His Obsession Began After Losing Her-Chapter 47: Finally Found You
Chapter 47 - Finally Found You
Karlene and Roy stepped into the private room, the door closing softly behind them.
Karlene's eyes immediately fell on a woman dressed in expensive clothes—Anne Powell—and an older gentleman seated next to her.
The man was Adolf Clinton, one of the top lawyers in the country.
Adolf looked up, a smirk playing on his lips. "Well, well, I didn't expect Mr. Lloyd to bring the most famous newcomer to represent him. Ms. Karlene Lee, isn't it? I thought you were only into criminal cases. Didn't know you had an interest in taking up divorce settlements."
Karlene's lips curved into a sarcastic smile. "Surprises keep life interesting, Mr. Clinton. Besides, once you've proven a death row inmate innocent, everything else seems like child's play."
Adolf gritted his teeth, his frustration evident.
He never liked Karlene, the rule-breaking lawyer who always seemed to bend the system to her will.
The atmosphere grew tense as they took their seats, with Roy and Anne glaring at each other from across the table. The room was filled with a palpable sense of hostility, the air thick with unspoken accusations and lingering resentments.
Karlene was the first to break the silence. "According to this country's marriage laws, marital assets are divided equally between spouses upon divorce, and debts should be shared equally as well."
Adolf glanced at her but didn't respond, only asking, "Mr. Lloyd, do you admit to having an extramarital affair with another woman since your marriage to my client?"
Roy lounged with crossed legs and let out a chuckle. "Ha! You're accusing me of having an extramarital affair when she's the one who cheated on me?"
"Nonsense! I was pregnant with your child! And after learning that you're having an affair, I suffered a miscarriage!" Anne retorted immediately.
"Fuck! That child isn't even..."
Before Roy could finish his sentence, Karlene suddenly interrupted, "Does Ms. Powell have any evidence?"
"I saw him with a female model at a hotel!" Anne exclaimed angrily.
"Ms. Powell, didn't Mr. Clinton explain to you what qualifies as evidence?" Karlene asked with a smile, grateful that they had no evidence.
"Calling me out for seeing other women while you're keeping a gigolo around? I've lost count of how many wealthy men you've been with all these years," Roy retorted with disdain.
"It was only when I wanted to divorce you that I started..." Before she could finish her sentence, Adolf glanced at the foolish woman and immediately cut her off.
"Please present evidence before speaking," Adolf said sternly, looking rather frustrated at Anne.
After acknowledging the futility of their divorce agreement, she now admitted to maintaining a relationship with a gigolo during their marriage.
Did she attempt to divorce Roy without receiving a penny?
What Anne was about to do was absolutely foolish!
Karlene laughed inwardly, thinking Anne had almost walked into her trap if it wasn't for Adolf's interference.
"Ms. Powell, you claimed my client was the cause of your miscarriage. But from the evidence I have here, my client has been working tirelessly at his company to provide you with a better life."
Karlene leaned back, a satisfied smirk playing on her lips as she continued, "But what did you do in return? You seized a portion of his assets, causing him immense emotional stress.
This distraction made it impossible for him to focus on his work, leading to significant losses for his company. Ms. Powell, if this goes to court, you won't get a penny of the assets!"
Roy turned and looked at Karlene, his eyes widening in surprise.
Paragon had recently experienced some losses, though not significant.
Could that really be used against this?
He was astonished at how she managed to turn this around and use it as leverage.
Roy wanted to applaud Karlene, but Adolf interrupted almost immediately, "Ms Lee, this is just a speculation. How Mr. Lloyd's company experienced losses got nothing to do with my client."
Karlene's voice was firm, her argument compelling. "Given my client's significant role within the Paragon Group, any disruption in his personal life can and does ripple through to his professional responsibilities.
This isn't speculation, Mr. Clinton—it's a fact supported by evidence of the recent downturn in company performance."
Adolf clenched his jaw, his frustration evident.
This was his first time going head-to-head with Karlene, and despite her junior status, her reputation was proving well-deserved.
He had underestimated her, mistakenly thinking her lack of experience in divorce settlements would be a weakness.
Didn't the rumors suggest she was just a hot-headed, irrational attorney whose recent breakthrough was merely a stroke of luck?
Yet, here she was, holding her ground and catching him off guard with her sharp arguments. It was becoming clear that she was much more formidable than he had anticipated.
Even Roy was impressed, glancing at Karlene with newfound admiration. Watching her in action, he felt a spark of something more.
"In this aspect, Mr. Clinton can do a thorough investigation. My client has bought properties and luxury cars worth at least ten million dollars for Ms. Powell. Both before and after his company's suffered losses, and Ms. Powell never contributed a penny."
