Chapter 44: Gamble

Damon continued with his momentum and culled down the horde of fallen using Blood Cleave. He was taking down three or four fallen every single attack, but it was still not enough. The numbers were simply ridiculous, not to mention the casters who were bombing him constantly.

In the end, somehow, he got through the third wave. Finally, the trial was completed.

Expecting the notifications, Damon wondered what additional reward he was going to get for the trial completion, when suddenly a fourth wave appeared around him.

Huh? Damon frowned. In his last life, the person who did this ritual only mentioned three waves. He personally had only ever attempted three waves. Now there was a fourth one? Was this because he was the first to attempt this?

Or maybe there was a time limit? And maybe because he was well within the time limit, another wave started?

Damon could come up with several theories, but he did not have the time at the moment to focus on things like this.

Another wave meant another opportunity!

An opportunity he couldn’t miss!

He warily eyed the fallen biters and the fallen casters, except there was a new type now. A bigger, brutish fallen who wielded a blood shield.

"So a tank’s in the picture, huh?" Damon grinned. He was still confident in his skills and boldly started cleaving the fallen around him left and right. Of course, he completely ignored the tanks and tried to get to the casters.

The entire fight was a big mess from the start to the end, and Damon was beginning to see his limit. He was not willing to admit it, but it looked like the fourth wave was too much for him to handle.

He was way in over his head, and all his vitals were close to bottoming out. Bloodthirst was also gripping him like a demon on his back.

However, it was exactly for this situation that Damon had allowed his blood satiety to fall so low. He had thought he needed a little push to get through the third wave, but in the end, he managed fine without any tricks.

But now there was a fourth wave, and he was determined to complete it for that extra reward, no matter what. This was a golden opportunity, and under no circumstances was he going to let it go to waste.

He withstood his mental exhaustion and continued fighting, pushing his mind and body, when finally his blood satiety dropped to the last 5%.

The next instant, a crazed madness overtook Damon, and his mind became filled with the thought of blood and only the thought of blood and survival.

On the other hand, his stats instantly doubled, giving him a boost of raw, monstrous strength and power. A new notification appeared in front of him.

[Ding! You have triggered: Blood Frenzy State (Passive)]

[Blood Frenzy State: When blood satiety falls below 5%, the user enters a temporary berserk state. All stats are increased by 100% for 30 seconds. In this state, skill costs are halved, damage dealt is doubled, and healing effects are tripled. However, rational thinking is impaired, and all bloodthirst-related impulses are magnified.]

Damon roared, a savage sound tearing from his throat as his vision bled crimson. The fallen in front of him, previously an overwhelming tide, now felt like mere paper targets. His claws tore through shields. His Blood Cleave became a massacre.

Every swing of his arms launched broken bodies across the battlefield, and the casters—those damned casters—barely had time to scream before he tore into them like a force of nature.

The blood shield tanks that had once seemed so troublesome? Damon slammed into one, his claws sinking past its shield and rending through flesh and bone. He didn’t stop moving, his attacks chaining one into another like an unstoppable avalanche.

All that mattered was blood.

Blood. Blood. Blood.

The fallen horde quickly shrank under his onslaught, the momentum fully reversed. And when Damon finally stood amidst a sea of mangled corpses, panting, wild-eyed, his thirst still unquenched, the corpses around him disappeared, and a new wave of enemies appeared.

A fifth wave!

Damon barely managed to kill a couple of dozen when his frenzy state finally ended, and the severe backlash followed. His health started steadily dropping.

Damon wanted to try more, but the trial immediately ended. He let out a sigh and collapsed on the ground. He had done the best he could do, and now it was time to see the results.

He could have farmed more attribute points or upgraded his gear, but the thing was, the trial would have adjusted accordingly. The test was purely about insight into a skill and thanks to his previous life experience he was able to crack it to a decent level.

Maybe some genius would have cleared more levels but Damon was satisfied with his progress. He even ended up getting a skill upgrade for free.

"Fuck it. I just need blood now, damn it." He murmured, his entire body coming down with extreme weakness. Thankfully, a blob of blood splashed on his face and Damon greedily drank it all in.

Looking at his condition, Varnyx unexpectedly laughed out loud. "You deliberately starved yourself just to trigger Blood Frenzy, didn’t you? You used the oldest trick in the book, little blood initiate."

He stopped laughing and looked at Damon seriously. "But only a few initiates would dare gamble with their lives like that. Fewer still would survive it."

"And you didn’t just survive it. You used it to clear an entire level. Only if your technique in ingrained in your very soul, you would be able to accomplish what you just did. I applaud your commitment to the skill and learning blood magic."

"However, I simply cannot allow you to proceed with the common ritual."

Damon’s eyes went wide. What the hell? Wasn’t the guy praising me all this time? He opened his mouth to speak when Varnyx stopped him.

"Come and meet me tomorrow, I will prepare a grand ritual for you!"
