Chapter 243: Chapter 243 - Out of here

Yunfeng grunted as he crawled beneath the collapsed ceiling again, trying to find a way through the rubble that separated them from Jai and Shao. Dust filled his throat, the concrete scratching his palms as he forced his way through. But again—just like before—there was no passage. Just more debris, more twisted metal, and no light on the other side.

He groaned in frustration, slamming his fist into the cracked wall beside him.

Then something hit him sharply on the head.

"Ow—what the hell?" he flinched and looked up.

Muchen stood above him, scowling and arms crossed. "It’s unstable. You know that," he said coldly, but his hand was already reaching out to help Yunfeng up. "They’ll find another way. We will too. Don’t be stupid."

Yunfeng stared up at him, dust still clinging to his lashes. "But—"

"We’ll find them again." Muchen’s voice softened. "Besides... can’t you sniff them out?"

Yunfeng blinked, stunned for a moment. Then slowly, his bright blue eyes lit up with sudden clarity. "Oh—right! Yeah! I forgot about that—Shao always leaves a scent trail." He scrambled up, brushing the grime from his clothes and hair.

Muchen sighed, stepping closer and helping brush off the remaining dust from Yunfeng’s head, gently ruffling through his white curls. "Try not to forget something like that again, yeah?"

Yunfeng’s cheeks flushed faintly, but he nodded. "Yeah..."

Behind them, Hana tightened her hold around little Yuki, her eyes flitting to every shadow that moved. "Guys, we need to go. I don’t like how this is progressing," she whispered. Her voice trembled despite her brave tone.

Muchen nodded, stepping back. "Is everyone okay?"

His eyes swept over the others, pausing on Kailun, who was pressing two fingers to his temple. His expression was tight, jaw clenched as he stood up slowly.

"I’m fine," he muttered.

Muchen turned to the older man—Jai’s grandfather—who looked dazed, a little pale. "You okay?"

The old man blinked for a second, like he’d forgotten where he was. Then he slowly nodded. "Y-Yeah, yeah... I’m fine. Let’s get going."

Just as they were about to move, Yunfeng held up a hand.

"Wait."

They froze. His eyes narrowed as he pointed toward the shattered school entrance, where the soldiers were now steadily entering, fanning through the wreckage.

"Why are they coming in?" Yunfeng murmured, more to himself than anyone else. "They don’t need to. They can just wait outside and shoot anything that tries to escape. So... why are they—"

His breath caught in his throat. Muchen saw it in his eyes immediately—the way the color drained from his face.

"Yunfeng?" Muchen’s voice tensed. "What’s wrong?"

Yunfeng turned to him slowly. "They might be after me."

A beat of silence. Cold. Heavy.

Muchen’s jaw clenched. "You’re saying... they’re here to capture you?"

"They were before," Yunfeng muttered, voice tight. "That old commander—he saw my fire. He must’ve seen it. They’ve been watching. And now they’re closing in."

His fists trembled at his sides. "They’re relentless. They won’t stop."

He looked up at Muchen, a flicker of fear quickly replaced by quiet fury.

"...Should we just kill them all?"

The question came out so soft, it felt almost like a whisper in a confessional. And yet, it thundered through the ruined gym like a gunshot.

Muchen stared at him.

He didn’t answer right away.

Then, after a beat, he stepped closer, placed a hand on Yunfeng’s shoulder, and said with deadly calm:

"Kill anyone who tries to hurt you. Don’t hesitate. It’s better to cut this problem from the roots."

Yunfeng’s breath hitched.

For once, he didn’t smile.

He simply nodded.

They quickly left the broken gymnasium.

The ruined hallways were eerily silent, still cloaked in the heavy mist left behind by the fog bomb.

Every step they took crunched faintly over broken glass and gravel.

The deeper they moved through the corridor, the thicker the silence grew—until a low, guttural growl shattered it.

It was close. Very close.

Yunfeng immediately stepped forward, shielding Muchen behind him as his eyes scanned the dense fog ahead. "Something’s here," he whispered.

