Chapter 56 - An Oath Of A Forgotten Knight

My eyes opened to a dark blue sky, snowflakes drifting down. My body felt nothing—No smell, no taste, nothing. It was as if two out of my five senses were absent completely.

My body was lying against a soft and cold surface, which seemed like soil. Around the edges of my vision few white long tundras were planted.

Dante?

Croft?

Those two did not respond to me, which I found strange. It was as if their roots had been taken out of my head.

The last thing I remember was fighting Arvax The Oathbound, almost dying while defeating him, after that, I... fainted?

"Did I die?" I muttered, pushing myself up from the surface. My vision now was filled with white—Tundras, snow gathering in the distance.

"Afterlife is supposed to be this cold?"

"You are not dead yet, child." A deep and smooth voice belonging to a man echoed behind me.

I turned around in an instant, putting my arms up. Making myself ready for another fight. "Who the hell?!"

"Calm down, you won already." It was a man sitting down on a white rock. He had snow white hair and sapphire blue eyes. His skin was as fair as snow, covered by an armour of frost. His shoulder pads were embedded with small spikes of ice.

His posture was leaning forward, his elbows rested against his thighs. Letting his hands hang loosely against his legs. He was undoubtedly handsome.

But his most important feature was his long ears.

"An elf?" I blurted out. My eyes widened at the elven man before me, who looked at me with a mix of amusement and something that seemed like gratitude.

"Yes, an elf," He chuckled. "But more importantly—A Snow Elf."

"Snow Elf? What the hell is that?"

"Wait, you don't know?" His smile faded as he looked at me, his eyebrows arching. "You understand my ancient tongue, yet you don't even know what I am? You sure are interesting."

"So, who are you? Got any name?" I asked.

"Me—I am Arvax Elvaron Frostmarch." He introduced himself. "And you? What is your name, child?"

"Wait! Arvax?!" I stepped back. My fists clenched tightly as I looked at him. This is the guy I was just fighting?! He is that rotten corpse?! My mind spiralled with different thoughts and feelings. I did not know what to make of it.

"Calm down," He sighed, face palming himself. "I just wanted to talk, and you show me this disrespect?"

I lowered my fists, my gaze narrowing on him. "Still, I can't just trust the guy who was about to give me frostbite."

"Yes, I understand, but at least listen to me."

"Fine," I sighed. "What did you want to talk about, Sir Great Knight?"

"Arvax is fine, but you did not tell me your name."

"It is Noah—Noah Von Blitzfeld."

"Noah? Are you a human? You don't look like one." He asked, perplexed. It was the same all over again, just like what had happened with Aeris; this guy also mistook me for an elf?

Am I some kind of prince or something?

"I am completely a normal human," I stated, lifting the hair that fell over my ear.

"Not even a hybrid?"

"Nope."

"That's strange..." He mumbled, striking his chin. "Well, that should not matter now." He sat upright, his posture regal and elegant like that of a noble. With a click of his finger, a white rock manifested behind me. "Please sit."

"Arvax, can we start now?" I asked, sitting down on the rock. It was hard and cold but it did not feel uncomfortable to sit in. "I also have a lot of questions to ask you."

"I understand that," He smiled, standing up from his seat and kneeling. "Now, Noah, first of all—I, Arvax Elvaron Frostmarch, offer you my gratitude for freeing my soul."

"Ok?"

He stood up from the ground, taking his seat back. "That is all I wanted to say. Now, you can go ahead and throw me your doubts."

Did he just do all of this to thank me? Is he dumb or absolutely regal?

"Ok, I have a few questions. Let me list them."

I raised one finger. "First one, who the hell were you? Like before your undead state."

"Two, what place am I in? Is it something you can control?"

"Three, what happened to you before you died? These are the questions I have."

Arvax's gaze softened over me. "Me? Before my death, I was an apostle of Glacialis—the Goddess of Frost and Unbound Cold. I was also the ruler of the first elven empire, Frostmarch."

"For your second question, you are in my domain—Frozen Tundra. I brought you here just to thank you... After that, I will release this domain and finally return to the world of souls."

Domain, huh?

"You were a Sovereign?" I asked. Domain is an ability that only a sovereign-level being could possess. It is their authority to control the element or concept they are the Sovereign of.

"Indeed, the Frost Sovereign that fought alongside the 1st Human Sovereign, Aurelian Chernov Orlovski. You know him, right?"

"Of course,"

Who would not? Aurelian Chernov Orlovski, the man, the legend. The human who became a God. He, alongside a few other sovereigns and Gods, defeated the great darkness that almost destroyed the world.

His defeating of the darkness is what started the Era of Dawn.

An Era of Peace in the world of Elmar.

He was known as the Sovereign of Light, the Hero of Dawn and many other names. He was the first warlord king of Ironvale. Basically, he established the Kingdom.

And Raiden's predecessor in a way.

"And for the third one? How did a great Sovereign such as yourself end up as a Draugr?" I asked.

"Well, my Goddess and I were killed along with the other two apostles." His eyes lowered, a small smile on his lips.

"You have to be joking, right?"

"No, that darkness, that wrath, killed us and many other Gods." His jaw tightened, veins bulging at his temples. "But somehow, our Goddess was able to maintain her essence. She might not be as strong as she was before, but she is still a Goddess."

"As for me and the other two apostles—We are here guarding her shrine for eternity. We became undead. My skin and muscles decayed, leaving me with a few rotten bits and my skeleton. And our purpose."

He lifted his head, his blue eyes locking with mine. "But you gave me rest from my suffering. From my duty." Tears welled in his eyes. "I can now finally meet my wife, my daughter. It is all thanks to you... Noah."

His form started fading, turning into small white particles. "Ah, I guess it is time that I go." He looked at me one last time, his lips parting. "Be well now, I shall meet you again when your time comes. And then we can have a duel of eternity."

"No thanks, I am perfectly fine for now," I said, not wanting any of this bullshit.

He chuckled at my words. "Yes, you are right." His form completely faded, meeting with the cold air that flowed in the domain.

The tundra flowers slowly started turning into snow particles themselves. The world was getting undone as its ruler had fallen.

"Guess, I should wake up." I stood up from the stone that had also started fading. And then everything went black.

My eyes opened to a wooden ceiling. My back felt a soft sensation of a mattress pressing against me, the air was warm with the scent of herbs and potions.

I sat up, my body aching all over. Few spots were covered with bandages and patches. The frost no longer clung to me. "Ouch!" I cried out as pain shot through my arm.

"Oh, you are finally awake."
