Infinite Cube: Extra's Life in Another World-Chapter 47: Training Montage [1]
Chapter 47 - Training Montage [1]
"You're finally here." Eve's silk-like skin shimmered softly under the approaching moonlight. "I'm glad you wore your zero suit."
Kai shrugged before speaking. "Why exactly am I wearing it? It isn't the most comfortable piece of clothing to wear while training."
Eve's gaze locked onto his as she shook her head. "The reason I told you to wear it is because a mage can't fight without their suit once outside the dome."
Picking up a wooden sword from the weapon rack and channeling mana into it, she continued. "As you may already know, since you've read the entire story, mana and miasma are two sides of the same coin... in the sense that both are harmful to humans, only that mana is slightly purified."
She stared at the blade as it shattered into splinters after taking less than one percent of her power. "This unfiltered mana or miasma produced by drifters is extremely dangerous for mages, especially in large quantities, and even worse for humans who can't be protected by mana. That's why many died during the shift from the Third to Fourth Genesis."
"But?" Kai inquired. "This miasma isn't corrosive to us 'mages' per se; it's more like it distorts our core, making us go into a frenzy like drifters. Why?"
Eve's eyes widened but soon relaxed. "It seems you don't know everything."
Seeing Kai nod, she continued. "Drifters and mages aren't that different. We were all mundane humans who gained our abilities from the Cube, but unlike us mages, they didn't quite retain their humanity."
Summoning two frail swords, she tossed one over to Kai. "That's the weapon you use, right? A tachi blade."
Kai nodded as he looked at the blade that seemed like it could break into shards with only a light tap. "But I do know a bit about greatswords and spears."
"I guess your trait does require a lot of versatility," she added. "I won't move from this circle."
Kai looked at the sharp carving of a circle that Eve had etched with the wooden sword. "I will only use a downward slash when your blade enters this circle."
Kai smiled darkly. Like that would ever compensate for the gap in strength.

But he still had to try his best against the insurmountable figure if he was going to have even an inkling of a chance to surpass her.
Mana surged through his body, his already light frame becoming almost weightless. His blue mana crackled, enveloping the tachi completely.
"Then I won't hold anything back," he proclaimed, lunging toward her.
------
Panting frantically, Kai looked at the figure standing above him, yawning in boredom from the fight, while he looked down at his own pitiful state.
His hair was tattered, his breath ragged, and his hands trembling profusely from the intensity of his master's random cleaves.
He cursed under his breath, his cold sweat dripping onto the stone-paved ground of the courtyard.
Not even his best attack, using both Transmigrator and Legion as decoys, had worked.
Eve slowly leaned on her sword, its tip placed on the ground with elegance.
"Kai, how much do you know about your ability. No, scratch that, how much do you know about combat? I won't expect much from you since you came from a peaceful world, but how much do you know?"
[Kai...]
Alpha's voice this time was hitched and exhausted; she had to constantly formulate unresponsive plans throughout the fight, completely destroying her confidence.
[Maybe she knows a way to help us.]
Kai didn't need either Alpha or Legion to tell him what to do.
"Nothing," he answered without hesitation.
Eve smiled at his honest answer, a genuine smile, as if she were looking at her child making his first mistakes. "Then let's start from the basics." She said. "This evening, I will drill everything into you."
She turned to the gate, then back to him before continuing. "I hope you don't have any plans."
Kai shook his head. "Even if I did, they would have to go home."
"Even if it's your girlfriend?"
Using the tachi to get back to his feet, Kai answered, "I have nothing like that."
"Oh ho, a loner," she smirked, teasing Kai.
"Yeah, only following my master's footsteps," he replied sarcastically.
"It seems the beating wasn't enough, brat."
Kai smiled as he moved closer to her. "I think so too."
------
Kai and Eve were now seated side by side on the bench facing the courtyard.
Droplets of cold water slid down Kai's lips as he emptied the bottle. Eve simply stared at him without uttering a word.
"Thanks," he said, handing the can over to Eve.
"You're welcome," she replied, dismissing the modest-looking can.
"Now, will you do it?" Eve asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Kai hesitated for a moment before nodding. He had already made his decision, he was going to place his complete trust in Eve, no matter how much his instincts screamed otherwise.
Swiping his hand through the air, his window which he had avoided checking since leaving the dungeon appeared before him.
Scanning through the stats, he was equally shocked by the drastic changes that had occurred in less than a day.

"Why didn't you tell me about this?" Eve exclaimed.
Kai already knew what she was referring to. It wasn't his X-ranked trait since he had already informed her about that, though her eyes still widened upon seeing it.
Nor was it his enormous apprentice core capacity, high stat points, or the strange nature of his window since he had also explained those to her earlier, in the underground basement of her store. Because of that, she had been able to contain her shock to some extent.
The real reason for her reaction was something that even Kai himself was taken aback by.
"Core filled... damp breaking."
Those few words sent a surge of terror through his body. Clenching his fist, he cursed himself for the carelessness of not checking his stats after absorbing so many points.
"I didn't know either," he admitted.
Eve sighed. She couldn't yet explain her concerns, not until in closer, her skin lightly grazing his.

After reading through his abilities and traits, Eve took a deep breath and waited.

Exhaling heavily after finishing the system review, Eve's exhausted gaze landed on Kai, who was deep in thought.
'How could a system window like this even exist?' she wondered, gripping Kai by the shoulder.
"Kid," she said, trying to pull Kai's drifting attention back. "We have a lot to discuss, something very important."
Kai shrugged slightly. "How important?" he asked.
"You're about to die."
Kai's eyes widened for a moment, his ragged breathing breaking into fragmented words.
"I'm... going to die?"