Then came the first flicker of movement.

A figure emerged slowly from the gray mist—no, not one, but two—a woman hunched over, hair hanging in wild tangles around her blood-slicked face. And in her arms... something small. A baby.

No one dared breathe.

The woman’s head twisted toward them in a slow, almost curious way. Her mouth opened—revealing not teeth, but sharp, cracked fangs. Her eyes... were milky and dead, but still shimmering with something terrifyingly human.

She suddenly lunged.

Hana screamed as the mother zombie raced toward her, fangs bared.

But then—just inches away—she stopped.

Frozen in place. Not because of fear. But because her rotting gaze had landed on the small bundle clutched in Hana’s trembling arms.

Yuki gazed up at the zombie in shock.

For a second, the mother zombie stared. Her head tilted.

Then she growled—louder—and turned. Her fury redirected, she lunged now toward Yunfeng, snarling like a creature possessed.

Yunfeng barely had time to react when the thing was on him, claws raised—but—

CRASH!

A slab of metal came down between them as Muchen shoved him aside, eyes wide with panic.

At the same time, a door burst open from the side.

"Um, guys?!" came Zei’s voice as he peeked out from behind a shattered classroom door, yanking Hana and Yuki behind him. "I can use my powers, right?! Like, now?!"

Muchen turned, almost slapping his own forehead. "Why the hell didn’t I remember you were even here?! YES! Freeze her! Freeze everything close by!"

Zei didn’t hesitate.

His hands flew out, glowing faint blue. Instantly, the hallway burst with frost, the temperature dropping like a knife. The mother zombie and the infant in her decaying arms froze—literally—in mid-lunge, turned into grotesque statues of horror and grief.

"Quick! Everyone move!" Muchen ordered. "Zei, hold it as long as you can, got it?!"

They surged forward, running past the frozen corpses. But Yunfeng had stopped. He turned, staring—his chest heaving—as he gazed at the still figure of the mother and her baby. Something about the sight—about the child’s tiny, frozen hand clutched around her chest—made his heart throb.

"She wasn’t trying to kill Yuki," he whispered. "She... remembered being a mother."

"YUNFENG!" Muchen’s voice thundered from ahead. "Do you want me to come there and whoop your ass?! Move it!" fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

Yunfeng jolted as if slapped. "R-Right!" he stammered, and with one last look at the frozen figures, he ran after the others.

They moved fast, weaving around fallen beams and shattered desks, until finally, they reached the collapsed courtyard and the cracked perimeter wall.

"Grab what you can!" Muchen barked, pointing at the frozen soldiers scattered across the compound. "Guns, grenades—whatever’s usable!"

Yunfeng and Kailun reached down and wrenched rifles from two frozen soldiers. Hana picked up a belt of grenades, handing one to Qui Yue. Zei’s face was pale, his breath shallow, and blood trickled from one nostril.

"Hurry!" Zei cried, straining to hold the frozen state. "I can’t keep them locked forever!"

"We’re going as fast as we can!" Yunfeng shouted, helping Hana up first. She cradled Yuki and scrambled to the top of the wall.

Kailun shoved Yunfeng up next, groaning. "You’re heavier than you look!"

"Shut up!" Yunfeng muttered, pulling himself over the crumbling edge.

"Go, go, go!" Muchen called. "Next!"

"Zei, you’re up—" Qui Yue caught Zei just as he stumbled, blood now running down his chin.

"I’ve never... used it like this... in such a large scale..." Zei mumbled, eyes fluttering.

"I got you." Qui Yue steadied him and looked toward Muchen. "Lift him."

Together, they hoisted Zei up over the wall, Yunfeng pulling from the top. The boy collapsed once he reached the other side, gasping, hands trembling.

"Qui Yue, come on!" Muchen urged.

Qui Yue gave one last glance over his shoulder—at the silent campus behind them—and climbed. Muchen shoved him up from below, and then with a leap and groan, he was over too.

They were out.

The city X loomed before them, dark and empty.
