Magus Bloodlines.-Chapter 57: Battle In The Infirmary.
Chapter 57 - Battle In The Infirmary.
Gavin gritted his teeth as another explosion sound too close for comfort. He had managed to recover some energy in the last hour since his fight with Erick. Not much, but enough that he could walk on his own a few feet. Of all the times for enemies to come knocking at his door, it had to be when he was at his weakest. Gavin was beyond frustrated at his own lack of abilities and judgement. Erza was right to be frustrated with him for using the Overdrive skill. It was a reckless and foolish thing to do, just to win a match.
But now, things were different. He had a whole other reason he was furious at himself. He had an unborn child to protect, and he couldn't even muster the strength to walk across the room yet. One thing was for sure, if a fight broke out, he would use everything he had, regardless of the consequences to himself.
"Veronica, what are my options for fighting?" Gavin asked his system. She had to have some kind of idea on what he might be capable of doing.
"Upon analysis of your current status and abilities, I can only recommend you stay out of any near fighting for the near future," was Veronica's response. That only irritated Gavin more as he racked his brain trying to come up with some type of solution. There was always an answer, sometimes you had to think outside the box. Then a sudden idea came to mind.
"Veronica, what is the limits of the necromancy magic? Like the effective range for targeting bodies for reanimation?" Gavin asked her. If he could use the dark power of necromancy on any fallen bodies and make them fight for Gavin's pack, they might just be able to escape with their lives.
"According to all the data we memorized from the library, it can vary depending on strength of the mage. Some reported only as far as ten feet, others anything within line-of-sight. While some reported distances far greater than that," Veronica replied after a moment of searching through her internal database.
"Veronica, activate the magic and search for any bodies that are suitable for targets", Gavin said as he wanted to test something out. He had never tried this magic before and doubted it would work. But it was worth a try.
"Searching, one moment please," Veronica's cool voice came. The moment felt like an eternity to Gavin as he waited, his ears focusing on any nearby explosions as the battle was getting closer to them.
"Multiple targets located, attempt is possible. But you should know, with your current levels of mana not many will be capable of staying reanimated for long." Veronica said as she warned Gavin.
Gavin grinned at her response. So with his cheat code system, he could really begin to turn the tide of this battle without having to do much fighting himself.
Erza noticed the sudden grin on Gavin's face as she raised an eyebrow. Before she was able to ask him any questions an explosion went off against the front door. The entire room shook from the force of the impact. The head nurse, Professor Jane looked up suddenly, panic and determination filled her features.
The other staff had been gathering all the unused beds and using magic, made a jerry-rigged barrier between them and the front door. The barrier consisted of the metal infirmary beds and that same, shiny black stone or metal like material fused together. It rose several feet high and several feet thick. Professor Jane called out to the other staff members, and they stood in front of all the students in the room.
"Whatever happens students, stay behind the barrier. Protect each other the best you can." Professor Jane instructed as another explosive impact hit the front door. Small cracks began to appear along the surface of the door, a sign it was giving out under the constant barrage of attacks.
Gavin looked around. There were eight staff members including Professor Jane in the front row. Behind them were the uninjured students, less than a dozen or so that were able to fight. Gavin doubted they had any real experience in combat and wouldn't be very useful. There were four students that were injured in beds behind them, including Gavin. Erick was on his own feet next to their little group. He was already shifted into his golden lion form with his thick red mane flowing around his neck.
That just left Gavin, Erza, Helena and Jackson. Not the best odds for any real conflict. "Veronica, if needed will it be possible to use the overdrive skill again?" Gavin asked her. He had to make sure he could use it in case of an emergency, although he was sure the blow back from a second usage would be incredibly worse than just the one time.
"Yes, it is possible to use the skill. However, it's effects will not last as long as normal, and the drain on your body will be unlike anything you have experienced. Usage is not advised," Veronica replied, and if Gavin didn't know any better, he'd swear it sounded like she sighed in exasperation. Was his little AI system growing as they went through experiences?
"I understand. It's just good to know that I have a trick up my sleeve," Gavin replied. He well understood the risk. For Erza and his pack, however, he would take it without hesitation.
Another massive explosive impact rocked the door, and smoke filled the room as it went flying through the air, pieces of it going in every direction like shrapnel. Bullets began to fire into the room, indiscriminately. One of the staff members reacted as the door went off the hinges and raised a stone wall in front of them to block the gunfire.
Multiple fire balls soared into the room, impacting off the various barriers the staff had been busy erecting. Gunfire rained in as the attackers tried to kill as many of them as possible. The smoke made it impossible to see through to determine the numbers of the enemy. Gavin grunted as he tried to see through the smoke and was unable to do so. The heat from the multiple explosions rose the temperature of the infirmary as the battle waged on.
Helena cursed as she focused her own mana and responded with fire blasts of her own towards the enemy. Jackson added his wind magic to hers and increased the strength of her spells as they worked together to launch a counter offensive.
Screams could be heard as their combined spells found their targets in the hallway. The combined spells were larger and had a lot more of an impact than a standard fire ball spell. Jackson's wind magic was like fuel for Helena's fire spells as they worked in tandem.
Erick let loose his lion's roar and charged forward, easily dodging all the offensive magic. He grabbed one of the Infirmary beds and used it as a shield in front of him as he charged through the doorway and at the attackers. Once he reached the hallway he was stunned for only a moment. Several dozen men in black uniforms and tactical gear stood in front of him, weapons and offensive spells raised to strike.

He gritted his teeth as quickly assessed the situation in a second. He used his mana and covered his body in thick, condensed stone-like armor. His speed would be slightly affected, but he needed the additional protection the armor would provide against smaller caliber weaponry. He let loose another roar as he charged the men. Bullets and spells ricochet off his stone armor as he reached the front line. Men screamed as he tore through their body armor like a hot knife through butter with his razor-sharp claws. These fools thought to come here and attack or kill everyone, including him? No way. Erick would enjoy making them pay for their arrogance. But where in seven hells was his sister?
