Daily Life in the 70s-Chapter 70 - Marriage
70: Chapter 70 Marriage
70 -70 Marriage
“The bride has returned!”
“What a beautiful bride!”
Just getting off the carriage, the enthusiastic crowd immediately gathered around to watch.
The women of the Shen family had been waiting on the side early on, also afraid that the bride might not be able to withstand the teasing and quickly surrounded them to enter the Shen household.
It’s quite lively, it seems the Shen family invited quite a few people over for the feast.
Then she saw Pan Shuiqin, smiling and coming up to her, winking.
Yang Peimin saw the full teasing in her eyes.
That made her cheeks flush, clearly teasing her about what she had said last time about having no relation with Shen Yiguang.
First they entered the main house, bowed to the parents, offered tea, and then Shen Erniu and his wife handed over the red envelopes for the ‘name change fee’.
Then, in tacit agreement, all the relatives and friends chanted: may you have a child soon!
The scene could be called magnificent, these generous relatives and friends completely ignored Shen Yiguang’s earlier warnings.
Yang Peimin’s cheeks were slightly flushed.
Shen Yiguang glanced over the crowd and laughed, “Everyone, please take your seats, stop yelling.”
There were still some who fearless enough to start whistling.
But most knew when to call it quits.
Next, Shen Yiguang needed to entertain the guests, while Yang Peimin went to the room to get ready first, and then went out later to meet people.
The bridal room was the first room in the western wing, tidy, simple, and bright; the two brand new silk quilts from her dowry were neatly folded on the k’ang, the red lacquered wardrobe was quite conspicuous on the right side, and there was a small table in the middle, as well as a simple wooden vanity.
Then, just as her elder sister-in-law had said, there were blue curtains hanging at the window.
Shen Yixia followed her in, “They’re about to start the feast outside, I’ve brought some food in to fill your stomach.”
Yang Peimin thanked her.
Shen Yixia laughed heartily, “Why the formality?
We’re all family here.
Yiguang gave me strict instructions, what would you like to eat?
Dumplings, noodles, rice, we have it all.”
“Noodles will do.”
Just then, a daughter-in-law came in, heard the conversation, and volunteered to go out and help bring it.
At this moment, the room was crowded with quite a few people, all women and children.
Shen Yixia introduced her, “Our family has seven brothers and sisters, Yiguang is the fifth, I’m the second sister, we met before, let me introduce you to the other sisters.”
The older sisters who were busy outside knew the bride had returned to the room and also hurried over to meet her, so it would be easier to talk later.

Yang Peimin was also a bit curious; Shen Yiguang’s family was a typical case of strong women and weak men, but he was very decisive, and she wondered if his sisters were like him.
The eldest sister, Shen Yichun looked honest and straightforward, not the talkative type, but her face wore a friendly smile, which was very endearing.
The second and third sisters seemed cheerful, while the fourth sister, Shen Yidong, had a somewhat critical look, her smile not reaching her eyes, as she sat on her wedding bed with a four or five-month pregnant belly, “I hope my little sister-in-law can give our parents a grandson soon.”
Sister Shen Yiyue and Shen Yixiang were twins, they looked very similar, but their temperaments were distinct, Shen Yiyue appeared gentle and calm, with a serene smile.
Shen Yixiang seemed even more disapproving than Shen Yidong, arching her eyebrows as she kept sizing her up, not even calling her sister-in-law, obviously a difficult personality.
“She looks so delicate, seems like she can’t do much work,” Shen Yixiang sneered disdainfully.
Second sister quickly pulled her aside, glaring at this thoughtless younger sister, “What are you talking about?
Everyone, please leave, there’s a lot to do outside.”
Yang Peimin didn’t mind, pretending she hadn’t heard.
After a few words from her sisters, they all left, taking the watching crowd with them.
The sister-in-law who delivered the noodles soon brought them in, smiling at her, “There was some braised pork just out of the kitchen, I got you a few pieces, really fatty, from our own home-raised pig, try it!”
Yang Peimin hurriedly took it, “Thank you, sister-in-law, I don’t even know how to address you?”
“Just call me Sister-in-law Shuxin.
My man and yours are cousins.
Go ahead and eat while it’s hot,” Sister-in-law Shuxin said as she covertly took several glances at her.
She was indeed beautiful; no wonder Shen Yiguang, with his high standards, was attracted to her.
“I need to step out for a bit, just holler if you need anything.”
“Sure, go ahead, you’ve worked hard today.”
Sister-in-law Shuxin laughed heartily, clearly pleased to be acknowledged, “Work hard?
We’re all family here.
Nothing hard about that.”
“What are you laughing about, so cheerfully?” Shen Yiguang walked in, directing his gaze at Yang Peimin’s face.
Sister-in-law Shuxin teased with a smile, “Just talking about you, saying how fortunate you are to have married such a beautiful and generous girl.”
“Thank you, Sister-in-law.”
“Wow, you’re quick to respond.
Alright, I’ll leave you two alone; I have to go keep watch.”
She even made sure to close the door behind her.
Shen Yiguang sat in the chair next to her and glanced at the noodles on the table, “Hungry, huh?
Eat up while it’s hot.”
Yang Peimin stirred the noodles with her chopsticks, revealing the fattest chunks of bright red pork on top, and frowned.
“What’s wrong?”
“The meat is too fatty; I can’t eat it.” She could manage meat that was half-fat, half-lean, but this was almost entirely fat and beyond what she could stomach.
She knew that people nowadays craved fats and that fatty meat sold for more than lean; showing hospitality meant offering the fattier cuts as a sign of respect.
But if she left it uneaten, she would be criticized for wasting food.
“Do you prefer lean meat?”
Yang Peimin nodded.
“Then bite off the lean parts, and I’ll eat the fat,” Shen Yiguang suggested.
Yang Peimin looked up at him; Shen Yiguang watched her back with a gentle smile in his eyes.
Then her cheeks flushed.
Wasn’t this indirectly like kissing?
“They’ll be coming in to call us soon; let’s eat quickly, the noodles will go soggy.” He paused, then added, “We’re husband and wife now, what does it matter?”
Well, if he didn’t mind, why should she?
Yang Peimin bit off the lean pieces and then placed the fatty ones into his mouth.
He managed not to get his lips on the chopsticks and looked utterly content while eating.
It was a bit embarrassing to watch.
After eating about half a bowl, Yang Peimin was full, and Shen Yiguang calmly finished the soup and noodles.
“I’ll take the bowls out,” said Yang Peimin.
“Wait a moment before doing that.
It’s rarely this quiet.
Are you thirsty?” Shen Yiguang stood up, took a new cup from the vanity, and handed it to her, “It’s been washed.”
Yang Peimin nodded.
After all this time, she really hadn’t had anything to drink; she had wanted to ask earlier.
There was a kettle in the room with water, but it was a bit too warm.
Shen Yiguang took the kettle and said, “I’ll blow on it for you.”
Yang Peimin watched him, taken aback.
Catching a moment to glance at her amidst his busyness, Shen Yiguang asked, “What’s up?
It’ll cool down soon.
I didn’t think to mix it with some cold water earlier.”
Resting her hand on her cheek, she blinked, “I was wondering, after you’ve blown your breath into it, can I still drink it?”
Shen Yiguang paused, raising an eyebrow, “Minmin, it seems you’ve forgotten something.”
“What is it?” she naively asked.
Shen Yiguang put the cup down on the table and composed himself, “Minmin.”
“What?” Yang Peimin sat up straight, her expression turning serious under the influence.
But, in the next moment, she was pulled closer, and then his lips covered hers.
