I've Become the King of Villains in the Game-Chapter 713 - 451 Plot Reversal_2
Chapter 713: 451 Plot Reversal_2
“Damn this scum!”
General Vance cursed angrily.
Though he had guessed that the enemy might set up a trap at the bridgehead fortress, he hadn’t anticipated such a terrifying “suicide” explosion. They were willing to sacrifice this militarily strategic fortress just to bite at them viciously like a rabid dog. Had it not been for some transcendental intervention that disturbed the explosives and prevented them from detonating, by now the Imperial Army would likely have suffered significant casualties!
After a few seconds of silence, the general managed to utter a difficult phrase:
“Someone is helping us…”
The adjutant, several high-ranking officers in tow, and the scouting party were all quite surprised. They couldn’t help but frown thoughtfully, trying to comprehend the general’s words.
“How is Governing Officer Jack doing now?”
General Vance suddenly turned and asked the adjutant.
The latter snapped back to reality and hurriedly pointed above them.
“Another scouting party sent a message about fifteen minutes ago. It seems that Governing Officer Jack has ended the battle and successfully killed the enemy’s Transcendent!”
As the adjutant spoke, his face involuntarily revealed an admiring expression.
He was well aware of everything that had happened behind the bridge. The nun from the Moon Church had revealed the identity of their assailant, an incarnation of a Saint-level formidable force… Governing Officer Jack, single-handedly, had brought them down, a truly strong warrior’s bearing. Not only had he ensured the safety of the general and the high command, but he had also eliminated a major threat to the Imperial Army.
“Let’s go take a look,”
General Vance decided and turned toward the staircase leading up the tall wall.
“Yes, General.”
The accompanying staff hurried to follow.
Moments later, with the help of his subordinates, the general climbed onto the badly damaged wall platform with difficulty. The adjutant kept reminding him to be careful of the rubble underfoot to avoid tripping and falling.
The few sturdy bodyguards who had been replenished patrolled closely on either side of the general, scouting the path and protecting him every step of the way.
“Don’t treat me like a three-year-old child! I have been through countless battles in my life, I am no tenderfoot!”
General Vance shook off the bodyguards’ support with some irritation, almost reaching for his gun, which scared both the bodyguard and the adjutant to hastily apologize.
Once the general had calmed down, he snorted coldly and approached the young man in a black hat who was casually sitting on the edge of a broken wall, with his back to everyone.
The other seemed to be silently overlooking the bridgehead fortress, his hand gently caressing the silver staff that never left his side.
As General Vance and his party approached, before they could speak, the other party, without turning his head, spoke first:
“General, this battle is over.”
“Yes, it is,”
General Vance didn’t feel offended by the other’s failure to stand up; he just calmly nodded.
“Our army has taken over the bridgehead fortress, the enemy has lost most of their forces, and the rest have been captured. This battle at Hercules Bridgehead Fortress is our victory…”
Breathing deeply, the general solemnly took off his military cap and saluted the black-hatted gentleman with a standard Tresor Empire military salute.
“Though I am not fond of the Seven Gods Church intervening in warfare, this time I am very grateful for your assistance to the military… You have saved many lives, including mine. But this isn’t the main reason for my gratitude; it’s because you have enabled the Empire to successfully seize the bridgehead fortress. In the future, the Empire will pass through here, continuously sending troops straight into the heartland of the Yake Principality, playing a crucial role in containing the main battlefield and the overall war situation.”
He implied in his words.
The people around the general found it a bit strange. Even if Governing Officer Jack’s contribution was significant, it was not enough to make General Vance show such respect and praise. Moreover, the general had never treated any member of the Seven Gods Church in such a manner, not even the Pope!
Chen Lun stood up slowly, leaning on the silver staff and turned to look at General Vance with a light chuckle.
“How did the general know it was me?”
General Vance only shook his head.
“Just a hunch… The three churches that accompanied the army in this battle, Priest Kuni and Nun Suha, have never given me the profound and unfathomable feeling that you do. I think… except for you, no one else would be capable, nor dare to, deceive both friend and foe alike, and suppress what would have been a devastating explosion that could have affected the entire course of the war, snuffed out into nothingness.”
While he never admitted any misjudgments or mistakes outright, Chen Lun also knew that in this era, those of high status seldom admitted to being wrong. The hint of annoyance and disappointment in General Vance’s words suggested he was willing to lower his stature and sacrifice a bit of the Imperial General’s pride to say these things, which was enough to show his respect.
Chen Lun nodded, but said with indifference,
“You flatter me too much, General. It was merely a reckless adventure on my part.”
“Excessive modesty is indeed extreme arrogance, Mr. Jack Spett.”
General Vance clearly wasn’t buying it as he could now be certain that the abilities of the young man in the black hat far surpassed what he let on superficially.
With the power to turn the tide of the entire battlefield by himself, this man was certainly not ordinary.
In the future, he would surely rise to even greater and more distant heights.
Drawing on his years of experience and perception, General Vance had no doubt about this speculation.
“After the war is over, if there is a chance, you are welcome to visit my residence. Although it is a bit old-fashioned, I believe the fine wines I have collected will satisfy you,”
General Vance put his military cap back on and offered a rare smile.
