried that information about his wedding with Abigail would end up on social media or in the news.
Even though he had never publicly identified himself as Walter Jones’s youngest son, the media would be eager to write a story about him.
The thought that his brother Harvey and sister Angela might be angry with him for getting married before them was starting to give him a headache.
Sawyer sighed deeply, running one hand behind his neck to ease the tension in his head.
"Mom, seriously, do you want me to announce my wedding ceremony?" he asked gently, tightening his grip on the cell phone.
"Of course, dear! I want my son to have a grand wedding, and I want people to know that you are part of the Jones family, too," Hannah replied proudly, causing Sawyer to flash a sour smile. freeωebnovēl.c૦m
"If you want me to announce my wedding to everyone and wish for a grand celebration, I believe you’ll regret it later."
"Huh!? Regret? Of course not! I will be so happy..." Hannah chuckled, amused by her stubborn son. "Sawyer, you’re overthinking, dear. I promise you, I won’t regret it..."
Sawyer shook his head, laughing inwardly as he responded, "Mom, you probably won’t come to my wedding if you go through with the announcement."
"Wh-what? What do you mean? You won’t invite me?" Hannah panicked, unable to imagine her son not allowing her to attend his wedding.
"I will invite you, but you still won’t be able to enter the wedding venue. Did you forget who my mother is on paper?" Sawyer smiled at the sound of his mother cursing from the other end of the line.
"She won’t allow you to appear, Mom. And if you insist, she might humiliate you in public. How could I let that happen?" he continued in an annoyed but gentle tone.
Instantly, Hannah felt as if half of her soul had left her body as she understood what her son was trying to convey.
Silence.
No one said anything. Not even a breath could be heard.
Sawyer let his mother sort out her feelings. He knew she must be sad and upset, but she didn’t know how to express it.
After some time, Hannah finally broke the silence, saying, "My son, thank you for reminding me. Alright, I will tell your father. Don’t worry; I will ensure no one knows about your wedding."
Hannah felt grateful to know why her son didn’t want the wedding to be exposed. That was the only reason he wanted to protect her from other people. She hated herself because she didn’t think that far.
However, something still bothered Hannah’s mind with this sudden wedding. It made her curious.
"Sawyer, is Abigail pregnant? Is that why you guys got married suddenly?" Hannah asked excitedly. She hoped to have a grandchild from Sawyer and Abigail sooner. She was afraid her cancer would get worse.
Sawyer nearly coughed at his mother’s question. The idea of having a child with Abigail was something he desired, too. However, for the past few months, he had fought his feelings to be intimate with her because he had promised to honor her.
He glanced back briefly at Abigail, still lying on the bed. However, her eyes were wide open, and she looked at him. From the expression in Abigail’s eyes, Sawyer could sense her worry and guilt.
A loving smile slowly spread across Sawyer’s lips as he tried to ease her concerns before turning his gaze back to the backyard.
"Mom, my marriage to Abigail wasn’t sudden. We discussed it long ago and planned to get married this year. Today is the day we chose," Sawyer explained patiently. If only Abigail had agreed to register their marriage under her old name, perhaps they could have been married last month.
Not wanting to continue the conversation with his mother, Sawyer quickly excused himself and ended the call.
...
Sawyer’s lips curved into a warm smile as he approached the bed. His eyes remained focused on Abigail, who was sitting on the edge of the bed, anxiety, and guilt clearly radiating from her beautiful gray eyes.
"Why aren’t you sleeping?" Sawyer gently asked as he sat beside her.
"I’m not sleepy at all."
He placed her cell phone on the nightstand and gently took her tightly clenched hands.
Feeling the coldness of her hands worried him. He tried to comfort her, saying, "It seems like something is bothering my little wife. Are you nervous that we will spend our wedding night together in just a few hours?"
Abigail’s face warmed. She didn’t want to engage in his teasing about their wedding night, so she ignored his words.
"Ugh... I’m not nervous. I just feel bad because I called your mother without telling you first. I was worried you would disagree about inviting them to our wedding, so—"
Sawyer placed his index finger on her lips to stop her from continuing her words. "Abby, please don’t feel that way, okay?" He chuckled softly, noticing her shoulders slump slightly. Then he continued, "Actually, I planned to call them after breakfast."
"Seriously?" she asked, her eyes widening.
"Hmm..." He hummed while brushing back the messy hair from her forehead, returning his loving gaze to meet her eyes.
Seeing the relieved smile on her lips, he added, "I’m glad you texted her because I forgot my mother needed more time to doll herself up before coming to our wedding. So thank you, dear, for helping me out."
Abigail said nothing but smiled, hearing his words.
"Are you feeling better now?" he asked.
"Yes. When you talked to your mom earlier, I worried I had overstepped. I didn’t want to interfere with your family’s matters..." Abigail was being completely honest with him. She didn’t want Sawyer to think poorly of her, especially on their first day as husband and wife.
"You shouldn’t worry, dear. As my wife, that’s your first task—to do whatever you want. I will support you and allow you to pursue anything you wish. Including fixing my relationship with my parents..."
"Y-You know?"
Sawyer didn’t reply; instead, he leaned closer and kissed Abigail right between her eyebrows.
