Chapter 72 -72 Liu Xiaoyu_1

“Young heroes, were you satisfied with the feast just now?”

“Very satisfied, especially the pork belly dish. It was good in color, aroma, and flavor. I can even say it’s the best dish I’ve ever tasted.”

“Haha, that pork belly dish is indeed a famous speciality of Li Family Village.”

After a gracious welcome, Steward Cui led Chu Liang and Lin Bei for a leisurely stroll around Li Family Village. The scenery was beautiful, the gardens elegant, the layout of rocks, trees, pavilions, and towers was classic and refined.

Lin Bei turned his head and whispered to Chu Liang, “What if we leave Shu Mountain in the future? Wouldn’t it be nice to open a place like this, free and easy?”

Chu Liang smiled and said, “I’d rather stay on the mountain.”

“That’s boring,” Lin Bei said, “If I ever reach the end of my cultivation path, I’ll leave the mountain and open a brothel, and I won’t do business, only play by myself.”

“What’s the difference between that and having a bunch of wives?” Chu Liang half scornfully and half puzzledly asked.

Lin Bei declared righteously, “Of course it feels different with your own wife than with others’!”

Chu Liang: “?”

Amidst their laughter, an issue was brought up.

Each generation of disciples from Shu Mountain starts in the hundreds or even thousands, but after many years of growth, aside from the Thirty-Six Peak Masters and some core forces, the rest of the disciples eventually leave Shu Mountain.

One’s cultivation journey is a long and challenging process. Though Shu Mountain recruits talented ascetics, there is always an end. Some may find it impossible to break through to the Divine Consciousness Realm; some may stagnate at the Golden Core Realm; some may completely give up at the Five Elements Realm…

Many who stop in their cultivation seek a new life, which Chu Liang understood as “graduating”.

Those with lower cultivation may run small businesses or serve noble families. Relying on the reputation of Shu Mountain, they can lead comfortable lives. Those with higher cultivation can establish their own sects and develop minor sects.

The multitude of minor sects occurring throughout the Nine Heavens and Ten Lands are countless. The mainstream Cultivation World comprises the Nine Heavens, Ten Lands, and their many derivative sects. Outside this circle are those often referred to as non-mainstream cultivators.

However, Chu Liang’s current plan was to stay at Shu Mountain. Ideally, he would break through to the Wen Dao realm and become a powerful being, achieving “cultivation freedom”. He could then run for a Peak Master position at Shu Mountain, take on a couple of talented disciples, and live a stable life.

Steward Cui took them past a high porch that overlooked a courtyard. Down there, a group of girls gathered for what seemed like a selection process.

The few women in charge were seated at the front, with the young girls taking turns performing dances. Most were elegant and light-footed, pleasing to the eyes.

“Life’s better at the foot of the mountain, isn’t it? You’d never see scenes like this on Shu Mountain.” Lin Bei couldn’t help but laugh again.

Chu Liang asked, “What’s going on?”

“Oh,” answered Steward Cui. “They are selecting dancers for Miss Xue’s performance. As the musicians play different pieces, singers and dancers will perform on stage, requiring us to prepare the personnel. Since our Li Family Village doesn’t usually have these resources, we have to make temporary arrangements.”

“No wonder there are so many beautiful girls here. The chance to dance for Xue Lingxue isn’t for just anybody. I bet every skilled dancing girl in the city is here,” said Lin Bei. Suddenly his eyes lit up. “Look at that young girl. She’s absolutely gorgeous.”

Without his prompt, Chu Liang had also noticed the girl who had just come on stage.

The dancer before her had just been harshly criticized by the judges and left in tears. As she retreated off the stage, a burst of bright, vibrant colors entered their sight.

The young girl was dressed in a multicolored skirt, which looked brilliant. Her skin was as white as mutton-fat jade, and her hair was lightly tied up in a bun, with strands escaping in the breeze. Her eyebrows were finely arched above her big eyes, which brimmed with innocence.

Her gaze seemed vacant, but there was an undeniable charm to her demeanor. It was already late, and the surroundings were dim. But as she appeared, it was as if the sun had become brighter.

“My name is Liu Xiaoyu…”

She spoke in a timid voice, as if frightened, involuntarily eliciting sympathy from the onlookers.

The main judge, a woman in her forties or fifties who was a respected dance teacher in Southern Border City, softened her normally stern tone and asked, “Young lady, what dance can you perform?”

“I… I don’t really know how to dance…” Liu Xiaoyu blinked her large eyes.

“That’s alright, just perform the dance steps you’ve learned.” The judge spoke gently.

“Ok…” Liu Xiaoyu nodded lightly.

Then, they watched as she clasped her hands together, turned them upside down, shook her hips to the left, and then to the right.

She then stood still in place.

“Alright, now that you’ve warmed up, start dancing.” Another judge encouraged her.

Liu Xiaoyu appeared stunned, then replied, “I’ve finished dancing.”

“…” Silence.

The leading dance teacher remained silent for a moment before saying, “Young lady, although I like you, this is ultimately a selection for dancers… and your performance cannot pass.”

“What should I do then…” Liu Xiaoyu pouted, on the verge of tears.

“Dance skills can’t be learned overnight. Why don’t you… I heard your voice just now, it sounds quite nice, why don’t you try singing? You could be a singer instead?” The main dance teacher actually made a suggestion.

“That could work.” Liu Xiaoyu nodded lightly.

Another judge, who was in charge of singing, began to instruct her, “Then you come over here, learn this verse from me, ‘The shadow of the candle swings, the flames pierce through the gauze window, chilly after the rain—'”

“Hmm…” The young girl listened, then started singing, “‘Candle shadow, swinging the flaming pierces through gauze, window chilly after—'”

“Stop!” The singing judge immediately interrupted.

“Um…” The young girl stopped singing at once.

“Sorry…” The singing judge quickly apologized, “I just heard that none of your pitches were correct, I couldn’t help but interrupt…”

“It’s okay, even if you didn’t interrupt, I wouldn’t have been able to bear it,” the head dance judge sighed, “Young lady, you’re really not suited for this. Better go find something else to do.”

“Ah?” Liu Xiaoyu immediately pouted, “You won’t give me a chance to stay? I can learn what I don’t know…”

The head dance judge turned her head and called out with an expression of regret, “Protector, take her out.”

The young girl was pushed out by several protectors, crying all the while.

Seeing this, Lin Bei sighed with regret.

“What a pity.” He shook his head, “If only she could sing or dance like a normal person, she’d have had a chance at being selected.”

“Indeed, if this young girl could appear on stage, she would likely be very well-received by the audience,” Steward Cui, with years of star-chasing experience, gave an accurate assessment.

Looking at the two of them engrossed in watching the selection process, Chu Liang looked up at the sky and whispered, “Am I the only one who’s worried about when the monster will come?”
