Psychic Overlord-Chapter 63: Networking
Chapter 63: Networking
Kaizer was alert the entire time, but he could not see Dennis paying any sort of special attention to him through his body language or demeanor, seemingly as if this entire lecture was completely natural.
This left the young man even more unsure of what to think, even as the lecture came to an end and people began to file out, chatting enthusiastically. However, the seven Special Echelon students remained seated, Kaizer pondering, Rina munching, and the others doing their own thing.
That was until someone spoke up.
"Hey, hey, you two aren’t you gonna introduce yourselves to us? It’s been a while since we had new playmates and I’ve definitely been dying of boredom dealing with these losers here."
The one who spoke was the slim yet slightly muscular woman with dark green hair and a confident smirk. She was glancing at Rina and Kaizer, speaking aloud, which attracted the attention of the other four.
Rina opened her mouth to speak, but this time Kaizer was faster, knowing his sister’s penchant for insults on first meeting. It was fine to bully those like Hector because Kaizer already assessed him to be significantly weaker, but these five gave him a feeling of danger.
"Kaizer Lunin, 19 years old. This is my cousin Rina Lunin, who is also the same age as myself. Nice to meet you all." Kaizer greeted politely with a nod.
The first esper to the left, the burly fellow with green lightning coursing around his body, responded first. "My real name is Tyrron Buld, 17. My esper name is Ragnar, which I prefer to be called."
The second esper, the elegant and arrogant woman, turned her head slightly. "You may know me as Eleanor Seltzer, of the noble Seltzer Clan. You will however, refer to me by my esper name, Elementia."
The third esper, the cold handsome man who looked like he was from a domineering CEO novel, did not even look their way, his eyes closed the entire time. "Lucian Vale. Esper name: Judgment."
The fourth esper, the one who prompted all this, grinned widely as she knocked her knuckles together. "Tessa Asano, at your service! Call me by my name or by my esper name, Titaness, I don’t care!"
The fifth and final esper, the easygoing troublemaker dressed fashionably, smiled and made a cool gesture. "Yo, name’s Roland Hayes, or you can call me Tide."
Rina blinked in confusion. "What the hell is that? Esper name? Are you guys superheroes or what?"
Kaizer was also curious about this, remembering that even Carla had an esper name by the officers who came to interrogate him back then, while Rina’s own father was called Reaper as well.
"It is not advised to use your real name when taking on missions from the Esper Commission, especially dangerous ones. Usually, an esper will choose a codename for themselves based on their ability, but many do not stick unless that esper is notorious." Eleanor explained, closing her book to glance over.
"Oh, so all I have to do is go on a mission?" Rina continued to inquire, her eyes lighting up.
"Not so simple, unfortunately. For us Special Echelon fellows, you will be given your esper name by your instructor as a form of homage. This title becomes official, regardless of whether you go on missions or not." Roland wagged a finger and added.
"Heeh? How boring." Rina immediately became disinterested.
"Right, what are your esper abilities and what rank are you if I may ask?" Eleanor seemed curious about this, her dark blue eyes on the sibling duo.
Rina first looked at Kaizer to see if it was okay, to which the young man nodded. It was not necessary to be hidden from one’s own peers, as these were their ’classmates’. Going by what his father often told him, one’s classmates from school were their important network when in adulthood.
Of course, this fact was not lost on the five.
"Hehe, my power is related to death, and I can control Death Energy. My esper rating is S+." Rina said boastfully.
The eyes of the five widened slightly, as they were shocked. Each grade proposed by Da Vinci during the Renaissance was extremely strict and had requirements on power, potential, and familiarity to reach that standard.
Even more so for S class abilities. S-, S, and S+ were three ranks with gaps wider than the Grand Canyon. Most Special Echelon espers were at the S- rating, and S was even rare. An S+ was almost unheard of, and seeing one in such an awkwardly dressed young girl who took orders from her brother made them feel unbalanced.
"My power is the psychic ability of Telekinesis and Telesthesia. My esper rating is S-." Kaizer broke the sudden silence with his own details.
Seeing that Kaizer was more ’normal,’ the five classmates felt much better and seemed to calm down. However, when they considered the dynamic between the two, they felt a hint of strangeness.
The ’dumb’ sister was S+ while the placid brother was S-. Hehe, when she realizes her value and her power far surpasses him, will she still look to him for guidance like now? Would she even acknowledge him?
These Special Echelon espers have been around for more than a year and know the cruelty of the esper world. They felt like the dynamic this duo had was a clear set up for failure.
Tyrron rubbed his spiky hair that looked prickly. "As you can see, my esper ability is that of Earth Lightning, which is why it is green. My esper rating is S- as well."
Eleanor glanced away. "My esper ability is Magic of the Ancients. My esper rating is S-."
Lucian finally opened his eyes for the first time. "Swords of Light. S rating."
Tessa smacked the handrest of her seat. "My power is Perfect Body! I can grow stronger as long as I train my physical ability! Though, these dumbasses gave me S- when I should be S+!!"
Roland stroked his non-existent beard. "Me? My ability is called The Wave. I can control vibrational force in an area around myself. My rating is S."
"Cool powers. So who are your instructors?" Rina asked, patting her bag for a snack but not finding one.
Tyrron was first again. "Carlisle Freed, the second Vice Dean."
"Huh? I never met that guy when we were being recruited." Rina asked with puzzlement.
"He’s more of a field esper compared to others who stay inside, so he’s hardly around." Roland explained.
"As for me, I am under Madam Sylvia." Eleanor stated calmly.
"Haha, me too!" Tessa added, placing her arm within her elbow while stretching.
"Oh, so you two are my ’apprentice sisters’ as they say in the oriental shows." Rina joked, sizing up Eleanor and Tessa once more.
Eleanor and Tessa were also surprised by this and understood why Madam Sylvia had been slightly less attentive to them these past few days. After nabbing an S+ esper student, they who were merely S-, were likely going to be slightly sidelined.
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed while Tessa remained smiling, but there was a glint in her eye. Kaizer glanced at the two of them casually and decided to advise Rina to be careful of them because their current thoughts were not sister-like at all.
"Tavion Hunt." Lucian said simply, interrupting the weird atmosphere.
"That weird fellow?" Rina remembered this instructor, who had simply stated that he would give them the basic necessities to reach their potential and nothing more, acting cool.
At the time, Rina thought he was just posing, but looking at his student, that might be his natural disposition.
"As for me, my mentor is also Carlisle Freed. What can I say, the fellow is adventurous and I can’t stay in one place too long." Roland revealed with a two-finger salute.
All eyes fell on Kaizer, who had yet to reveal his.
"Dean Rochester." Kaizer said simply, but his words had a stronger effect than Rina revealing she was S+.
The five looked like they had been struck by lightning, their faces full of confusion and shock. Kaizer and Rina were new to the esper society, so they were not aware of the power of the dean, especially in today’s era.
Not only was he the current publicly acknowledged strongest esper in the world, but he was known as the S+ esper: Traveler, who could go anywhere he wanted. On top of that, he had only taken on one student and made them the strongest in the world, announcing that he would only take on students who would become the strongest.
At the time, the Dean only said this to block those esper clans who wanted to send their best offspring to train under him, but given his track record, everyone took it quite literally.
Now, looking at the reserved Kaizer who claimed to be S-, the five immediately thought that his esper rating was a lie, likely meant to protect him. He likely possessed some form of power that transcended common sense, otherwise the dean would never take an S- esper.
