I Bacame the Mother of His Child-Chapter 16 - 15: Admiring Major Song
Chapter 16: Chapter 15: Admiring Major Song
Song Yuanhuan was a military man and had become accustomed to the disciplined life of the troops. At the sound of the wake-up bugle at six o'clock sharp, his eyes opened, his clear gaze devoid of any trace of sleepiness, as if he had only rested his eyes the previous night and instantly became spirited.
Xu Xiuxiu faintly heard the wake-up call too and opened her eyes languidly to glance at Song Yuanhuan who had efficiently dressed. "Are we getting up?" she asked with a heavy drowsiness in her voice. After asking, her heavy eyelids uncontrollably closed again—she was simply too sleepy to keep her eyes open.

"Yes! I'm going for a morning run, you can sleep a bit longer," Song Yuanhuan said before turning and leaving the room.
Relieved to hear that she could continue sleeping, Xu Xiuxiu's mind relaxed. She pulled the green army blanket over and hugged Song Chengguang who was sleeping spread-eagled next to her and continued to dream.
When Xu Xiuxiu woke again, it was already broad daylight.
From outside, the sound of orderly jogging occasionally passed by. Xu Xiuxiu had never stayed in the barracks, but she couldn't help being curious about the military scenery. She slowly got up and opened the window to peek outside.
She saw a group of soldiers clad in green military uniforms running past. When they spotted Xu Xiuxiu poking her head out, they all uniformly shouted, "Good morning, sister-in-law!" The loud voices startled Xu Xiuxiu.
Embarrassed, Xu Xiuxiu returned their greeting and watched them jog into the distance, a smile unwittingly spreading across her lips.
"Mom! Mom!" Song Chengguang's pronunciation was becoming more distinct, and waking up early in the morning, he incessantly called out to Xu Xiuxiu as if he could never call her enough, and the little guy was quite imperious as well; he definitely expected a response from Xu Xiuxiu every time he called out, or else he would get upset.
Xu Xiuxiu was in the mood to tease the little one. He would call, and she would answer. By the time Song Yuanhuan returned with breakfast, what he saw was Xu Xiuxiu amusing Song Chengguang—the little guy shouting in all sorts of tones and calls for his mom.
"Let's have breakfast!" Song Yuanhuan casually set the breakfast on the dining table.
Xu Xiuxiu, having already washed up with Song Chengguang, was just waiting for breakfast. Hearing Song Yuanhuan's voice, she headed straight to the small dining table with Song Chengguang.
Breakfast consisted of soy milk and deep-fried dough sticks, crispy and tasty, along with a small portion of soft-cooked millet porridge, obviously prepared for little Song Chengguang.
It had been a long time since Xu Xiuxiu had last eaten deep-fried dough sticks, and her appetite was quite good. Song Chengguang, to his credit, ate most of his small portion of porridge. Song Yuanhuan ate his meal methodically, deliberately slowing down his pace. Typically a swift diner at the mess hall in the military, he guessed that some leftovers from this mother and child would remain, and being averse to waste, he mentally prepared himself to pick up their leftovers.
After breakfast, Song Yuanhuan strolled around the military residential area with his wife and son.
Listening to Xu Xiuxiu's frequent curious inquiries and responding kindly, the family of three appeared to have a very harmonious atmosphere.
Of course, that was assuming these two didn't show up.
"Major Song." Approaching them were two young women in green military uniforms, one with long hair who upon seeing Song Yuanhuan eagerly stepped forward to greet him. Her eyes were filled with the affectionate sentiments of a young girl, clearly disregarding the presence of Xu Xiuxiu and Song Chengguang.
Is her presence really that low? Xiuxiu thought to herself.
"Major Song, our troupe needs to go to the countryside to perform this week. Do you have time recently? Let's go together!" The girl proposed and inquired, her eyes filled with hope as she looked at Yuanhuan.
Yuanhuan, pulling a grim face, remained silent, his gaze sweeping over Xiuxiu beside him.
Xiuxiu remained silent, frowning as she looked at the two girls in front of her. Thoughts raced through her mind—that wasn't it said that people in the '80s were reserved in their feelings? Yet this young girl was so blatantly honest about her feelings, seemingly fearful that Yuanhuan would not notice, supposedly a member of the military arts troupe but so lacking in restraint!
"Xiangxiang..." The short-haired girl beside the speaker was more sensible. Seeing Xiuxiu's indifferent expression, she immediately tugged at the sleeve of the girl beside her. She felt somewhat troubled by her friend who would lose her bearings at the sight of Yuanhuan, "Is this the sister-in-law here to visit her family? She's really pretty!" As she spoke, she smiled ingratiatingly at Xiuxiu.
To be honest, she was also surprised. She knew that Yuanhuan, Major Song, was married and heard he had a rural wife and that they even had a son who was frail and might have to resign at any time. Xiangxiang liked Yuanhuan a lot; she thought if Yuanhuan's wife was ordinary-looking and had passed away, Xiangxiang might actually have a chance to marry Yuanhuan. Therefore, she had not done much to discourage Xiangxiang's actions, but Xiuxiu's appearance was unexpected.
She was very beautiful, with very fair skin, her attire was fashionable, remarkably so, not even trying to hide her graceful demeanor even when holding a child, far surpassing Xiangxiang.
"Sister-in-law?" The girl known as Xiangxiang slowly came back to her senses, her gaze at Xiuxiu filled with confusion and scrutiny, "What sister-in-law?" uttering in complete incomprehension.
"What else could it be, if not Major Song's beloved?" the short-haired girl awkwardly reminded.
"How could that be." Xiangxiang argued discontentedly, her pretty face scowling.
"No mistake, this is my beloved, Xiuxiu." Yuanhuan then raised his hand, wrapping it around Xiuxiu's shoulders as he declared.
The girl called Xiangxiang was immediately dumbfounded, "Is she really your beloved?" she asked, looking at Yuanhuan, desiring his personal confirmation, her expression teary and feeling deceived.
Xiuxiu, seeing this, was struck by a thought—could it be that Yuanhuan had hidden his married status and deceived this naïve young girl's feelings? Really, it wasn't strange for Xiuxiu to think sideways; after all, such scenarios were not uncommon in the '80s.
Men with capabilities, seeing a prettier young girl and falling head over heels, increasingly unsatisfied with the homely wife at home—it was all too common, with the heartless men being especially notorious during the '80s; moreover, the original owner had that kind of demeaning personality, which no normal man could tolerate.
"That's right." Yuanhuan, impatient, glanced at the girl, "We have other matters, we'll take our leave first." With that, he massaged Xiuxiu's shoulders and walked forward, Xiuxiu instinctively followed him, and by the time they had walked quite a distance, the two girls were still standing there motionless.
Walking side by side, having just dealt with the two women, Xiuxiu also held back her curiosity, silently returning to the dormitory.
Xiuxiu laid Song Chen down on the bed, picked up the toy gun Mr. Xu had made for him to play with, then started to clean the clothes Song Chen had changed out of yesterday, hoping to wash and dry them by evening.
Yuanhuan, however, frowned, holding back Xiuxiu who was about to head to the bathroom, "Why don't you ask me what this is all about?" his tone showing his annoyance at her apparent lack of concern.