She continued without giving them a chance to retort, "Holding onto marital assets, causing financial losses, and even keeping a gigolo... Mr. Clinton, are you considering a fifty-fifty split between both parties or we should settle this in court? Think it through carefully."
Karlene leaned slightly forward, her gaze sharp as she spoke her closing statement.
..
Once they were in Roy's car, Karlene reminded Roy, "Until the divorce is finalized, keep your distance from all women, don't give them any leverage."
Roy flashed a playful smile. "Does that include you too, Ms. Lee?"
He couldn't shake the admiration he felt for Karlene.
Somehow, this woman was different.
There was a spark in her that made him want to know more, to get closer. He realized he was developing a genuine interest in Karlene. It was a feeling he had never felt before. She was special, and he couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to have her in his life beyond the courtroom.
Karlene raised an eyebrow, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. "If you were to try getting close to me outside of work, you'd regret it."
Roy chuckled, his eyes gleaming with interest. "I'll take that challenge."
Karlene's smirk deepened, her eyes twinkling with amusement. "I heard you were quite the playboy before your marriage. Now that you're about to divorce, are you reverting to old habits?"
Roy's expression grew serious, his playful demeanor shifting. "I'm not playing around when it comes to you, Ms. Lee. This is different."
Karlene's smile turned thoughtful. "First, I don't date my clients. Second, I'm not interested in divorced men, Mr. Lloyd."
Roy raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Then what kind of man are you interested in?"
Karlene pondered for a moment before replying, "Someone like my sister."
"Your sister?" Roy widened his eyes in surprise before asking, "Are trying to say you're interested in women?"
Karlene let out a soft laugh at his conclusion. "And what if I am, Mr. Lloyd?"
Roy grinned, undeterred. "Then I'll do my best to be the first man you're interested in."
Karlene looked at him doubtfully. "I don't know where you get your confidence from, considering you're going through a divorce. You couldn't even keep your current wife, yet you think you can make me interested in you?"
Roy's playful demeanor disappeared, replaced by a serious expression. "My marriage with Anne wasn't based on love. It was a political arrangement by our families, a partnership for mutual benefits.
We lived separate lives, never interfering with each other's business. I never expected things to spiral like this, and now after her family downfall, she wants to ruin me to get my asset."
The Powell family had once wielded significant political power, which made them an advantageous match for the Lloyd family.
However, when they lost their influence, Anne found herself in desperate need of a large sum of money to support her family's declining status.
This led to her attempts to seize Roy's assets.
Both Roy and his family recognized that the marriage had outlived its usefulness and believed that it shouldn't continue, as the Powell family no longer provided any benefits to them.
Karlene shook her head. "Men like you, from the upper echelons, always have complicated relationships. Besides work, I don't want to get involved with any of it."
She turned to the driver. "You can drop me off at the building in front. I can walk back to my office from there."
The driver looked at Roy for permission, and Roy nodded reluctantly.
He knew he couldn't keep Karlene with him for long.
When the car eventually stopped, Karlene stepped out of it without a backward glance. Roy quickly rolled down the window and called after her, "Hey, aren't you even going to say goodbye?"
Karlene paused for a moment, then waved her hand dismissively without turning around. Roy watched her go, a determined smile playing on his lips.
...
Shuri was at work in her clinic, her focus sharp as she attended to the steady stream of patients.
It was a busy day, but she felt surprisingly refreshed, thanks to the restful sleep she'd had the night before, aided by Jin's fragrant pouch.
She made a mental note to ask him where he got it, appreciating the rare night of sleep free from the haunting nightmares of her first life.
"Dr. Lee, the next patient is ready for you," her veterinary assistant, Shik Bang, informed her.
"Alright, send them in."
Shuri turned back to her computer and glanced at the patient file before she froze when she saw the dog's name. "Snowball?"
Her heart pounded as she read on, seeing the guardian's name: Ran Lee.
Before she could process this, Shik entered the room, followed by a tall man wearing a cap and mask, carrying a fluffy white Pomeranian.
Shuri's eyes widened as she instantly recognized both the man and the dog.
The dog reacted with excitement, its tail wagging furiously as if it recognized her too.
Snowball wriggled out of the man's arms and leaped toward Shuri.
"Watch out!" Shuri exclaimed and instinctively hurried over to catch the dog, preventing it from falling.
As she held Snowball, she looked up, her eyes meeting those familiar light blue eyes of the masked man.
Her breath caught in her throat as he reached out, his arms already around her, steadying her with a familiar, comforting touch.
It felt as if time stood still.
Then she heard him whispering close to her ear, "I've finally found you, Rin."
